[001] - Aeskuap 0.1.1
  by Alexander Pipelka (http://freshmeat.net/users/pipelka/)
  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 17:03

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Aeskulap is a medical image viewer. It is able to load a series of
special images stored in the DICOM format for review. It is able to query
and fetch DICOM images from archive nodes (also called PACS) over the
network. The goal of this project is to create a full open source
replacement for commercially available DICOM viewers. It is based on
gtkmm, glademm, and gconfmm and designed to run under Linux. Ports of
these packages are available for different platforms. It should be quite
easy to port It to any platform were these packages are available.

Changes: Some minor compilation bugs were fixed. A major bug in the
networking code (C-Find, C-Move) has been fixed. Now it should be possible
to query and retrieve images from any DICOM SCP.

Database :: Front-Ends

About: anymeal is a cookbook database front-end. It can handle more than
100,000 recipes, and can search recipes for a given set of ingredients. It
is designed to be lean and flexible.

Changes: The recipe editor has been enhanced to allow reordering of
categories, ingredients, and instructions. More page breaks have been
added to the "Formatted Object" export. Internationalisation support for
the recipe display and export as HTML, Docbook, and FO documents was
added. With the database wizard, the user now can start importing recipes
right after the database has been created.

[003] - Ascii2Binary 2.8
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 20:43

Utilities

About: The Ascii2Binary project consists of two complementary programs
that convert between textual and binary representations of numbers.
Ascii2Binary reads input consisting of textual representations of numbers
separated by whitespace and produces as output the binary equivalents. It
is useful for generating test data and linking programs that generate
textual output to programs that require binary input. Binary2Ascii
converts binary numbers to text. In both programs, the type and
size/precision of the input or output is selected using command line
flags.

Changes: Support was added for long double on those systems that have it.

[004] - Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript 2005-09-11
  by Terry Burton (http://freshmeat.net/users/terryburton/)
  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 13:03

Information Management
Multimedia :: Graphics
Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale

About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.

Changes: Placement problems with the border of EAN-2 and EAN-5 symbols
have been fixed by amending the baseline of the bars.

[005] - Battle for Survival 0.1.2
  by Menno Lodder (http://freshmeat.net/users/thirler/)
  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 17:11

Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Battle for Survival is a toy/game written in Java. The idea is to
simulate a world with organisms inside. It is a game of life with advanced
rules. The project is meant to have different organisms compete when trying
to survive. Programmers can compete with other life forms.

Changes: A section has been added to the document explaining a first run
for new users. A help section has been added. The problem with memory has
finally been fixed, and the program should now run very long using about
30 MB of memory. The down side of this is that the current version can't
show the long history per individual anymore. Hopefully in the future, an
option can be added to log to a database (or the filesystem in some other
way). A structure error in one of the rules has been fixed. Small bugs
have been fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: C++ ResourcePool is a library which can be used to pool resources
of every kind. It can also be used as an abstraction layer by providing a
unique API for different resources of similar resource types; the most
prominent examples are SQL databases. It includes a convenient way to
access MySQL and Oracle databases in the same way, so that changing from
MySQL to Oracle or vice-versa does not need big code changes.

Changes: This release documents the multi-threading support. It's now
possible to choose at configure time whether to build the library in a
thread safe manner or without any thread safty.

  by Zionly (http://freshmeat.net/users/zionly/)
  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 06:50

System :: Systems Administration

About: Diogene87 is a powerful job scheduling system. It features
centralized management, jobs dependencies, start conditions, planning, a
log of job activity, job monitoring, statistics for job durations, and
resource control.

Changes: All features are implemented and diogene87 is quite stable. The
monitor commands ("ejm" and "etm") accept new options: "-D" prints
job/task description, "-T" prints the target name, "-Q" prints the queue
name. Database saving is done only when it's necessary, which will reduce
the number of access to the hard disk. All messages (error, warning, info)
are sent to syslog. You can use the "-s" option with dio87d to suspend the
engine at startup, which is useful to control the situation after a crash.

[022] - DOMIT! 1.1

  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 04:18

Internet
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: DOMIT! is an XML parser for PHP. It is lightweight, fast, and
implements a generous subset of the DOM Level 2 specification. The primary
goal of DOMIT! is to provide PHP developers with a standards-compliant
means of working with XML, thus ensuring more portable and communicable
code. DOMIT! is not an extension; it is written purely in PHP and should
therefore run on any Web hosting platform with PHP 4 and above installed.
DOMIT! requires coupling with a SAX parser. You can use either the SAXY
parser that comes bundled with DOMIT! or the Expat parser that is included
in most later PHP distributions.

Changes: This release includes better error handling and logging. It also
includes a default error mode whereby DOMIT does not die on an error.

  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 04:19

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: DOMIT! RSS is an RSS parser for PHP. It does not require the
installation of extensions beyond the basic PHP distribution. Unlike most
existing PHP RSS clients, it uses a DOM XML parser (DOMIT!) to convert an
RSS feed into a DOM document that can be traversed using the standard DOM
methods. It is able to parse all flavors of RSS feed, and its API is
designed to work identically across all versions. Its caching mechanism
saves a local copy of the RSS feed and updates it only at specified
intervals. It is able to detect certain types of non-compliant XML and
repair them. The lightweight DOMIT! RSS Lite is available for users who
wish only to extract title, link, and description elements from a feed.

Changes: This release includes better error handling and logging. It also
includes a default error mode whereby DOMIT RSS does not die on an error.
The setRSSTimeout method allows the user to set a maximum time for feed
retrieval.

  by Chris Vine (http://freshmeat.net/users/cvine/)
  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 09:15

About: Efax-gtk provides a GUI frontend for the efax fax program. It
interfaces with efax directly, replacing the scripts supplied with efax,
and can be used for receiving and sending faxes, and for viewing,
printing, and managing faxes which have been received and sent. It also
has a socket interface that provides a "virtual printer" for sending faxes
from word processors and similar programs, and can automatically e-mail a
received fax to a designated user and automatically print a received fax.

Changes: Provides for the automatic updating of the fax lists when a fax
is received or sent. Provides for the received fax list to show the number
of new faxes received since the program was last started. Updates the
Russian translation. Various bugfixes.

  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 04:48

Other/Nonlisted Topic
Utilities

About: gdivelog is a SCUBA dive logging application for GNOME. It has a
few additional features not found in other dive logging software, such as
the ability to split and merge dives and a tree hierarchy for dive sites.
It has a plugin-based architecture allowing anyone to write a plugin to
download/manipulate a dive computer, import and export data to and from
other dive logs, create reports, or essentially anything you want. The
author has written plugins to download and set the sample interval for
ReefNet's Sensus Pro dive logger, to import existing Sensus Pro Manager
dive logs, to import data from DAN DL7 Level 1 files, and to import data
from Uwatec SmartTrak log books.

Changes: Mainly cosmetic changes were done, but the plugin interface has
also been changed, so plugins will need to be upgraded to the latest
versions. gdivelog-sensuspro-plugin-0.3.1 and
gdivelog-smarttrak-plugin-0.2 were released.

  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 17:12

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Installation/Setup

About: mkCDrec (Make CD-ROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito)
disaster recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or
more CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored
on another disk, NFS/CIFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or
system intrusion, the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can
restore the complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning,
which allows one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk
does not have to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition
layout itself). Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs,
XFS, and JFS filesystems are supported. It can restore disks in Software
RAID and LVM mode. It supports the One Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR)
mode, which simulates a bootable CD-ROM on tape.

Changes: Support for the Fedora Core 4 distribution has been added, and
the SPARC/Linux code has been completely updated. This release uses the
new BusyBox 1.01 code, and many critical bugs were fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: MUSCLE (Multi User Server Client Linking Environment) is an N-way
messaging server and networking API. It includes client-side networking
APIs for various languages, including C, C++, C#, Delphi, Java, and
Python. MUSCLE lets programs communicate over a network via streams of
serialized Message objects. The included server program ("muscled") lets
its clients message each other and store information in its server-side
hierarchical database. The database supports flexible queries via
hierarchical wildcarding, and "live" updates via a subscription mechanism.

Changes: The Java client API now support zlib-compressed streams. A handle
leak in the Win32 implementation of the Thread class was fixed. Connect()
now takes an optional timeout parameter. ParseFile() can now parse
hierarchical sub-sections. Several other minor fixes and improvements were

About: Philip's Music Writer is a program for typesetting music. It reads
text files as input, and generates PostScript as output. It can also write
simple MIDI files for proofhearing purposes. PMW is written in C and is
freestanding; that is, it does not require additional processing software.
It is a Linux/Unix port of a program that has run for over a decade on
Acorn systems, where it was known as Philip's Music Scribe.

Changes: Text strings are now interpreted as UTF-8 encoded Unicode
character strings. This makes it possible to give access to all available
characters in the PostScript text fonts while retaining backwards
compatibility for most input files. New escape sequences have been added
for the additional accented letters that are now available. The manual has
a list of all the available characters and their Unicode code points.

[079] - SchemaSpy 1.6.0
  by John Currier (http://freshmeat.net/users/johncurrier/)
  Sun, Sep 11th 2005 20:39

About: SchemaSpy is a Java-based tool that analyzes the metadata of a
schema in a database and generates a visual representation of it in a
browser-displayable format. It lets you click through the hierarchy of
database tables via child and parent table relationships. Browsing through
relationships can occur though HTML links and/or though the graphical
representation of the relationships. It's also designed to help resolve
the obtuse errors that a database sometimes gives related to failures due
to constraints.

Changes: This release displays graphical relationships using Information
Engineering (IE) notation. This should make it easier to understand the
different types of relationships in the schema. The code that detects if
dot is being executed correctly has been improved. Some users were getting
output that implied that dot was working, but no images were created.
Version information has been added to .dot files to help debugging.

About: Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two
independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file,
pipe, device (terminal or modem, etc.), socket (Unix, IP4, IP6 - raw, UDP,
TCP), a client for SOCKS4, proxy CONNECT, or SSL, etc. It provides forking,
logging, and dumping, different modes for interprocess communication, and
many more options. It can be used, for example, as a TCP relay (one-shot
or daemon), as a daemon-based socksifier, as a shell interface to Unix
sockets, as an IP6 relay, for redirecting TCP-oriented programs to a
serial line, or to establish a relatively secure environment (su and

About: Textbased MSN Client is an MSN client with an ncurses interface. It
is currently being developed on a BSD platform, and should support most of
the Unix/BSD/Linux distributions. It requires OpenSSL to be installed.

Changes: Pressing F6 now closes the current window. Three power commands
(whoami, export conlist, and import conlist) have been added. An option
has been added to tmsnc.conf for making the cursor follow the marker.
Translations for French and Portuguese have been added. An input field has
been added to the console for commands. A segfault that occurred when you
resized the terminal, a bug that caused tmsnc to freeze when closing a
window, some bugs in the URL decoding routine, and a format string

About: TunaPie is a directory browser for internet radio and TV streams.

launch your audio player (xmms) or NSV viewer (mplayer) of choice. It also
allows recording of audio and video streams using streamripper.

Changes: The code from the stable branch was updated so that it works with
the current stable wxPython release (2.6). The policy for updating a
listing was changed so that TV and radio lists are refreshed once at
startup.
