This is a reply to two distinct questions from the previous digest.

1)
First off the problem with the mousewheel not being recognized is due
to the fact that you need to also add:
    Option "Buttons" "5"
to your XF86Config in addition to the Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5". If
you have further questions, you can take a look at my XF86Config at
http://ww2.cs.fsu.edu/~hines/ringworld_config/XF86Config which uses
this exact syntax.

2)
The second question asked about updating the Gnome menu structure
without having to restart X or Gnome each time. You can send the
gnome-panel process SIGHUP to get it to restart with the new changes
directly in X. The easiest way you can do this is by running gtop,
locating the process with name gnome-panel, right-click and then
select Send Signal -> SIGHUP. It will briefly disappear and then
reappear with your new settings.
