Thanks for the pointers.
I gave Jan's/Fedora's gdb-readline-6.0.patch a try and found it to be
doing the job sufficiently well for me. For the moment, I am going to
adopt it into RTEMS gdb patches.
Jan, I would appreachiate it if your patch was "upstreamed" and
integrated into the upcoming gdb-6.9.
