Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

Database :: Front-Ends

About: Emma is a graphical toolkit for MySQL database developers and
administrators. It provides dialogs to create or modify MySQL databases,
tables, and associated indexes. The results of an executed query are
displayed in a resultset where the record data can be edited by the user,
if the SQL statemant allows for it. The SQL editor and resultset view are
grouped in tabs. Results can be exported to CSV files. Multiple
simultaneous opened MySQL connections are possible. Emma is the successor
of yamysqlfront.

Changes: This is a complete rewrite of yamysqlfront in Python. This
version has been in productive use for weeks now, but didn't have all the
features of yamysqlfront until now. It features multiple query tabs (each
with its own database connection and character encoding), editable query
results, query templates, the ability to export query result as an SQL
script, and a table schema editor.

  Sat, Oct 21st 2006 22:55

Text Editors

About: GNU ed is a line-oriented text editor. It is used to create,
display, modify and otherwise manipulate text files, both interactively
and via shell scripts. A restricted version of 'ed', 'red', can only edit
files in the current directory, and cannot execute shell commands. ed is
the "standard" text editor in the sense that it is the original editor
for UNIX, and thus widely available. For most purposes, however, it is
superceded by full-screen editors such as Emacs, and Vi.

Changes: The signal handling for SIGINT has been fixed. A new argument
parser that replaces "getopt_long" has been added.

Security
System :: Boot
System :: Diagnostics

About: INSERT (the Inside Security Rescue Toolkit) aims to be a
multi-functional, multi-purpose disaster recovery and network analysis
system. It boots from a credit card-sized CD-ROM and is basically a
stripped-down version of Knoppix. It features good hardware detection,
fluxbox, emelfm, links-hacked, ssh, tcpdump, nmap, chntpwd, and much more.
It provides full read-write support for NTFS partitions (using captive),
and the ClamAV virus scanner (including a fairly recent signature database
and a GUI). It also has a network boot facility.

Changes: Most of the sotware packages and the kernel (2.6.16.27) have been
updated. The latest versions of GParted, partimage, and clamav were
included. Captive-NTFS was dropped in favour of NTFS-3G, which is faster
and more reliable. Firefox 1.5.0.7 is now available via a download and
install script. An install script for the F-Prot virus scanner (for home
use) has been added. Most of the known bugs were fixed.

  Sat, Oct 21st 2006 15:10

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Libc-X provides extentions to the standard C library implementing
useful and powerful data structures and functions. Its Unix name is libcx.
It is not a template layer. It’s made entirely with the C standard
language, compatible with C++, and portable (currently Linux and Windows).
All developed structures are designed to be used in stand-alone mode with
limited dependencies with other features of Libc-X. For example, you can
easily extract the header and the .c source of Hashtable and use it
outside Libc-X.

Changes: This release implements search trees and splay trees. It adds
multivalues per key capabilities to hashtable and provides a set of 8, 16,
and 32 bit manipulation routines. A table with all prime numbers under
100,000 has been added and integrated to hashtable auto rehashing support.
Enumeration now has check's constraints capabilities.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Py++ is an object-oriented framework for creating a code generator
for the Boost.Python library.

Changes: This version introduces quite few improvements. Performance was
improved. A fully automatic algorithm for exposing C++ get/set functions
as Python properties was devised. Previously generated source files that
are no longer in use are now handled. A convenience API was added for
translating user-defined exceptions to Python exceptions. Understanding of
call policies was improved, so default_call_policies should not be
generated any more, and return_value_policy< return_opaque_pointer > will
cause Py++ to create a specialization for the type_id function, as
required by the library.

feeds. It has some other functions built-in like text, HTML, or property
file output, or templates with custom tags to insert RSS feeds into pages
that could be uploaded to a server that supports only static HTML.

Changes: A small fix was made for handling some malformed RSS feeds.

[032] - Zip extension for PHP 1.7.5
  by Pierre (http://freshmeat.net/users/pierrej/)
  Sat, Oct 21st 2006 22:39

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The Zip extension for PHP aims to provide a convenient and powerful
set of functionality to work with zip archives. It can read, write, and
create zip archives. It also supports stream access to any archive entry.
It is 100% compatible with the old versions of the extension (which were
read-only).

Changes: A wrong entry name like "a/b//file.txt" cannot be extracted on
Windows. A "bug" in PHP mkdir was the cause, but a work-around has been
introduced for PHP versions before 5.2.0, and later version of PHP will
contain this fix.
