Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Advchk (Advisory Check) reads security advisories so you don't have
to. It gathers security advisories using RSS feeds, compares them to a list
of known software, and alerts you if you're vulnerable. Since adding
software lists by hand would be quite a boring task, it leverages your
systems package manager for detecting software. Using it can be as simple
as "advchk -F myhost.list". Quite a few CERTs and Vendors also offer
security-relevant RSS feeds, and some usenet gateways like Google Groups
offer RSS subscriptions.

Changes: Support for AIX lslpp and Solaris pkginfo package managers was
added.

Software Development :: Refactoring

About: AntiCutAndPaste is designed to search for text fragments that have
been copied and pasted in programming language source code or plain text.
It has been tested on sources from large C++, Pascal, Java, and C# (Mono)
projects. The algorithms used are very fast and can handle up to three
million C++ code lines in one minute. Minor modifications of code are
ignored during the search. Reports are sorted conveniently by the total
size of all similar fragments and there are many report customization
options.

About: eispice is a ground-up re-write of the Berkley Spice 3 Simulation
engine, containing a small subset of device models and commands that are
targeted towards PCB level Signal Integrity Simulation (ibis models,
t-lines, termination, etc.). It should run faster than Berkley Spice 3 for
most SI simulations, and will eventually include direct ibis model import.
It runs in batch-mode only (i.e. no nutmeg) and doesn't include a plot
utility.

Changes: Options control was added for a handful of Spice3 options. A
piece-wise cubic-spline extension of the PWL model was added. A utility
(eiibis) to convert ibis models into libraries usable by eispice was
added, though it's still in the experimental stages. There were also
several bugfixes, and a new mailing list was added to the project page.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: GRIA is Grid middleware that enables use of the Grid in a secure,
interoperable and flexible manner. It makes use of business models,
processes, and semantics to allow resource owners and users to discover
each other and negotiate terms for access to high-value resources. It
implements an overall business process to find, procure and utilise
resources capable of carrying out high-value, expert-assisted
computations. By focusing on business processes and the associated
semantics, it enables users to provision for their computational needs
more cost effectively, and develop new business models for some of their
services. Services from different providers can be combined together to
create applications using a simple and easy-to-use API.

Changes: This service puts OGSA-DAI WS-I 2.2 into the GRIA framework. It
features easy deployment via a WAR file, easy configuration with a
Web-based configuration and management interface, GRIA's standard security
features, including dynamic security policies, and transport level
encryption, message level security, and OGSA-DAI session security, which
ensures that a user's session cannot be hijacked. Linking this service to
the GRIA service provider management package also allows monitoring of
databases, access control to databases by way of SLAs, and billing for
database access.

About: iKog is a very simple utility designed to make the management of
your to-do lists quick and easy. The emphasis is on speed and portability.
The program is a text-only utility with no graphical user interface, but it
does include some features specifically designed to help with techniques
such as Getting Things Done (GTD). It also supports encryption for private
data.

Changes: This release adds a two-minute timer that may help if you are
using GTD and an @Meeting context. Tasks with overdue dates have always
been placed at the top of the list. Now, tasks with dates and an @Meeting
context are placed above other overdue tasks. This is because the @Meeting
context means that the task absolutely must be done on the date of the
meeting.

games can be run as both applications and applets, and can be scaled to
any resolution or run full-screen.

Changes: A new game was added. An API change was made: methods ending with
"BGTile" were renamed to end with "Tile" since these methods are used very
often. Animation update was moved to moveObjects. A number of bugfixes
were made: an object end-of-frame update bug, a rounding bug in tile
collision, and bugs in dbgSetBoundingBox, setBGImage, getTopLeftTile, and
sleep/pause mode.

[029] - nedmalloc 1.04 alpha
  by Niall Douglas (http://freshmeat.net/users/ned14/)
  Sat, Oct 7th 2006 22:28

Software Development

About: nedmalloc is an alternative malloc implementation for multiple
threads without lock contention based on dlmalloc 2.8.3. It is more or
less a newer implementation of ptmalloc2, the standard allocator in Linux
(which is based on dlmalloc 2.7.0) but also contains a per-thread cache
for maximum CPU scalability.

Changes: This is an interim release from SVN as there have been many
critical bugs fixed as nedmalloc was deployed on very high end
architectures. Further speed ups and scalability improvements also made.
However, this release is marked "alpha" since the usual thorough release
testing has not been performed.

  Sat, Oct 7th 2006 21:35

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: The Mana World (TMW) is a serious effort to create an innovative
free and open source MMORPG. It uses 2D graphics and aims to create a
large and diverse interactive world. The game aims to be a unique place
for people to interact not only by fighting each other but to play life,
form a community within the community, or just simply chat. Although the
game is never-ending and a linear story cannot be applied, it should have
enough background to describe and predefine tribes, kingdoms, and the
environment overall. Fullfilled quests should lead to certain events
depending on them being solved. Quests should also encourage teamwork.

Changes: This release brings new maps and monsters, more visible
equipment, and map overlay effects. Smooth scrolling was added for those
who did not like the static camera, and the joystick can now be turned
off. Numerous things were fixed, including the FPS limiter and memory
usage in OpenGL mode.

  Sat, Oct 7th 2006 22:16

Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities

About: The Unicode Description Utilities is a set of four programs for
finding out what is in a Unicode file. uniname defaults to printing the
character offset of each character, its byte offset, its hex code value,
its encoding, the glyph itself, and its name. Command line options allow
undesired information to be suppressed and the Unicode range to be added.
unidesc reports the character ranges to which different portions of the
text belong. unihist generates a histogram of the characters in its input.
ExplicateUTF8 is intended for debugging or for learning about Unicode. It
determines and explains the validity of a sequence of bytes as a UTF-8

[046] - xcb-proto 1.0 RC2
  by Josh Triplett (http://freshmeat.net/users/JoshTriplett/)
  Sat, Oct 7th 2006 22:42

Software Development :: Code Generators
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT

About: xcb-proto contains descriptions of the X Window System core
protocol and selected extensions in an XML-based data format. They are
used by the X C Binding (XCB) library to generate much of its code, but
you can also use these descriptions for other purposes, such as decoding
the X protocol or building X Window System bindings for other languages.

Changes: <import>xproto</import> was explicitly added to extensions that
use xproto. "union" was changed to "xidunion" for XID unions like DRAWABLE
and FONTABLE, so that the code generator can more easily declare these XID
unions as integer typedefs rather than unions. Structures attempting to
provide C type safety were replaced with CARD32 typedefs. render.xml now
describes CompositeGlyphs* as taking lists of BYTE, rather than lists of
unions of structures of lists. The caller must construct an appropriate
sequence of glyph elements. XCB didn't properly handle the previous
definition.

[047] - XML_PullParser 1.3.0
  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Sat, Oct 7th 2006 21:53

Text Processing :: Markup
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XML_PullParser moves the API of the PHP XML facility from an
event-based model to a token-based model. Instead of processing data as it
is passed from the parser to callbacks, a script using PullParser requests
"tokens" from XML_PullParser_getToken() and a number of helper functions.
Tokens are arrays representing XML structures, which become available in
the order in which they appear in the document being parsed. Methods are
provided both to get tokens and to extract their data.

Changes: This release incorporates Namespace support directly into the
XML_PullParser module itself, replacing the subclasses XML_PullParser_NS
and XML_PullParser_NS_doc which previously provided Namespace support.
Functionality has also been added to the Namespace facility with
enhancements to several methods and the addition a new one. This release
is designed to be backward compatible with all earlier code.
