Well, it could be set to a "no-desktop" dummy ebuild until a desktop is 
installed... with "no-desktop" blocking those ebuilds which depend on having 
a desktop installed. 

Just a thought. And that's assuming there are ebuilds that depend on a generic 
desktop...
