I solved that problem by adding the following line to my .xinitrc

xmodmap -e "keysym Alt_L = Meta_L Alt_L"

Under keyboard in /etc/X11/XF86Config I've:

        Option      "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"

not sure if it's relevant for your case... Just try combinations of the two but my \
guess is that the xmodmap entry is enough.
