Communications
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Systems Administration

About: AFD is a program to automatically distribute files either locally
or to remote hosts. The files are distributed by using FTP or SMTP, and
can be sent in parallel and with priority. It provides a GUI to monitor
and control the distribution and extensive logging of all activities.

Changes: A problem where files that had dates in the future where deleted
immediatly when age-limit option was set was fixed. When sending HTTP
request, the header may not contain empty lines. The locking error which
allowed jobs to be handled twice was corrected. When opening the job
details window it will only resize this window and not afd_ctrl window.
The speed was increased for initial visualizing of afd_ctrl and mon_ctrl
dialog. An option to set the default SMTP server and From: line was added
in AFD_CONFIG.

  by aquamaniac (http://freshmeat.net/users/aquamaniac/)
  Thu, Dec 15th 2005 10:45

Office/Business :: Financial
Software Development :: Libraries

About: AqBanking is a modular and generic interface to online banking
tasks, financial file formats (import/export) and bank/country/currency
information. It provides frontends for Qt, KDE, GTK, and console.
AqBanking uses backend plugins to actually perform the online tasks. HBCI,
OFX Direct Connect, and DTAUS discs are currently supported. AqBanking is
used by GnuCash, KMyMoney, and QBankManager.

Changes: This release fixes some network problems and cleans up the build
system. It allows you to choose the transfer mode independently for
transfer orders and debit notes.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: A MetaPost-like makepen function that allows the pen nib to be
changed to a polygonal (possibly nonconvex) cyclic path was added. A
unitsize argument was added to shipout. Three-dimensional lighting effects
were added and illustrated with the Gouraud shading of a sphere. The
MidArrow attribute was fixed. Built-in functions now have named arguments.
Brackets are now part of the quote syntax. The write command was
generalized to allow writing a list of vectors as columns. The -noView
command was replaced by -nView or -no View. Several segmentation faults
were fixed. Custom axis types were documented.

Information Management
System
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: The ATA over Ethernet Tools are intended for use in conjunction
with an ATA over Ethernet (AoE) driver for a Linux 2.6 kernel. They
perform simple tasks like listing available devices, triggering device
discovery, and restricting the network interfaces on which AoE is
performed.

Changes: The default number of slot addresses per shelf address is now 16,
in accordance with the AoE driver in 2.6.14. A new aoe-revalidate command
uses the new "revalidate" feature in the AoE driver, allowing online
devices to change size.

About: DarwinPorts makes the world of open source software available to
your Mac. There are over 3000 software titles (“ports”), each one
installable with a single command. This is probably the biggest, most up
to date open source software collection for Mac OS X. DarwinPorts works
much like the ports collections of the major BSD operating systems.

Changes: The syntax of port(1) was enhanced. Space is now saved by
compressing all man pages automatically. It is now possible to install
multiple ports with one command. New meta-groups for executing commands on
were implemented. launchd is now used on 10.4 (SystemStarter on 10.3). Help
is now more easily available. Portfiles can now be edited directly via
port(1). Disk images are available for 10.3 and 10.4.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: DirIndexFaker is a PHP script designed to produce fake Apache
directory listings for the purpose of slowing down and overloading with
false positives the Web spiders used by the RIAA, MPAA, etc.

Changes: This release adds the ability to slow down RIAA/MPAA bots with a
usleep call. This is enabled by default, but can be disabled by commenting
out a line at the top of index.php. The bottom row has been fixed to make
server info match the actual server version running on your host. The
random seed has been changed so that filenames/sizes will only change once
a day. This makes it harder to detect as a 'fake'.

About: ELOG Electronic Web Logbook is an electronic logbook with a Web
interface. It can be used to maintain personal or shared logbooks, with
the ability to add attachments to logbook pages. Logbook entries can be
categorized with user-defined classes, and queried using filters on these
classes. Automatic email notifications can be generated on new entries
based on the classes. The ELOG server is a small stand-alone C program,
which runs under Linux and Windows. No other packages are required. The
logbooks are saved in plain ASCII files for easy and fast access.

Changes: The major new feature is the introduction of the ELCode tags.
They are similar to the well known BBCode tags, and let you format an elog
entry. It is now also possible to embed inline images in an elog entry,
which are then sent embedded in the email notification. The code
management software has been switched from CVS to Subversion, which has
the advantage that one can subscribe to new revisions via RSS and easily
obtain a tar ball from the current revision.

  Thu, Dec 15th 2005 22:23

Utilities

About: Object Shell (osh) is the interpreter for a Python-like language
that supports the composition of commands through piping, similar to pipes
in a Unix shell. However, the key difference is that objects are passed
through the pipes in osh instead of streams of text. The objects passed
between commands can be Python built-ins or complex objects such as dates
and times, database rows, or OS resources. Objects can be automatically
converted to strings for integration with the conventional Unix
environment.

Changes: The squish command was fixed. If there are no arguments to
squish, then "+" is assumed.

[060] - Penrose 0.9.8
  by yingyang (http://freshmeat.net/users/jimyang/)
  Thu, Dec 15th 2005 07:57

About: Penrose is a virtual directory server based on Apache Directory
server. A virtual directory does not store any information itself, unlike
other LDAP implementations. Requests received from LDAP client
applications are processed by the virtual directory server and passed on
to the data source which hosts the desired data. Frequently, this data
source will be a relational database, and more often than not, it will be
the authoritative source of the directory information.

Changes: Performance was optimized. Persistent cache was implemented. The

[061] - Plash 1.15
  by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
  Thu, Dec 15th 2005 22:25

Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System

About: Plash is a secure execution environment for running Linux programs
with the minimum necessary privileges. It is similar to chroot jails, but
is more lightweight and flexible. You can use Plash to grant a process
read-only or read-write access to specific files and directories, mapped
at any point in the filesystem namespace. Plash provides two interfaces:
pola-run, a command line tool, and a Bash-like shell for interactive use.
Plash does not require a modified kernel, and it works with Linux
executables, provided they are dynamically linked.

Changes: This release introduces a patch to Gtk that changes
GtkFileChooserDialog to use Plash's powerbox. This provides a mechanism,
transparent to the user, for granting Gtk applications access to specific
files, so that users do not need to trust the application with access to
all of their files. A number of issues have been fixed so that Konqueror
and Gnumeric are able to run under the Plash environment. The Plash shell
has been renamed to "pola-shell", to distinguish it from the rest of
Plash's components.

  Thu, Dec 15th 2005 00:11

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: System Configuration Collector (SCC) is yet another configuration
collector. It consists of a client and a server part. The client collects
configuration data in a structured snapshot, compares the new snapshot
with the previous one, and adds differences to a logbook. Then the
snapshot and the logbook are converted to HTML for local inspection.
Optionally, the data can be sent to a system running the server software.
On the server, summaries of the data are generated, and search/compare
operations on the snapshots and logbooks are available via a Web
interface.

Changes: This release featured extensions and corrections for AIX and SuSe
