You shouldn't have to log out and back in when the resolution changes like 
this.  Try CTRL-ALT-+ (ctrl alt plus) and/or CTRL-ALT-- (ctrl alt minus) 
to cycle throught the screen resolutions until you're back to normal.

Glad you got Quake3 working.  May you have high frag counts!
