Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Advchk is a tool for monitoring the security of installed software.
Advisory Check gathers security advisories using RSS/RDF/XML feeds,
compares them against a list of known software, and alerts you if you're
vulnerable. Since adding software lists by hand would be quite a boring
task, advchk leverages your system's package manager for detecting
software. Software installed on remote systems can be monitored by
executing the remote package manager as an SSH ForcedCommand using
Public-key authentication.

Changes: SSH-Update can now use multiple remote package managers on the
same host. Upgrading to this version requires a "advchk -R host -A host"
for each host.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Inline LaTeX mode was fixed. The legend routine was generalized
to allow multiple entries per line; an example was added. The truepoint
function was renamed framepoint. A truepoint function that works like
point but accounts for fixed-sized objects was added. The
picture.calculateTransform function now returns the actual transform used
for fitting in the case where only an approximate picture size was
available. A 2D frequency binning routine was added to the stats module. A
memory leak was fixed.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers

About: CGIProxy is a Perl CGI script that acts as an Internet proxy.
Through it, you can retrieve resources that may be inaccessible from your
own machine. The user is kept as anonymous as possible from any servers.
HTTP and FTP are supported, and optionally SSL. Common uses include
censorship circumvention, VPN-like setups, anonymous proxies, personal
proxies, and others. Options include text-only browsing (to save
bandwidth), selective cookie and script removal, simple ad filtering,
access restriction by server, encoded target URLs and cookies,
configuration by end user, and much more (currently about 50 config
options). Javascript is fully supported. An online demo is available.

Changes: "javascript:" URLs are now handled better. rot-13 encoding of
cookies now works correctly. "about:blank" pages no longer generate a
warning page. The URL field in the start page now gets focus
automatically. A few other bugfixes and workarounds are included.

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Chronojump uses a contact platform suitable for two events
(in-platform and out-platform), as well as a chronometer printed circuit
designed ad-hoc in order to obtain precise and trustworthy measurements.
The flight time of a jump is an indicator of the elevation of the center
of gravity of the jumper (as long as the starting and arrival position are
the same). Chronojump is also suitable for measuring races and rhythms.

Changes: A unique window for executing events, with a configurable graph
and progressBars, in quasi-realtime. Simulated events now are truly
simulated. Autoincremental copies of the database on each chronojump
execution. Reactive jumps can finish after time if a jumper is in the air
(deselectable). Dates are now internationally supported. Q Index and Dj
Index support in the main window. Search has been implemented on
person_recuperate. Many bugfixes and improvements in usability. Translated
to Chinese, English (GB), Finnish, French, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese

[014] - Conary 1.0.37 (1.0)
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Thu, Oct 26th 2006 08:43

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: When multiple troves with the same name are already installed,
Conary now uses path information to choose which one should be the one
that is updated. This is particularly useful for multiple foo:lib
components. Failure to call GPG to validate trove signatures is now
printed only if a signature trust threshhold has been set. The usage
message has been simplified to be more useful, and fits on one
standard-size screen. Source files can now change to and from autosource
files. A KDE mirror list has been added.

  by DarkWorld Author (http://freshmeat.net/users/dwauth/)
  Thu, Oct 26th 2006 03:00

Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy

About: DarkWorld is a space-based massively multiplayer real-time strategy
game. Each player starts off with their own home planet. From there they
can build ships, start exploring the universe, colonize other planets, and
attack other players. What makes this game unique is that the game is
always running at a very slow speed even when you are not connected. When
you send a ship to another planet, it may not arrive for hours or days,
and likewise the message it sends back may not arrive for hours or days.
This allows many players to engage in a real-time strategy game that could
last for months. New players can join the game at any time.

Changes: Visible changes on the client side include the ability to attack
other players, view events that happened while logged out, and view
real-time player scores. Many changes were made on the server side to
enable these new features. The server also supports the ability to
constantly save the game to a database, however this new feature is not
well tested.

[019] - dbackup 1.1.0 (Stable)
  by David Parrish (http://freshmeat.net/users/dparrish/)
  Thu, Oct 26th 2006 03:00

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: dbackup is a disk-based client-server backup system for Linux or
other UNIX systems. It works on the principle that disks are cheaper and
more reliable than tapes. Backups are started by cron, probably on a daily
basis, by the client. The client backs up individual filesystems or
directories with tar and sends the result to the server, which stores them
in a simple tree-based directory structure. Restores are trivial, either by
using the supplied restore client, or by simply copying the appropriate tar
files off the server and uncompressing them.

Changes: This release is a major change that breaks backward
compatibility. However it is much more extensible and quite a bit cleaner.

Utilities

About: drm_tools contains several small utilities: accudate, columnadd,
datasniffer, execinput, extract, mbin, mbout, mdump, and msgqueue.
accudate is a date replacement with subsecond accuracy. columnadd adds
integers, decimals, and/or times in columns. execinput executes commands
one at a time from stdin. extract extracts and then emits column/token
fields. datasniffer and mdump format binary data files. mbin with mbout
buffers large binary data streams to minimize wear on tape devices.
msgqueue provides command line control of message queues.

Changes: This release adds mbin and mbout buffering tools. The license has
 been changed from free but proprietary to GPL v2. The documentation has

  by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
  Thu, Oct 26th 2006 23:32

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Extended Python Debugger is a more complete debugger for Python
than the stock pdb.py debugger. It supports a "restart" command,
non-interactive POSIX-like line tracing, command options, disassembly of
instructions, and stack traces that give better information for exec
statements. Stepping/nexting skips over method/function "defs". It tries
to follow gdb's command set unless there is good reason not to.

Changes: Some small improvements were made in signal handling, thread
debugging, and documentation. There were also changes to make pydb more
compatible with ipython. The "continue" command now accepts an optional
position name.

Database
Software Development :: Libraries

About: libstldb4 is a C++ wrapper for the sleepycat db4 database. It uses
the STL in the API where sensible, allows standard IOStreams for data
access where sensible, e.g. getting the value of a key should be able to
use an istream interface to allow simple partial value retreival, and
moves the transaction parameter to be the last optional parameter or
provides two versions of the same method for trans/nontrans. The API has
been modified to use more standard types. Operator overloading is used to
allow quick and dirty coding (mydb[ "key" ] = "value";) to set and cerr.

Changes: A potential bug in ~Transaction() was fixed. Support for using a
Loki functor as the database ordering function was added.
offsetNullTerminatedSecIdxFunction() was added for secondary indexing.
Transaction::setDefaultDestructionIsAbort() was added to support the RAII
design pattern.

System :: Logging

About: Logback is intended as a successor to the popular log4j project,
and was designed by log4j's founder, Ceki Gulcu. The basic architecture is
sufficiently generic so as to apply under different circumstances. It is
divided into three modules. The Core module lays the groundwork for the
other two modules, whereas the Classic module can be assimilated to an
improved version of log4j. It natively implements the SLF4J API so that
you can readily switch back and forth between logback and other logging
systems, such as log4j or JDK14 Logging. The Access module integrates with
Servlet containers to provide HTTP access log functionality. You can easily
build your own modules on top of the Core module.

Changes: This release offers a big improvement in Joran, its configuration
framework. Joran is now able to replay configuration elements. Logback's
documentation has also been improved. A complete reference on Layouts is
available in the logback manual directory, as well as a FAQ page.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: UFRaw is a utility for converting and manipulating raw images from
digital cameras. It can be used as a stand-alone tool or as a Gimp plugin,
and images can be batch processed using the commandline interface. UFRaw
reads most existing raw formats using Dave Coffin's raw conversion utility
DCRaw, and it supports basic color management using Little CMS, allowing
the user to apply color profiles. For Nikon users, UFRaw has the advantage
that it can read the camera's tone curves. Even if you don't own a Nikon,
you can still apply a Nikon curve to your images.

Changes: The most interesting change in this release is that luminosity
curve and saturation are applied in LCH(ab) color space. Another new
feature is the ability to generate thumbnails from the preview image
embedded in many raw formats. All users will benefit from a much quicker
generation of thumbnails in the GIMP plug-in. GNOME users can also enjoy
full thumbnail support on the desktop. UFRaw now also has the
infrastructure for translations, and it has been translated into Russian
and French.

About: The Zero Install Injector makes it possible for users to install
software easily and without the need for root privileges. It takes the URL
of a program's interface description and chooses suitable versions of the
program and all of its dependencies (also identified by URLs) according to
the user's policy settings (eg. "stable", "testing", "minimal network use",
etc). The chosen versions are downloaded and cached and the program is run,
using environment variables to let it find the components.

Changes: The GUI now has a Compile button to generate a binary from a
source package. More complex version numbers are supported (e.g.
"1.2-rc3"). New --before and --not-before command line arguments can be
used to restrict the version selected easily. Cabinet archives can be
extracted. Extensive epydocs for the Python API are now available on the
Web site.
