System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command
set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration
framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, usbnet, and
PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be
added without overall design changes.

Changes: This release features major code cleanup along with new features,
bugfixes, some changes, and new documentation.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: amoeba is an XML-based framework for Web environment development
backed by XML databases (the eXist native XML database). It's deployable
as a war archive in servlet containers (like Tomcat and/or Jetty). Almost
no Java knowledge or Java programming is required while developing with
amoeba, except for extending base framework functionality. Programming in
amoeba means writing XML documents. The environment has four
domain-specific languages: pipeline (general XML processing using language
features and by calling tasks), sitemap (for connecting the Web environment
to all other languages), form (HTTP forms processing), and modification.

Changes: The major environment enhacement is Berkeley DB XML integration
with transaction support. A resource language for managing files and
directories is added. It is very useful for checking if a file exists and
so on. The unit testing environment has been improved, and includes a
Berkeley DB XML-based crude example for a rootstock demo application.

clients. A special Webmail module enables email access and delivery from
Web browsers. During the evaluation period, users are provided with full
technical support.

Changes: This release adds core List Server features. The entire IMAP
engine has been rewritten to allow better command parsing and faster
mailbox access. This release adds Storage Compactor and Error Checker in
CLI/WebAdmin, a migration engine between a remote IMAP server and AXIGEN,
and a configurable maximum number of messages per second for each account.
POP3 users can access folders other than INBOX by using the "user+folder"
login username. New features in SMTPIncoming, SMTPOutgoing,

[005] - Axiomatic Multi-Platform C 1.3.6
  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Thu, Dec 29th 2005 10:18

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code. It is useful for writing
new applications using existing C skill-sets and porting C programs.

Changes: The COMPILE utility has been improved to recompile modified
source files only. Several bugfixes have been made.

  by Jan Kratochvil (http://freshmeat.net/users/kratochvil/)
  Thu, Dec 29th 2005 01:13

System :: Filesystems

About: Captive provides full read/write access to NTFS disk drives in the
WINE way by using the original Microsoft Windows ntfs.sys driver. It
emulates the required subsystems of the Microsoft Windows kernel by
reusing one of the original ntoskrnl.exe, ReactOS parts, or this project's
own reimplementations on a case by case basis. Involvement of the original
driver files was chosen to achieve the best and unprecedented filesystem
compatibility and safety.

Changes: Support for the Linux kernel's FUSE interface was added. A script
for properly unmounting NTFS filesystems on shutdown was added. Updates
were made for recent Microsoft binaries and GNU/Linux build environment
compatibility.

  Thu, Dec 29th 2005 14:41

Documentation
Education
Internet

About: The Goal of Hilbert II, which is in the tradition of Hilbert's
program, is the creation of a system that enables a working mathematician
to put theorems and proofs (in the formal language of predicate calculus)
into it. These proofs are automatically verified by a proof checker.
Because this system is not centrally administered and enables references
to any location on the Internet, a world wide mathematical knowledge base
could be built. Any proof of a theorem in this "mathematical web" could be
drilled down to the very elementary rules and axioms. To make it more than
a huge number of logical correct formulas, it also contains information in
"common mathematical language". Think of an incredible number of
mathematical textbooks with hyperlinks, and each of its proofs could be
verified by *Hilbert II*. For each theorem, the dependency of other
propositions, definitions, and axioms could be easily derived.

Changes: A new node type is now supported: RULE. This enables meta rule
declarations. The first meta rule declaration is used to make set
definitions by properties possible: {x | phi(x)}. The usage itself needs a
new term element: SET. A new proposition shows how to transform the new
syntax into the old one. In generated LaTeX files, formulas are are now
surrounded by a longtable environment. This was necessary because formulas
can exceed the line.

[026] - LLnextgen 0.2.5
  by gphalkes (http://freshmeat.net/users/gphalkes/)
  Thu, Dec 29th 2005 07:59

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: LLnextgen is a (partial) reimplementation of the LLgen
Extended-LL(1) parser generator that is part of the Amsterdam Compiler Kit
(ACK). It takes an EBNF-like description of the grammar with associated
semantic actions in C as input, and generates C code. The generated code
is strict ANSI C, so it should compile with all current C compilers.

Changes: This release adds dependency information generation and fixes
several very minor bugs.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: This version offers improved support for the import of courses
from BlackBoard(tm) and a direct link to the National Science Foundation
National Science Digital Library (nsdl.org). Messaging functions have been
enhanced, both within courses and domain-wide. Scheduling functionality now
includes "slots" of availability. The system makes it easier to switch
between servers in mid-session and correctly handles time zone
differences.

[035] - Openwall tcb suite 1.0
  by Solar Designer (http://freshmeat.net/users/solardiz/)
  Thu, Dec 29th 2005 14:20

Security
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The tcb suite implements the alternative password shadowing scheme
on Openwall GNU/*/Linux (Owl) which allows many core system utilities
(passwd(1) being the primary example) to operate with little privilege. It
is being made available separately from Owl primarily for use by other
distributions. This package contains three core components of the tcb
suite: pam_tcb (a PAM module which supersedes pam_unix), libnss_tcb (the
accompanying NSS module), and libtcb (a library for accessing tcb shadow
files, used by the PAM and NSS modules as well as by user management tools
on Owl).

Changes: Support for OpenPAM and for the new interfaces provided by
Linux-PAM 0.99.1.0 and above has been implemented (older versions of
Linux-PAM continue to be supported). The list of global symbols exported
by the library, NSS, and PAM modules has been restricted. The PAM module
will no longer invoke openlog(3)/closelog(3) by default (according to the
new Linux-PAM convention), unless the new option "openlog" is specified.

[041] - Python milter 0.8.5
  by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
  Thu, Dec 29th 2005 22:11

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run
with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail
talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter
informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the
milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT,
REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from
sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also
ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.

Changes: A simple trusted_forwarder implementation was added. The
access_file neutral policy was fixed. The Received-SPF header was moved to
the beginning of the headers. Keyword info was supplied for all results in
the Received-SPF header. The guessed SPF result was moved to a separate
header. The build was fixed to activate smfi_insheader only when
SMFIR_INSHEADER is defined. A NULL MX in spf.py is now handled. In-process
GOSSiP server support was added (to be extended later). The CBV cache is
expired and auto-whitelist entries are renewed.

[042] - Python Remote Call Module 0.0.3
  by Gernot Payer (http://freshmeat.net/users/sigepaye/)
  Thu, Dec 29th 2005 07:57

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Python Remote Call Module allows the instantiation and transparent
usage of remote objects. All objects are server-based. On the client side,
dynamically created stub objects make using these remote objects very easy.
Mechanisms for connection handling and automatic server setup allow passing
of local references to the server.

Changes: All previous stub objects have been replaced by a single stub
object which uses on-demand retrieval of attributes of remote objects.
This way, the behavior of the stub object is much more flexible and
smoother. A first draft of an authentication framework has been
implemented so PyRCall can support many different authentication methods.
Support for username/password-based authentication has been implemented.
