[001] - Asymptote 1.05
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Shaded and skeletal representations of surfaces of rotation were
implemented. General determinants were added. Sin, Cos, Tan, aSin, aCos,
and aTan, which use degrees, are built-in functions. The dash adjustment
algorithm was improved. The cubicroots solver works again when R=0.
Automatic viewing can easily be disabled under MSDOS. Nonstandard paper
sizes are correctly handled. The C locale is always used when producing
postscript patterns. Stepping of slide presentations can be enabled from
the command line.

Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers

About: AXIGEN is a fast, reliable and secure mail server with an open
architecture. It is designed for easy management and allows full control
of the email traffic from a central Web/CLI admin module. AXIGEN provides
ESMTP, IMAP, and POP3 services and has been tested with standard mail
clients. A special Webmail module enables email access and delivery from
Web browsers. During the evaluation period, users are provided with full
technical support.

Changes: This release adds mail filtering, acceptance of only clean
messages sent in HTML format, clear and consistent declaration of the name
and IP address of the mail server, easy and flexible mail service
configuration (even at the user level), and automated, secure migration.

About: Balsa is an asynchronous circuit simulation and synthesis system.
Balsa is built around the Handshake Circuits methology, and it can
generate gate level netlists from high-level descriptions in the Balsa
language. Both dual-rail (QDI) and single-rail (bundled data) circuits can
be generated.

Changes: This release adds several changes aimed at achieving substantial
performance improvements by the introduction of new handshake components.
A number of experimental features have been made visible to the general
user, and there have been a number of minor bugfixes and other
improvements.

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Testing

About: BasicQuery is a Java-based application used to access databases
through JDBC. It features a Swing-based GUI and includes capabilities
useful to developers when testing SQL statements against a database. It
also produces timing information, which is valuable during tuning
exercises.

Changes: This begins the next cycle of feature additions scheduled for the
01.04 version. The configuration files have been moved to a sub-directory
of the user's home. This will prevent overwriting of configuration files
when future versions are installed. The user may now control the font type
and size for the messages and data displays. Driver definitions and connect
string templates for several DBs have been added to the default driver and
connect files. Included are Apache Derby, Informix, and DB2.

[019] - Genomorama: Genome Visualization 1.4
  by Jason Gans (http://freshmeat.net/users/jgans/)
  Fri, May 19th 2006 02:16

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Genomorama is a software program for interactively displaying
multiple genomes. It provides a powerful yet easy to use interface that
leverages the visualization power of modern computers (via OpenGL) and the
substantial bioinformatic infrastructure provided by the NCBI (via the NCBI
C toolkit). Genomorama is written in portable, highly optimized C++ and
comes in three "flavors" that allow it to run natively on (most) modern
operating systems: OS X (using Carbon), Microsoft Windows (using MFC), and
Linux (using Motif). Executables and source code are freely provided for
all flavors.

Changes: An annotation editor was added. Annotations are imported from any
genome file that contains annotation (i.e. asn, gbk, embl, ptt). Sequences
and annotations are exported to Fasta, GBK, or PTT files. A selection
guide was added for picking a nucleotide sequence to display and translate
into amino acids. Scroll bars were added for scrolling and zooming.

  Fri, May 19th 2006 02:37

Multimedia :: Graphics
Printing
System :: Hardware

About: Gimp-Print is a collection of very high quality printer drivers for
UNIX/Linux. The goal of this project is uncompromising print quality and
robustness. Included with this package is the Print plugin for the GIMP
(hence the name), a CUPS driver, and two drivers (traditional and
IJS-based) for Ghostscript that may be compiled into that package. This
driver package is Foomatic-compatible and provides Foomatic data to enable
plug and play with many print spoolers. In addition, various printer
maintenance utilities are included. Many users report that the quality of
Gimp-Print on high end Epson Stylus printers matches or exceeds the
quality of the drivers supplied for Windows and Macintosh.

Changes: This release features major fixes and enhancements based on
beta/rc feedback. All supported printers are supported explicitly, without
the need for a compatibility list. The CUPS and Foomatic/IJS drivers now
produce correctly dimensioned and proportioned output. Many crash problems
have been fixed. A major performance problem with some Epson printers has
been fixed. Color quality for many Epson printers has been improved.
Escputil is more robust. A universal Mac OS X binary has been added.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The HTTP extension for PHP aims to provide a convenient and
powerful set of functionality for one of PHP's major applications. It
eases handling of HTTP URLs, dates, redirects, headers, and messages,
provides means for negotiation of clients' preferred language and charset,
as well as a convenient way to send any arbitrary data with caching and
resuming capabilities. It provides powerful request functionality if built
with CURL support. Parallel requests are available for PHP 5 and greater.

Changes: An http_parse_params() function has been added. An
HTTP_URL_STRIP_ALL constant has been added. A possible crash in
progress/onfinish request callbacks has been fixed. http_redirect() and
http_build_url() without arguments have been fixed. The behaviour of
http_build_url() when the second parameter is NULL has been fixed.
Recursive query string merging in http_build_url() with
HTTP_URL_JOIN_QUERY has been enabled.

Adaptive Technologies
Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: IkeWiki is a new kind of Wiki (a so-called "Semantic Wiki")
developed by Salzburg Research that allows users to collaboratively
annotate pages and links between pages with semantic annotations. Such
annotations are useful because they give machines a certain amount of
"understanding" of the content that goes beyond merely displaying the
page. This information can then, for example, be used for context-specific
presentation of pages, advanced querying, consistency verification, or
drawing conclusions. It currently only works properly with Mozilla Firefox
and Opera (partly).

Changes: Major bugfixes, increased robustness, upgraded to Jena 2.4, and
switched to Apache Lucene for searching.

About: Ion is a tiling (no overlapping windows) window manager that also
has PWM-style tabbed frames which can contain multiple client windows.
These features help to keep windows organized and to switch quickly
between them. Ion was designed primarily as an efficient and unobtrusive
window manager for users who prefer the keyboard.

Changes: Lua 5.1 is now required, and transients are framed by default.

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: jBixbe lets you debug Java applications on the conceptual level of
the Unified Modeling Language (UML) at which they are designed and makes
it possible to find not only simple bugs but also weaknesses and
inefficiencies in application design. It shows the big picture of your
application so you can recognize classes and objects, and their
relationships and interaction. Different view levels support top-down
debugging and simplify debugging of multi-threaded applications. Source
code debugging has been fully integrated into the object-oriented
visualization.

About: Midirecord is a simple command-line application to record a MIDI
file with your MIDI keyboard. It also features automatic recording to a
MIDI file when you play electric piano, and thus it may be used as a
"recording daemon".

Changes: The code of this version has been completely rewritten. This
version records all MIDI events coming from MIDI keyboards, not just
note-ons. It uses the system timer to obtain timing, which makes it more
accurate and removes the dependence on MIDI clock events from the
keyboard. This version doesn't require ALSA libraries.

  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Fri, May 19th 2006 02:48

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities

About: Msort sorts files in sophisticated ways. Records may be fixed size,
newline-separated blocks, or terminated by any specified character. Key
fields may be selected by position, tag, or character range. For each key,
distinct exclusions, multigraphs, substitutions, and a sort order may be
defined or locale collation rules used. Comparisons may be lexicographic,
numeric, numeric string, hybrid, random, by string length, angle, date,
time, month name, or ISO8601 timestamp. Keys may be reversed so as to
generate reverse dictionaries. Optional keys are supported. Unicode is
supported, including full case-folding. Msort itself has a somewhat
complex command line interface, but may be driven by an optional GUI.

Changes: Hybrid comparison using locale collation rules for the textual
portions has been completely revamped and appears to be bug free. The
option of checking whether the input is sorted was added. Conversion of
stylistic variants to their plain equivalents now includes superscripts,
subscripts, and the Hebrew presentation forms. A bug in the conversion of
stylistic variants has been fixed and a small memory leak was eliminated.
Explanatory popups were added to msg for conversion of stylistic variants
and enclosed forms and stripping of diacritics.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
Software Development :: Testing
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Remote Python Call (RPyC) is a Python library for distributed
computing and RPC. It gives you control of a slave Python interpreter
(local or remote), which works on your behalf (either synchronously or
asynchronously). Unlike other RPCs, it is transparent, which means you
work with remote objects as you would work with local ones. Moreover, it
is symmetrical, so you can use callbacks, etc.

Changes: This release adds DeliveringNamespace, LoginError (instead of
tlslite's internal errors), __version__, deliver (the counterpart of
obtain, which can now deliver and obtain functions as well), and isproxy
(to test whether an object is a proxy). It improves memory consumption
with __slots__ and the isinstance/issubclass mechanism.

Database :: Front-Ends
Internet
Internet :: Log Analysis

About: Stager is a system for aggregating and presenting network
statistics. Though tailored for using NetFlow data from the flow-tools
package, it is generic and can be customized to present and process any
kind of network statistics. The backend collects data with flow-tools
and stores reports in a database, automatically handling the aggregation
of hourly statistics into days, weeks, and months. The Web frontend
presents data in tables, matrices, or plots. The reports are fully
customizable, and their definitions are stored in the database.

Changes: This release fixes several bugs in both the frontend and backend.
The most important fix is that bookmarks with relative times are now
working properly. This means that if you create a report that shows data,
for example, for the last hour with available data, you can now create a
bookmark that will always show data for the last hour with available data.

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: Webalizer Xtended is an extension of Webalizer, which adds
additional monthly statistics for all "404 Not Found" errors found in your
server log-file, including the number of the "404 Not Found" requests and
the corresponding 404 URLs. It also fixes truncated user agent strings in
the "User Agents" statistics, so user agent fields can now be grouped more
precisely. It is helpful for detecting and correcting broken links or
invasion attempts.

Changes: A segfault if there were more than 500 HTTP 404 errors in
webalizer.current has been fixed. The size of several constants has been
increased.

Unix geek who wants something minimalistic. It can keep track of things you
need to do on particular dates. It's a very short and simple program, so
you can easily tinker with it yourself. It doesn't depend on any
libraries, so it's easy to install. You should be able to install it on
any system where Perl is available, even if you don't have privileges for
installing libraries. Its file format is a simple text file, which you can
edit in your favorite editor.

Changes: The --ampm option now works as documented. A bug in the
calculation of leap years has been fixed.

[062] - window manager improved 2 3
  by bogon (http://freshmeat.net/users/gneis/)
  Fri, May 19th 2006 13:03

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: wmii is the next generation of wmi. It is a highly customizable
keyboard-and-mouse-driven X11 window manager that supports conventional,
tabbed, and tiled window management with low memory usage and vi-like user
interaction. Due to a complete rewrite, it is highly modularized and uses a
new configuration and inter-process communication interface, which is
oriented on the 9p protocol of the Plan9 operating system.

Changes: The new window management consists of a column layout. The
classic workspace (page) paradigm of previous versions or other window
managers has been replaced with a new tagging approach. The new virtual
filesystem can be accessed using a 9P-compliant client. The dependency on
Plan 9 (9base) tools has been dropped. The separation of wmiibar,
wmiikeys, and the wmiifs file-service multiplexer into separate processes
in earlier versions has been removed, which increased the overall
performance drastically and reduced a lot of code overhead.

[063] - ziproxy 1.9.0
  by Daniel Mealha Cabrita (http://freshmeat.net/users/dancab/)
  Fri, May 19th 2006 02:59

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Ziproxy is a forwarding (non-caching) proxy that gzips text and
HTML files, and reduces the size of images by converting them to lower
quality JPEGs. It is intended to increase the speed for low-speed Internet
connections and it's suitable for both home and professional usage. Ziproxy
is fully configurable and also features transparent proxy mode, preemptive
name resolution, operation in either daemon mode or (x)inetd mode, a
detailed access log with compression statistics, basic authentication, and
more.

Changes: A monolithic architecture is now used, since it is much faster,
so netd is not used anymore. A transparent proxy mode was added. A
detailed access log with compression stats was added. Daemon mode was
added. Code cleanup was done. More tuning options were added.
