Subject: [gentoo-desktop] Very strange X problem (LONG)

Hello all,

After scouring the mailing lists and newsgroups, and not finding anything I
turn to the lists for help. I am fairly new to gentoo, trying it out after
falling in love with FreeBSD, but missing some of the Linux coolness (like
an nVidia driver).

My problem is this, I have a NEC MultiSync LCD 1880SX 18.1" Flat panel
connected to an nVidia GeForce MX 420. This setup worked fine under XFree86
4.2.1 in FreeBSD at 1280x1024. I am trying to get X running on gentoo, on
the exact same box and the exact same settings in the XF86Config and I get a
black screen and the monitor says OUT OF RANGE. I cannot get the range that
the monitor thinks it's getting from the monitor it self. I have tried
entering static values for both the Horizontal and Vertical scan ranges with
no avail.

The manufacturer values for the H-Range are 31.0-82kHz and V-Range 50-85Hz
with the optimal resolution at 1280x1024x60Hz (V).

I really have no idea what is going on, other than the fact that the Linux
kernel does have more support for the nVidia cards and maybe something is
going wrong inside the kernel, as FreeBSD uses the native XFree86 nv driver,
which is what I am currently using in my conf file now. I am attaching the
XF86Config and the output from XFree86 -logverbose 5. Thanks in advance for
any help.

Dave

P.S. I can still boot into beastie if comparisons are needed.
