I think the "drudgery" is part of what you're trying to learn.
One of the nice things about the FWTK is that it is so SMALL,
making such a review even possible.

I have analyzed it myself and tried to gain an understanding, 
but I've never tried to reduce it to a flow chart or executive summary.

I would suggest that you go ahead and plow through it, making a
flow chart if it will help you, understanding why things are done the way
they are for each routine.  The code has some comments, and usually
includes the authors' mailing address.  If you have a question, most
authors are generally as helpful as possible, within their time limitations.

Good luck with your studies.  I've also found a network monitoring tool
like TCPDUMP to be very helpful in understanding some of what's going
on, but if you think reviewing the short commented source code is 
tedious, wait until you start disassembling packets.  It's kinda like
digging for dinosaur bones sometimes.  :-)
