System :: Shells

About: Apparix enables fast file system navigation by bookmarking
directories and later jumping to them using the mark. The contributed bash
completion code allows one to complete on bookmarks and on subdirectories
of the target directory.

Changes: A bug in squashing marks was fixed. A short message is now
displayed when a new bookmark duplicates an existing bookmark. Two options
for listing bookmarks were added. Administrative options no longer suffer
from undocumented interactions between regular bookmarks and portals, as
portals have largely been detached from those interfaces. A simple
undo/delete mechanism was added. The code was streamlined and the
documentation extended.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Flowchart routines were added. All paper sizes work with
"-outformat pdf" again. An asycolors.sty package was added to make LaTeX
aware of predefined Asymptote colors. The default PDF viewer for MacOS is
now "open". Optional margin arguments were added to Fill. A reverse video
option was added to slide.asy; titlepage and title call newslide by
default, unless the currentpicture is empty. An argument was added to
newslide to allow stepping to be turned off for that slide. The slidedemo
example generates any required EPS files. A segmentation fault in eval was
fixed.

  by Moinak (http://freshmeat.net/users/moinakg/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 06:07

System :: Operating System

About: BeleniX is a new live CD distribution based on the version of
OpenSolaris that runs on x86 machines. It includes all of the OpenSolaris
components (core kernel, libraries, and utilities) and also includes
additional GNU/OSS software. BeleniX will ultimately become a full
OpenSolaris and GNU/OpenSolaris distribution.

Changes: The JDK 1.5 Installable Bundle is now included on the CD along
with installer changes to provide the option to install the JDK and a
required patch. In addition, a setup_jdk script is also provided. Several
installer bugs were fixed. The 7zip tools were used to achieve a better
compression ratio. Compatibility was improved for the ported FreeBSD Math
library.

  Tue, May 23rd 2006 14:45

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: BFilter is a smart filtering HTTP proxy. Its primary purpose is
removing banner ads. Unlike the majority of similar tools, it doesn't rely
on a list of blocked URLs, but instead parses HTML on the fly, and detects
ads using a set of heuristic rules. BFilter has a built-in Javascript
engine that detects js-generated ads.

Changes: Several problems with the GTK GUI were fixed. Ads generated using
 innerHTML are now detected. An infinite loop on platforms where char is
unsigned by default has been fixed.

Information Management

About: Bugzero is a Web-based bug tracking, defect tracking, issue
tracking, and change management system used in a distributed team
environment to track software bugs, hardware defects, test cases, or any
other issues. It can also be used equally well as a helpdesk customer
support, trouble ticketing, or email management system to collect and
manage customer feedbacks, incidents, requests, and issues. It is easy to
use, but still flexible and adaptive, and can be configured to fit to your
organization's unique business process and workflow.

Changes: The "Forgot password" email is now template-based for easy
customization, and related text messages have been moved into a properties
file. JavaMail has been updated to javamail-1.3.3 and jaf-1.0.2. Email is
now saved as an attachment un-parsed in the case of a Java IOException. A
caching issue involved with launching two browser windows for different
projects was fixed.

[007] - Contact Conductance Estimator 0.2 beta
  by ido50 (http://freshmeat.net/users/ido50/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 23:40

Scientific/Engineering

About: Contact Conductance Estimator (CoCoE) is a program that estimates
the conductance (or resistance) between two surfaces in contact. It is
meant to be used by designers and analysts of physical systems where heat
transfer by means of contact is of importance. CoCoE is written in Perl,
and uses a self-contained SQLite database and Tk for the user interface.

Changes: The ability to select unit systems was added, where appropriate.
Units were added to the final result window. The "Go Back" button now
works. "Go Back" has been replaced with "Exit" on the first window
(Material A). A "Start Over" button was added to the final result window.
A wrong resistance function for Stainless on the database was fixed. Some
entries were added to the database. Required DLL files were added to the
Win32 release, so now it works.

[012] - Decimail Webmail 3 3 alpha 1
  by Phil Endecott (http://freshmeat.net/users/endecotp/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 07:05

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Decimail Webmail 3 is an email application written in Javascript.
It is almost entirely client-side, and so has the potential for a rich and
responsive user-interface. The server-side requirement is a Web server, a
simple IMAP-to-HTTP proxy, and any IMAP server; this should result in
lower server load than some CGI Webmail applications. The code is
currently very new and only suitable for experimental use; contributions
and suggestions are welcome.

Changes: This version is entirely new code, unrelated to the previous
versions. This release is a proof-of-concept that demonstrates the
possibility of entirely client-side Web mail with a minimal IMAP-to-HTTP
proxy on the server. Many important features, such as composing mail, are
currently missing.

Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: elemenope is an Enterprise Application Integration, Service
Oriented Architecture, and general messaging framework. It provides the
capability for massive decoupling of an enterprise's components through
standardized interfaces for communications. It provides complete
abstraction of both transmission protocol and functional components. A
project may connect components via a particular protocol standard, and
completely change the protocol technology deployed with a simple change to
a configuration file, i.e. no code changes. It implements the following
connector sets: JMS, SOAP, XML-RPC, direct call, and native IBM MQSeries.
It allows an organization to easily create a large scale multi-platform
application to conduct messaging or transaction processing. It simplifies
architecture of large systems by standardizing functional components and
message pathways.

Changes: Minor bugfixes were made for the new Spring Framework
configuration implementation.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Scientific/Engineering

About: JGraph is a free, mature, and robust Java Graphing framework that
fully complies with Swing design principles. It contains all the graph
visualization and interaction functionality you might expect in a graph
library, including multiple views, layering, zoom, drag and drop, undo,
automatic expanding and collapsing, routing, and layouts. You can create
stunning workflow editors, call graphs, CAD tools, network diagrams,
database visualization tools, and more. It can also be deployed on the
server-side with a large range of image exporting functionality. It is
fully documented and commercially supported.

Changes: XOR painting on Apple JVMs is very costly in terms of memory, and
the JVM tends to not dispose of graphics objects effectively, unlike the
other main JVMs. This release adds manual dispose() calls to assist the
Apple JVM in this regard. XOR memory usage is still high on this platform,
but garbage collection after XOR painting now reclaims the memory
correctly.

  Tue, May 23rd 2006 06:04

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: New features include the ability to cache a derived EA into an
RDF store, the ability to put xsltfs arguments in the URL scheme prefix,
the ability to customize the file postfix for xsltfs output, the ability
to implicitly mount XML from an obby buffer, and the libferris-tree-as-xml
EA on mounted XML. ferris-filesystem-to-xsltfs-sheets can now set up a FUSE
mountpoint and mount script. Improvements were made to the thin filesystem
DOM wrapper. Selecting the default location and storage for myrdf was
cleaned up. Overmount attempts are no longer made for the

[050] - PowerDNS Recursor 3.1
  by ahu (http://freshmeat.net/users/ahu2/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 10:59

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: With a small codebase, the PowerDNS Recursor is an advanced
recursor currently serving the DNS resolving needs of over 2 million
Internet connections. Besides high performance (using kqueue or epoll,
over 15 thousand qps on commodity hardware), it provides advanced
anti-spoofing measures. In addition, the program caches server performance
and timeouts, making it both network and user friendly. It also has
built-in hooks for making graphs with rrdtool, providing insight into
nameserver performance.

Changes: This release adds the ability to serve authoritative data to
users, using a simple configuration. The contents of /etc/hosts can be
published over DNS, which should allow many installations to do without
zones at all. Full use is now made of any published IPv6 nameserver
addresses. Other improvements have raised the cache hit rate and sped up
Active Directory queries. RFC compliance was improved.

  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 01:59

About: Quick-Join implements a heuristic for speeding up neighbour
joining, making neighbour joining feasible for large sets of taxa. The
inferred tree is identical to the tree inferred by the traditional
neighbour joining method, but the heuristic will (potentially) construct
the  tree significantly faster.

[059] - SMS Server Tools 2.1
  by Stefan Frings (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfrings/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 23:42

Communications

About: The SMS Server Tools (smstools) were made to send and receive SMS
from one or many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some
sample scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL
database. The daemon waits for files in an outgoing spool directory and
sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification. This
software support text messages in 7 and 16 bits (UCS2), as well as 8 bit
binary messages.

Changes: Raw support of UDH in text messages was added. In binary
messages, the UDH flag was not detected properly. This has been fixed.

[062] - Tablix 0.3.2
  by Tomaz Solc (http://freshmeat.net/users/Avian/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 14:35

Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: Tablix is a powerful free software kernel for solving general
timetabling problems. It uses a coarse-grained parallel genetic algorithm
in combination with other techniques to construct sensible timetables from
XML formatted problem descriptions. Tablix can run on a single host as well
as on a heterogeneous parallel virtual machine using PVM3. The default
installation will export finished timetables into XHTML 1.1 format ready
for publishing on the Internet, or into a "comma separated values" format
(CSV) that is suitable for import into a spreadsheet application and
further processing. The kernel supports a very wide range of timetabling
problems, from high school timetabling to barge scheduling. Several
timetable constraints are already implemented in the default installation.
Because of the kernel's modular design, it is easy to add custom timetable
constraints and/or modify existing ones.

Changes: Several bugs were fixed in the kernel and fitness modules. The
kernel API for updater functions has been changed due to a design error.
A new XHTML export module with better support for large timetables has
been added. Support for multi-week timetables has been enhanced. Compile
errors on the AMD-64 architecture have been fixed.

About: textTHaCAA is a system for Telling Humans and Computers Apart
Automatically that was inspired by CAPTCHA from Carnegie Mellon. Unlike
image-based problems which can be difficult for people with certain
disabilities, it is designed to be accessible to all users. It achieves
this by asking simple randomly generated text-based multiple choice
questions where the user has to select the members of one group from a
list randomly selected from members of a series of different groups.

Changes: This release includes improved seeding of the random number
generators and increases the accessibility of the system. It now passes
the full range of accessibility checks that are performed by the WAVE 3.0
Accessibility Tool. This release fixes session handling issues, and there
are various other minor optimisations and improvements.

[069] - WordGenerator 1.3
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Tue, May 23rd 2006 01:57

Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: WordGenerator generates hypothetical words from specifications of
their syllable structure. The user specifies the maximum length of the
words in syllables, the abstract structure of syllables in the language
(in terms of such units as consonants and vowels or onsets and rhymes),
and the actual sounds that comprise each abstract class (e.g. the list of
vowels in the language); WordGenerator then generates the words that
conform to this specification. Such lists are useful to field linguists
exploring the vocabulary of a language, and to designers of artificial
languages.

Changes: The user is now prompted if they attempt to exit without saving
the generated words. The help menu buttons that bring up popups are now
toggles. A partial Spanish translation was included.

  Tue, May 23rd 2006 07:06

Information Management
Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: wxRemind is a wxPython-based front-end for Remind, a powerful
calendar and alarm application. Similar to the curses-based Wyrd, the
display features a calendar and daily event list suitable for visualizing
your schedule at a glance. Dates and associated events can be quickly
selected either with the mouse or cursor keys, and dates in the calendar
are color coded to reflect the total duration of scheduled events.
wxRemind integrates with an external editor of your choice to make editing
of reminder files more efficient, provides hotkeys to quickly access the
most common Remind options, and allows popup, sound, and/or spoken alarms.

Changes: Significant cosmetic improvements were made. The listctrl header
and statusbar were replaced with textcrtls to solve background color
problems and to allow the selected date to be centered. The event list now
uses three columns instead of one to allow the use of non-monospaced fonts.
A configuration option was added for selecting font sizes and for selecting
background colors either by "family" or individually.
