AppleScript: The Definitive Guide
by Catie Flick (http://freshmeat.net/~liedra/)
Section: Book Reviews
Sat, Sep 24th 2005 00:00

AppleScript: The Definitive Guide most certainly is a definitive guide,
with an awful lot of information about anything and everything you could
possibly want to know about AppleScript. The problem is that the nuggets
of useful information are often hidden deep within either complicated
examples revolving around expensive specialist software, or in amongst
extremely detailed in-depth examinations of the underlying processes
running AppleScript. Although interesting to some, this will be a little
daunting to the average programmer attracted to AppleScript. However, the
book is definitely an excellent reference for existing AppleScript
programmers, those who have some previous knowledge in programming, or
those interested in MacOS X technology.

[001] - ALSA MIDI Kommander 0.2.3
  by Pedro Lopez-Cabanillas (http://freshmeat.net/users/plcl/)
  Sat, Sep 24th 2005 01:01

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI

About: ALSA MIDI Kommander is a DCOP interface exposing many ALSA
Sequencer features for shell scripts, Kommander scripts, or KDE programs
requiring MIDI sequencer services. A few utilities are included, which can
be used both as programming examples and as real work tools. The main
program, "kaseq" is a single executable used as a DCOP service program. It
runs as a daemon, allowing only a single running instance, and provides a
system tray icon to give visual feedback for MIDI activity and a way to
control the program's execution.

About: Backup Buddy is a set of scripts which make versioned,
disk-to-disk, backups via rsync easy. It allows the user to set up
disk-to-disk backups that happen automatically.

Changes: Support for backup groups that allow an arbitrary grouping of
accounts was added. The process self-check was altered to allow multiple
instances of program to run at the same time with different account/group
name calls.

Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Investment
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CCAPI is a financial application library for Java. CCAPI provides
interfaces for automated stock exchange trading through Cortal Consors. In
addition, CCAPI provides functions to retrieve online quotes from various
data sources, including EUWAX, Consors, Comdirect, and Yahoo!.
Furthermore, CCAPI provides a comprehensive library of technical and
mathematical indicator implementations, like MACD, SMA, EMA, RSI, Williams
%R, Correlation, and more.

Changes: The Database layer has been extended with two new functions:
saveDaxTick() and getDaxTick(). These two functions save and load the dax
tick from the file system, making it available for other processes. The
file is located at /opt/uls/data/daxTick. The Database layer now tries to
load database properties from /opt/uls/etc/database.properties. This is a
major milestone towards proper integration into Linux as an application
platform.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
System
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Heartbeat provides a heartbeat and IP address takeover functions
for a high-availability Linux cluster. It monitors the members of the
cluster and tells you when one goes down in less than a second. The
current version runs over serial ports and UDP broadcast/multicast, as
well as OpenAIS multicast. It is easily adapted to different interconnect
media and protocols. It will re-allocate IP addresses and other resources
to other members of the cluster when a machine goes down, and move them
back when it comes back up. Versions starting with 2.0 are comparable to
any commercial HA package, providing resource monitoring, larger clusters,
and detailed dependency information.

Changes: A bug in the ping directive was fixed. A check was added to
BasicSanityCheck to check the ping and ping_group directives. cl_status
nodestatus was fixed to return success if a node has the status "ping". A
memory leak in the CRM's LRM interface code was fixed along with the code
that determines which version of the CRM becomes the DC when basic CIB
schema versions differ. It now prefers the older version to be DC instead
of the newer version.

About: psycMUVE is a distributed chat and messaging system based on the
Protocol for SYnchronous Conferencing. PSYC is multicast and routed
between servers and clients in a scalable and efficient way, but users can
also comfortably use IRC clients, telnet, Web chat, or Jabber to enter the

rooms that are freely programmable and cannot be hacked. It also provides
gateways to several IRC networks, but unlike IRC, everyone can run a
server and be an equal member of the PSYC network.

Changes: This release adds several fixes and improvements in the Jabber
implementation, asynchronous authentication, Mediawiki integration, more
ready-to-use conference control options, a multipass shutdown sequence,
new setting to filter presence, and XMLRPC Support. The MUC Emulation now
allows remote Jabber users a large part of the standard PSYC command set,
not just /me. Runtime errors can now be displayed in a fancy per-protocol

  by Torsten Bronger (http://freshmeat.net/users/Bronger/)
  Sat, Sep 24th 2005 04:00

Scientific/Engineering

About: PyVISA is a Python package with bindings to the industry-standard
VISA library. It is used to control measurement devices and test equipment
via GPIB, RS232, and USB.

Changes: The library now explicitly supports serial instruments (RS232 and
parallel port). Default termination characters were optimized for all bus
systems. The documentation was improved.

[027] - sshdfilter 1.3.5
  by Greg (http://freshmeat.net/users/grg/)
  Sat, Sep 24th 2005 13:16

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: sshdfilter automatically blocks ssh brute force attacks by reading
sshd log output in real time and adding iptables rules based on
authentication failures. Block rules are created by logging on with an
invalid user name, or wrongly guessing the password for an existing
account. Block rules are removed after a week to maintain a small list of
blocks. It also comes with a LogWatch filter.

Changes: Support for IPv6 addressing was added, which is needed for some
recent distributions, such as Debian 3.1 Sarge.

[028] - streamsniff 0.03
  by Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/ericgies/)
  Sat, Sep 24th 2005 23:40

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Streamsniff is a small command line tool that sniffs network
traffic for stream URLs. It detects RTSP, MMS, and icy protocols, and
performs a backtrace on HTTP traffic to detect "playlist" URLs. This is
useful if you want to reveal the stream you started with your browser and
don't feel like digging through loads of HTML and Javascript.

Changes: This release adds detection of streams over HTTP. Stream metafile
traceback for MMS, RTSP, and ICY protocols was improved. This version runs
on Linux Intel/AMD and Windows XP SP2.

[030] - Task Coach 0.48
  by Frank Niessink (http://freshmeat.net/users/fniessink/)
  Sat, Sep 24th 2005 14:08

Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and
todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers,
such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide
facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do
consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with
composite tasks.

Changes: The previous release of Task Coach contained two nasty bugs.
Filtering tasks by status ("View" -> "Tasks that are" -> "...") would
cause an exception, and sorting by days left would also cause an
exception. This release fixes those two bugs.

  by time4tea (http://freshmeat.net/users/time4tea/)
  Sat, Sep 24th 2005 23:44

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: Tea Stats is a Web log analysis program. It's written in OO Perl
and is designed to be easily extensible. Currently, it has most of the
features of other well known systems like Webalizer and awstats, with a
compact and legible code base. Clickstream tracking and page graph
analysis are planned soon.

Changes: Site navigation graphing using GraphViz was added. Session
tracking was greatly improved. Browser, OS, worm, and country
identification were improved. Some small performance improvements were
made. The API was refactored slightly to make it easier to add filtering,
enhancement, and analysis modules.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Teddy is a tabular editor and displayer for XML files. It presents
the structure and content of XML files in a way that is both visually
pleasing and easy to use. Its features include the abiltiy to view XML
in an hierarchical way without extraneous syntax or interface elements,
edit data like a spreadsheet, enter data without having to worry about
encoding rules, make major structural changes with minimal effort, cut
and paste between most spreadsheet applications, and export to HTML.

Changes: Text in cells is now allowed to wrap. The display of the hierachy
is now flattened so that all elements are indented within a single column.
Moreover, the hierarchy is retractable and expandable. There is now an
error log interface with the ability to open a problem file in a text
editor. Exported HTML now uses CSS. XML text can be cut and pasted while
maintaining its structure and format. There is now support for various

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering

About: wview is an application that controls a Davis Vantage Pro or
Vantage Pro2 weather station console to retrieve archive records and
current conditions. Archive records may optionally be stored in a
relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a user-defined interval,
wview will use the archive history and current conditions to generate
weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages based on configurable
HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data loggers, as well as
connectivity with a terminal server or serial server via TCP sockets.

Changes: This release increases buffer sizes for FTP usernames and
passwords, changes FTP to use malloc heap instead of radlib buffers for
static rules and work areas, and cleans the format and comments for the
example html-templates.conf configuration file.
