When you run an X session as, say 'joe', other local users (even root) can't 
just connect to your session, you have to give explicitly permission.

Eg. by running the command:

	xhost +localhost

(as the simple user) you enable other users at localhost to connect to your X 
session. This is normally sufficient. Now you should be able to su to root 
and do your job. Be sure the DISPLAY environment variable is set to the same 
value as in the user's X session. After the root job run

	xhost  -

to disable again others connecting to your X server from localhost.

When you use KDE, you can also use Alt+F2 (Run Command), Options-> run as 
other user (fill in root) and enter as a command:

	konsole -e /path/to/firestarter

Then KDE handles the display permission stuff.
