Using Gauntlet 5.5 on Solaris 2.6.
Hardware: Sun 250 400MHz, 1GB ram.

The following message occurs all too frequently:

Mar 26 11:51:01 firewallname.domain smap[12564]: deny use of proxy: too many
active children (limit 70)

I would expect this to occur occasionally when someone tries to send a lot
of simultaneous messages, however, every 2-3 days this message will be
returned to every attempt to connect to the firewall on port 25, rendering
mail unusable. Stopping and starting the mail service immediately cures the
problem (for a few days). Setting the limit higher seems to make almost no
difference (it just lasts a bit longer before the same recurs). Monitoring
the active processes at this time shows only a few smap processes running -
certainly not 70. 

We currently handle about 25-30,000 messages per day spread over 2
firewalls.
