For the record (since this is posted on the Gallery users mailing list),
Jesse is running an early access version of Gallery if you're running
any release you downloaded from the download page you *don't* have
to worry about this problem.
Jesse, you put your finger on the problem, so it was fairly easy to
fix. I've resolved this problem in 1.2.6-cvs-b3. I'm sorry about your lost
photos... I hope you had backups. Thanks very much for reporting the bug
promptly -- hopefully you saved others from experienceing a similar problem.

I rolled back the changes and it appears to work properly again. Sigh, the
bleeding edge...
