Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that can help you develop and deploy high-performance
software systems faster and better. ACE is especially useful for systems
that use network and/or inter-process communications and that take
advantage of multithreading. While the ACE source code is free, that's not
the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's wrappers and higher-level
patterns help you develop your software quickly and portably, helping you
to complete your projects on time and within budget.

Changes: Code cleanups. Lex compatibility fixes. Platform-specific fixes
for Linux, Solaris, OS X, VxWorks, Windows CE, Cygwin, and LynxOS. Fixes
when using GCC, Sun, HP, Borland, and Intel C++ compilers. Documentation
updates. Namespace cleanups. Support for nmake and structured exceptions.
Numerous bugfixes, including SSL, IPv6, string size reporting, MPC, 64-bit
support, null pointer dereferencing in logs, and floating-point
optimizations. More regression tests.

System :: Monitoring

About: Arrayprobe is a command-line utility that reports the status of an
HP (Compaq) arraycontroller. This version only supports the newer
controllers that use the cciss driver. It works in two modes. The default
mode reports the status in a single line and can be used as a Nagios
check. The second mode is activated by the -r option and prints a complete
status report of the controller and any events in the event queue.

  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 11:00

About: BLAST is a set of similarity search programs designed to explore
all of the available sequence databases regardless of whether the query is
protein or DNA. It uses a heuristic algorithm which seeks local as opposed
to global alignments, and is therefore able to detect relationships among
sequences which share only isolated regions of similarity. It can be run
locally as a full executable, and can be used to run BLAST searches
against private, local databases, or downloaded copies of the NCBI
databases. It runs on Mac OS, Win32, LINUX, Solaris, IBM AIX, SGI, Compaq
OSF, and HP- UX systems.

Changes: Support for large search word sizes and multiple searches has
been added. There are some code speedups.

  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 10:44

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment

About: FlashUnity is a channel-based approach to an XML flash
communications server and chat room. By using the concept of channels and
filters, each of which handles a different task, the FlashUnity server
becomes extremely flexible and easy to extend. Also, by using channels it
is possible to run multiple modular functions within the same server.
Filters allow you to prefilter input for all channels or provide other
functionality to all channels. This is a total rewrite of CyberSS, and the
APIs and XML have multiple major changes. Each module, filter, and the chat
client are in their own seperate PEAR package.

Changes: Improvements to debug. The debug setting is now followed

About: GTK ADI Library is a library containing GTK ADI widgets. ADI stands
from Advanced Document Interface, and is an MDI (Multiple Document
Interface) implementation. It contains a common MDI interface widget and
several MDI representations (views). There are currently two views
available: a "classical for GTK" tabbed MDI view, and an aligned MDI view.
The aligned MDI view can have all child windows visible on the same parent
screen, but without wasted space between them as can usually happen when a
traditional MDI widget is used. Further development will include a window
MDI view, where all the child windows are represented by the standard GTK
windows or dialogs.

Software Development :: Documentation
System

About: The Heirloom Documentation Tools provide troff, nroff, and related
utilities to format manual pages and other documents for output on
terminals and printers. They are portable and enhanced versions of the
respective OpenSolaris utilities, which descend from ditroff and the
historical Unix troff. troff provides advanced typographical features such
as kerning, tracking, and hanging characters. It can access PostScript Type
1, OpenType, and TrueType fonts directly. Internationalized hyphenation,
international paper sizes, and UTF-8 input are supported.

Changes: Unicode mapping tables from OpenType and TrueType fonts are now
used for converting input characters. The ".fps" request has been
introduced to map troff special characters like "\(*a" or "\(+-" to a
custom font. The warning categories "missing" and "delim" are now
available. Facilities to create cut marks and registration marks as well
as "boxes" for print production PDF documents have been added.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: This is a version of mpg123, the well-known and highly efficient
MP3 player, with a generic control interface that has been enhanced with
the possibility to control the built-in equalizer in real-time. It also
combines some some patches from the AMF and Cool Feet Audio projects and
some changes for the control interface with the (security) fixes from the
Debian package.

Changes: This release fixes some bugs that prevented mpg123 from working
on an Alpha machine (Tru64 Unix; "dec" make target). The HTTP bugfix from
Debian's r20 was integrated.

[030] - MultiTail 3.8.0
  by Folkert van Heusden (http://freshmeat.net/users/fvh/)
  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 06:54

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: This is a merge of stable release 3.6.1 with development version
3.7.6. File sizes can now be abbreviated into KB/MB/GB. Parts of lines
from the input can now be removed. The regular expression menu now also
displays how often a regexp is matched. The terminal can now be split into
more than two columns. Validity checks for commandline parameters were
improved. One can now clear a window without the scroll-back buffer being
cleared. Some memory leaks and segfaults were fixed.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: MuSE is a user-friendly tool for network audio streaming, making
life easier for independent free speech radio stations. It can play, mix,
encode, and stream sound from and to the Internet in both MP3 and
Ogg/Vorbis format to be listened by the majority of audio players. It can
simultaneously mix up to 6 encoded audio channels plus a sound card input
signal, sending the result to an Icecast/Shoutcast server. It offers GTK2,
ncurses, and Carbon (OSX) interfaces for real-time operation and a full set
of command line options.

Changes: Several bugfixes have been backported from the development
branch, providing better stability, usability, and sound quality. The code
has been cleaned up and made compliant with most recent GCC versions;
unstable components (ncurses and gtk1 GUIs) are deprecated. This release
is well recommended for production use.

About: Philip's Music Writer is a program for typesetting music. It reads
text files as input, and generates PostScript as output. It can also write
simple MIDI files for proofhearing purposes. PMW is written in C and is
freestanding; that is, it does not require additional processing software.
It is a Linux/Unix port of a program that has run for over a decade on
Acorn systems, where it was known as Philip's Music Scribe.

Changes: Minor bugfixes in the chord name transposition code. The
(previously undocumented) midistart directive actually works, and has been
documented.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: Plait (pronounced "play") is a music query system and music player
front end. It understands brief, easy to type queries that pick a single
song, mix queries that combine works from multiple artists, and stream
queries that find Shoutcast radio streams. A variety of filters are
available to pick just the music you want to hear. In order to actually
play the music it finds, Plait hands off a play list to one of the
supported music players.

Changes: This is the first stable release. A minor bug was fixed in
plaiter, the command-line front end to command-line music players. This
bug caused a broken man page.

[035] - pmacct 0.9.6
  by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 10:15

Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: pmacct is a small set of IPv4/IPv6 accounting and aggregation
tools. A pluggable architecture allows you to store collected traffic data
into memory tables or SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite 3.x) databases. It
supports fully customizable historical data breakdown, flow sampling,
filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Libpcap, NetFlow
v1/v5/v7/v8/v9, and sFlow v2/v4/v5 are supported, both unicast and
multicast. Also, a client program makes it easy to export data to tools
like RRDtool, GNUPlot, Net-SNMP, MRTG, and Cacti.

Changes: Support for 'sql_multi_values' has been introduced into the
SQLite 3.x plugin. It allows you to chain multiple INSERT queries into a
single SQL statement. MySQL plugin fix: AS numbers were sent to the
database unquoted while the corresponding field was declared as CHAR; by
correctly wrapping AS numbers, a major performance increase has been
confirmed. 'pidfile' key behaviour has been corrected in both nfacctd and
sfacctd. The 'daemonize' key was incorrectly disabling the signal handlers
from the Core Process; the issue has been fixed.

[036] - QEMU 0.8.0
  by Mr.700 (http://freshmeat.net/users/mr700/)
  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 01:56

System :: Emulators

About: QEMU is a fast processor emulator. Using dynamic translation it
achieves a reasonable speed while being easy to port to new host CPUs. In
its user mode emulation mode, it can launch Linux processes compiled for
one CPU on another CPU. Linux system calls are converted because of
endianness and 32/64 bit mismatches. In its full system emulation mode,
it emulates a full system, including a processor and various
peripherials.

Changes: Support for ARM Integrator/CP board system emulation, support for
MIPS R4K system emulation, and initial SMP support on x86 with up to 255
CPUs. Many new audio emulation features were included along with initial
USB support and new networking options for VLAN support between several
QEMU instances.

[038] - rxvt-unicode 6.1
  by Marc A. Lehmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcg1/)
  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 06:54

Desktop Environment
Software Development :: Internationalization
Terminals

About: rxvt-unicode is a clone of the well known terminal emulator rxvt,
modified to store text in Unicode (either UCS-2 or UCS-4) and to use
locale-correct input and output. It also supports mixing multiple fonts at
the same time, including Xft fonts.

Changes: This release mainly fixes some bugs that have crept into the 6.0
rewrite: lines do not glue together anymore, selecting scrolling text no
longer leads to segfaults, the selection gets displayed properly when it's
partially off-screen, and the iso14755 overlay is at the correct position
again. The is8859-7 table (Greek) has been updated to iso8859-7:2003.
Also, the iso14755 overlay now displays rendition info, and rectangular
selections now strip trailing whitespace.

[039] - Simplebackup 1.7.0 rc1 (Release Candidates)
  by Miguel Angelo (http://freshmeat.net/users/miguelangelo/)
  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 10:43

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Simplebackup is a cross-platform backup program. It reads a
configuration file, then it builds a compressed file for each of your
backup directories or files on your backup list, and places the compressed
files into another location. For example, this location can be a network
mapped drive in Windows, an NFS mounted drive in Unix, another hard disk,
an FTP server, one or more email accounts, or a tape device (Unix only).
This will duplicate your information, doing the so called "backup".

Changes: This release adds support for encryption of the backup files. It
adds the simplecrypt program, which allows the encryption/decryption of
any file desired. There are some bugfixes, several small improvements, and
improvements in the documentation. The new encryption algorithm SimpleCrypt
is built into simplebackup (no modules are required).

  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 10:48

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Stunnix Perl Web Server is an advanced Web server developed for
writing browser-based applications and database-driven catalogues or
presentations that reside on CDROM or DVD, internally implemented as
Perl-driven or PHP-driven Web sites that store data in a database also
located on CDROM. It produces a single CD that works on Windows, Mac OS X,
and Linux/x86, without requiring any additional software on the user's
computer. All an author needs to do to build a cross-platform
browser-based application or CDROM is to copy scripts to their proper
directories. HTML::Mason and mod_perl-like execution modes are supported
for Perl-driven Web sites.

Changes: A Web site can be automatically opened in MSIE in kiosk mode on
Windows upon startup of the Web server. Support for PHP on Mac OS X has
been fixed. Support for using the default browser on Windows has been
fixed.

  by Hiroyuki Yamamoto (http://freshmeat.net/users/hiroy/)
  Tue, Dec 27th 2005 01:56

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)

About: Sylpheed is a GTK+ based, lightweight, and fast email client.
Almost all commands are accessible with the keyboard. It also has many
features such as multiple accounts, POP3/APOP support, thread display, and
multipart MIME. One of Sylpheed's future goals is to be fully
internationalized. The messages are managed in the MH format, so you'll be
able to use it together with another mailer that uses the MH format.

Changes: The forwarding of messages with attachments was modified. A bug
where the previously selected row was removed from the view instead of the
currently selected one when deleting folders from the context menu was
fixed. An issue where messages with subjects including characters that
can't be used for filenames couldn't be attached on Win32 was fixed.
Windows-1252 was added for display encoding. Duplicate retrieval of
messages no longer occurs after incomplete POP3 sessions.

System :: Networking
System :: Operating System

About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the
system CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component
to the Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL
router/firewall with proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards
support an optional on board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external
components of a traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be
directly connected to the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols,
ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay, PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming
(API), BiSync(API), and SDLC(API). Furthermore, WANPIPE supports custom
API development such as: Credit card verification, Voice-over IP,
Satellite Comm. All device drivers are part of the standard Linux Kernel
distribution.

Changes: Updated to kernel 2.6.14. Major bugfixes to many modules.
