Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[001] - ACE 5.5.3 (Development)
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Wed, Oct 11th 2006 04:38

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that helps you develop and deploy high-performance
networked applications faster and with less code to write and maintain.
ACE is especially useful for systems that use network and/or inter-process
communications and that take advantage of multithreading. While the ACE
source code is free, that's not the only way you save money with ACE.
ACE's wrappers and higher-level patterns help you develop your software
quickly and portably, helping you to complete your projects on time and
within budget.

Changes: Accelerated SPARC assembler versions of some atomic operations
have been added. Substring searches in large strings were fixed. Support
was added for Intel C++ 9.1 on Windows and Linux. VxWorks 6.3 support was
added. Preliminary support for Mac OS X 10.4 on Intel CPUs was added.
COIOP was added as a pluggable protocol. ACE_Hash_MultiMap_Manager and
ACE_Message_Queue_Ex_N classes were added. Many bugfixes, code cleanups,
and code speedups were done.

[002] - Acquire Board Game 0.4
  by kernco (http://freshmeat.net/users/kernco/)
  Wed, Oct 11th 2006 00:47

Games/Entertainment

About: Acquire is a computer version of the classic board game. The goal
of the game is to make the most profit by buying stocks in companies that
form, grow, and merge as tiles are placed on the game board. This program
is a text-based version of the game and should be playable on any system
with a C++ compiler.

Changes: The main improvement of this release is that the bug causing the
game to crash at the end was fixed, so you can now see who won. There were
some other small bugfixes and changes.

[004] - Advanced Bash Scripting Guide 4.1 (Stable)
  by M. Leo Cooper (http://freshmeat.net/users/thegrendel/)
  Wed, Oct 11th 2006 13:26

Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
about 700 print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains over 300 profusely commented illustrative examples, and a number
of tables. Not just a shell scripting tutorial, this book also provides an
introduction to basic programming techniques, such as sorting and
recursion. It is well suited for either individual study or classroom use.
It covers Bash version 3+.

Changes: This is a bugfix and clarification update. The "Subshells"
chapter has been updated (much-need clarification). Some new material
added: a couple of small example scripts and some definitions. A couple of
exercises have been added in the "Exercises Appendix." There are some
bugfixes.

[005] - AfterStep 2.2.3 (Stable)
  by Vaevictus (http://freshmeat.net/users/vaevictus/)
  Wed, Oct 11th 2006 13:27

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: AfterStep is a Window Manager for X which started by emulating the
NeXTSTEP look and feel, but which has been significantly altered according
to the requests of various users. Many adepts will tell you that NeXTSTEP
is not only the most visually pleasant interface, but also one of the most
functional and intuitive out there. AfterStep aims to incorporate the
advantages of the NeXTSTEP interface, and add additional useful features.

Changes: This release includes many bugfixes, enhancements, and new
features, as well as huge modifications to ASXML parsing. GTK
colorscheming is now disabled by default. Support is now implemented for
parsing module options from look and feel; only WinList does this for now.
Major menu contents cleanup.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Address Book
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)

About: Brutus is an Exchange connector and development framework that
offers access to all of MAPI and therefore to all versions of Microsoft
Exchange from version 5.5 onwards. It is a complete wrapping of all of
MAPI into a (large) set of CORBA interfaces. It enables any groupware
client to integrate seamlessly into any organization with large Exchange
deployments on an equal footing with MS Outlook. Being based on CORBA, it
is platform independent, and works equally well on Linux, the BSDs,
Windows, or wherever there is a CORBA implementation available.

Changes: This release is solely dedicated to a new recurrence API on top
of IMessage. The are no functional changes in the Evolution plugin. The
way Outlook stores and manipulates recurrence information for events and
tasks is a mess. The task was therefore to design an API that would allow
a client developer to create and manipulate recurrent events and tasks as
well as exceptions to the recurrence pattern for individual occurrences.
Please see the comments in IMessage.idl and types.idl on how to use the
Brutus recurrence API.

  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Wed, Oct 11th 2006 08:21

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: eXcavator is an XML query processing class for PHP. Queries are
constructed using a small query language, and query results are returned
as either loosely formed or strict XML, in formats suitable for both text
and HTML. One of eXcavator's most useful features is its facility to
insert query results into user-defined templates, which allow for a free
interpolation of user text and the data extracted by the query. It runs on
top of XML_PullParser, but uses a completely independent API. However, it
does offer opportunities to use the facilities of both packages side by
side for programmers familiar with both.

Changes: This version of eXcavator adds namespace support to its query
engine. It builds upon the namespace support in XML_PullParser
1.3.0/1.3.1.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: PHP Printer Friendly Pages Generator Class is a PHP class that
helps you create printer-friendly versions of your page very easily. All
you need to do is to insert some custom tags in your pages, which will
tell the script what needs to be printed from that specific page. An
unlimited number of areas can be set for printing, allowing you a flexible
way of setting up the content to be printed. The output is template driven.

  by Dan (http://freshmeat.net/users/etihwnad/)
  Wed, Oct 11th 2006 11:24

Scientific/Engineering :: Electronic Design Automation (EDA)
Software Development :: Pre-processors

About: Pyspice is an easily extendable SPICE pre-processor written in
Python to reduce simulation times with little loss in accuracy. It was
inspired by John Sheahan's spicepp and developed as a modular and
extensible method of pre-processing netlists. Primarily, it has been used
to reduce netlists from the output of layout extraction tools. It combines
parallel MOSFETs and capacitors, and optionally drops small capacitors.
Planned improvements include a hierarchical namespace (e.g. .subckt/.ends
and .alter blocks), more devices, and .include/.model support. Unlike
other pre-processors, comments and blank lines are preserved in their
relative positions. This keeps the output netlist readable for subsequent
editing or processing.

Changes: This release includes least default (pass through) handling of
all element types. The structure of classes (in LEO) has changed: there
are base classes that contain common attributes, and element classes that
define the specific behavior. This version should work with any netlist
and only touch M's and C's. Work is ongoing on the class structure.
