Artistic Software
Communications
Communications :: BBS

About: alph implements and analyzes historical and traditional ciphers and
codes, such as polyalphabetic, substitutional, and mixed employing
human-reconstructable algorithms. It provides a pipe filter interface in
order to encrypt and decrypt block text to achieve transparency. The
program is meant to be used in conjunction with external programs that
transfer data, resulting in transparent encryption or decryption of
information. The program can thus be used as a mail filter, IRC filter, IM
filter, and so on.

Changes: The TEA cipher has been temporarily removed. Support for
computing string permutations and several hashing functions have been
added. The help text displacement has been fixed so that alph properly
displays its usage, and the manpage has been updated to reflect the
changes.

[003] - Avango 1.0.1
  by Jürgen Wind (http://freshmeat.net/users/jogo_sf/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 22:57

About: AVANGO is an object-oriented framework for the development of
distributed, interactive VE (Virtual Environments) applications. Data
distribution is achieved by transparent replication of a shared scene
graph among the participating processes of a distributed application. A
sophisticated group communication system is used to guarantee state
consistency even in the presence of late joining and leaving processes.
The familiar dataflow graph found in modern stand-alone 3D-application
toolkits extends nicely to the distributed case.

Changes: This is a minor bugfix release which fixes some small but nasty
bugs in the system. It should be source code compatible with 1.0.0. Main
development continues on CVS HEAD, which will not be compatible with
1.0.0.

Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale

About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.

Changes: The renderer has been modified to plot the symbol from the
current point rather than the origin.

About: Beesoft Commander is a file manager (like Norton Commander) for
Linux. It is based on Qt-GUI.

Changes: Many parameters are now saved when the program closes and are
restored when the program next starts. For better operation on laptops,
buttons were added to the button bar for selection, unselection, and
reversing of selected files on both panels. The same options are also in
the program menu.

  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 13:08

About: Bocken is a package manager that handles forward and reverse
recursive dependency resolving, installations, uninstallations, and
install logging, and patching, unpacking, and integrity checks. It does
not rely on a database and configuration files are made in an XML-like
format. It handles even the most locked down, proxied networks very well
and has an intrinsic adaptability with LFS and "from source
distributions".

Changes: Bockenlog logged too much due to a slight typo. A missing include
was added.

[007] - bpkg 0.5
  by Alec Thomas (http://freshmeat.net/users/alecthomas/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 11:08

System :: Archiving :: Packaging

About: bpkg is a utility that tries to simplify the process of trying out
new programs from source. For most packages, this can be as simple as
"bpkg <url or tarball>". bpkg will download, extract, configure, compile,
install, generate a package in your system's native format, and finally
integrate that package into your system's packaging system so that you can
remove it cleanly. It has auto-detection for Arch Linux, Slackware, Red
Hat, Gentoo, and SuSE (though not all packaging back-ends are complete).
bpkg is not intended as a replacement for normal packaging utilities.

Changes: The build section was refactored so that it's cleaner.
Self-packaging was fixed so it should actually work if you don't already
have installwatch installed. The --build-with option was added. By using
--skip-build and --install-with, bpkg can now be used as a substitute for
checkinstall.

  by rwpenney (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwpenney/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 03:07

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: cryptmount is a utility for GNU/Linux operating systems which
allows an ordinary user to mount an encrypted filesystem. cryptmount was
written to address differences between the capabilities of the loopback
device and the newer, preferred, device-mapper mechanisms of the 2.6
kernel series, which make it more difficult for a non-root user to
configure the devices necessary for access to an encrypted filesystem.
After the initial configuration of the encrypted filesystem, an ordinary
user can mount and unmount the filesystem on demand, solely by providing
the decryption password.

Changes: Improved error detection and a fix for a non-default key cipher
bug.

[015] - errhdl 0.2
  by Jan Behrens (http://freshmeat.net/users/jbehrens/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 03:13

Software Development

About: liberrhdl is a small C library that offers error handling methods
similar to the exception handling in C++. In the event of errors, no
exception objects are thrown, but an error class name and an error message
are set, and execution continues at the next "OnError" statement. The
library can be seen as a nice frontend to setjmp/longjmp. It is thread
safe and supports the use of POSIX threads.

Changes: This release added specific support for POSIX threads, included a

Security :: Cryptography

About: Fiked is a fake IKE daemon that supports just enough of the
standards and Cisco extensions to attack commonly found insecure Cisco
PSK+XAUTH VPN setups in what could be described as a semi-MitM attack.
Basically, knowing the pre-shared key, also known as shared secret or
group password, the VPN gateway can be impersonated in IKE phase 1, in
order to learn XAUTH user credentials in phase 2. The configuration
supported by fiked is IKE aggressive mode using pre-shared keys and XAUTH.
Supported algorithms are DES, 3DES, AES128, AES192, AES256, MD5, SHA1, and
DH groups 1, 2, and 5. Main mode is not supported.

Changes: A portability update was made, so FakeIKEd now also builds on

About: John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for
many flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting different
architectures), DOS, Win32, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to
detect weak Unix passwords. It supports several crypt(3) password hash
types which are most commonly found on various Unix flavors, as well as
Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP LM hashes. Several other hash types
are added with contributed patches.

Changes: Many enhancements to the code have been made, including to the
handling of hex-encoded hashes (such as LM hashes), the Makefile, the "p"
(pluralize) wordlist rules command, unafs, and charset files handling. A
few bugs have been fixed. The charset files have been updated and included
with this development version, a new pre-defined "incremental" mode "Alnum"

[028] - LibDsk 1.1.8 (Development)
  by John Elliott (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnelliott/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 07:34

System :: Emulators

About: LibDsk is a library that attempts to create uniform functions for
accessing floppy drives, raw "dd" disk images, and disk image files in
various emulator formats. Its intended use is for emulator authors; it
also includes some sample tools to read sectors from discs in CP/M, DOS,
and Acorn formats. There is special-case code for direct access to the
floppy controller under Linux, and to access the floppy driver under
Windows. Java (JNI) bindings are included.

Changes: The Apridisk driver now supports disc images that start with a
"creator" record.

[030] - libebt 1.2.1
  by Ciaran McCreesh (http://freshmeat.net/users/ciaranm/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 23:00

Software Development

About: The libebt library provides a clean way of getting human-readable
backtrace messages in C++. It uses the RAII (resource acquisition is
initialization) idiom to manage backtrace stack items without requiring
macros, control structures, or an external debugger.

Changes: A convenience constructor was added to Backtraceable<> to
simplify creating instances from other Backtraceable<> instances (possibly
with different tags). The configure script was tweaked to do a better job
of selecting the correct -W compiler switches. The include directives in
the pthread test case were fixed to work correctly when using the Intel
compiler.

About: The Linux Quake Howto is a modern guide to Quake, a collection of
the most useful tips, and a pointer to the best resources still available
on the Web. The focus is on GLQuake, but it also covers Quakeworld, Quake
II, and III.

Changes: QuDos has recently ported several Q1 engines, including NehQuake
and JoeQuake, to Linux. Some of them also work with FreeBSD. The 2.01
release of the Quake-HOWTO now includes information about these ports. The
installation and trouble-shooting sections were improved. A link to a

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: This release updates the Google Blog search engine driver and
fixes the URL output format.

[033] - mwcollect 3.0.2
  by Georg 'oxff' Wicherski (http://freshmeat.net/users/oxff/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 21:32

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: mwcollect is an easy solution to collect worm-like malware in a
non-native environment like FreeBSD or Linux. The first versions were used
to collect binaries for botnet monitoring, and bots are still what it is
mostly collecting. Some people consider it a next generation honeypot;
however, that comparison often leads to the misunderstanding that
computers running mwcollect can actually be infected with the malware,
which is not the case.

Changes: A vuln-ms0551 module (tcp/1025 MSDTC action; Dasher.A-C) was
added. Shell parsing was improved. Fixes were made regarding startup file
permissions. Various bugfixes were made. Other changes were done.

[034] - NanoVM 20051217
  by Till Harbaum (http://freshmeat.net/users/harbaum/)
  Sat, Dec 17th 2005 11:07

About: NanoVM is a tiny (less than 8 kB of code including simple native
classes and a bootloader) implementation of the Java VM. It currently runs
on Linux and the AVR microcontroller family. Unix/Linux is supported as the
main development and testing platform, whereas the VM is primarily intended
to be used on tiny embedded devices such as the AVR. The VM can very easily
be ported for other targets.

Changes: The support tool (NanoVMTool) has been converted from using
javax.comm to rxtx, thus allowing it to now work under Linux, Windows, and
MacOS. Several improvements were done to the VM. Plenty of new native
methods have been added for generic AVR support. LCD support has been
added together with example schematics on which to base your own projects.
The Mega32 is now officially supported and can be used as an example to
expand the NanoVM to further target platforms.

About: Open Administration for Schools (OAfS) is a Web-based school
administration package. Open Admin does demographics, attendance,
discipline, report cards, and has an online gradebook and parent viewing
function. It is designed for elementary, K-12, and small high schools. It
generates plain HTML and uses LaTeX for PDF generation. It also includes
special education and division-wide central office modules (all schools
run on the same server with different virtual sites; two sites per school,
one for teachers, and one for the office). Parent functions are by separate
parent/school site.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: Openmailadmin is a little administration interface to every
complete IMAP mail server daemon. It supports every feature IMAP provides,
and fits in most MTA configurations. A key feature is the non-standard,
generic administration hierarchy which not only seperates "normal users"
from "administrators", but enables the mailserver-master to create
instances between them. You will be able to let other users create their
own sub-users and thus either share a single mail server between different
organizations or project your company's employee structure. It excels with
features such as regex addresses and folder ACL management.
