I have had the same problem and this solution didn't work. As long as xfs
is enabled in /etc/X11/Sessions/Gnome I can't start Gnome. When I turn it
off, Gnome starts fine, but uses ugly non-AA font rendering.

I saw that someone suggested adding a reference to the font server in
XF86Config, but when I start xfs (as is suggested below) I can't find the
server port. 7100 doesn't seem to work. A "ps ax |grep xfs" shows that it
is running, but I didn't see where the port was listed (I'm a newbie, so if
it's there, I could have just not known it). On the first start, it did go
through and index fints (or said so, at least), but that didn't seem to do
any good.

I also noticed there was no XftConfig in /etc/X11, so I copied one over from
another system.

The problem /seems/ to be simply that it cannot find the font server when it
starts X. That is to say, when I start the xfs service, I get no errors, so
I assume (foolishly?) that it must be working, but X never seems to connect
to it.

Anyway, I'm not sure how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated. I
really haven't a clue where to go from here.

Yes ! it works !

I changed my XF86Config to use xfs, and started xfs service with
/etc/init.d/xfs start
I saw it generating some "fonts index" and it worked.
Then i removed xfs from the X configuration and stoped xfs,
and it's still working :-)

i didn't know fonts have to be indexed, but anyway, it works...

sylvain
