Do you have that on your configuration ?
The message you wrote about /var/log/message is only valid when you
start the daemon manually ?

That is always a good idea (to me) to know the exit code of a command.

In my bashrc file, I have set this:

export PS1='\[\033[01;34m\]\u@\h:\w[$?]\$ \[\033[00m\]'

When the START_DAEMON is set to no, the exit code should be 0.

I built it from scratch on my Debian Sid.
