If you have a USB mouse, /dev/mouse is probably wrong. It is usually a symlink
to /dev/misc/psaux, which is the PS2 mouse port.

In my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, I have the following:

---SNIP---
Section "InputDevice"
        # Logitech Mouseman Dual Optical - USB
        Identifier "Mouse1"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
---SNIP---

Good Luck.
