[004] - Asterisk-Java 0.2-rc1
  by Stefan Reuter (http://freshmeat.net/users/stefanreuter/)
  Wed, Aug 31st 2005 00:05

Communications :: Telephony
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Asterisk-Java provides a set of Java classes that allow you to
easily build Java applications that interact with an Asterisk PBX Server.
It supports the FastAGI protocol and the Manager API.

Changes: This release candidate focuses on the new features of Asterisk
1.2-beta1, though it still supports Asterisk 1.0.x. The new Actions,
Events, and Commands of Asterisk 1.2 are supported. Support for event
generating Actions (i.e. Actions that send their result as a series of
Events rather than the usual ManagerResults) was implemented. A new base
class was added for AGI scripts, allowing you to write cleaner AGI scripts
since you don't have to pass the channel variable to all methods. New
convenience constructors for manager actions were added.

Database
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Database :: Front-Ends

About: libdbi implements a database-independent abstraction layer in C,
similar to the DBI/DBD layer in Perl. Writing one generic set of code,
programmers can leverage the power of multiple databases and multiple
simultaneous database connections by using this framework. The plugin
architecture allows for new database drivers to be easily added by a
third party with flexible licensing.

Changes: The internals were thoroughly revised to remove signedness and
silent (on i386) type mismatches in an attempt to improve portability
beyond the mainstream Linux and BSD systems, including 64bit platforms.
Support for connection character encodings and for quoting binary strings
was added. The documentation was updated. Native Win32 builds using Mingw
are now supported in addition to the Cygwin port.

Documentation
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: ESP (Ethics Search Protocol) is an XML-based protocol for search
engines that is designed to allow people to express specific ethical
requirements when performing searches. Consumers seldom get the chance to
communicate ethical requirements because the proper communication channel
does not exist. This project has the goal to offer an open source
specification and implementation for that missing communication channel.

Changes: This release introduces namespace references. Many static
categorizations have been turned into namespace references with freely
definable namespaces. Many new types have been added for the

[017] - EverCrack 1.0.7
  by Dr MindHacker (http://freshmeat.net/users/darklogic/)
  Wed, Aug 31st 2005 14:33

Security :: Cryptography

About: EverCrack is a cryptanalysis engine. The overall design goal is to
systematically break down complex ciphers into their simplex components
for cryptanalysis (by the kernel). The kernel consists of an algebraic
design (comparison and reduction) for breaking uniliteral, monoalphabetic
ciphers instantaneously. Currently, it can break a 2500-word cipher in
less than 500 milliseconds. EverCrack currently has multi-language support
for the user interface and cracking encryption in other language
dictionaries (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Dutch,
and Portuguese).

Changes: Changes include greater stability, an improved engine for
exhausting all possible avenues for cracking a cipher, and greater
adaption to Unix principles of programming style. A verbose option has
been added for including ciphertext, time to decode, number of decodes,
etc. in output versus just the raw decodes for piping/redirecting.

About: flac2mp3 is a Perl script to convert FLAC files to MP3 format. It
will process an entire directory tree and put the MP3 files in a similar
structure. Tags are converted where possible. It will only process a file
if the flac file is newer than the MP3 file or if the tags have changed.
If just the tags have changed then just the tags are processed, i.e. the
file does not have to be transcoded again. flac2mp3 comes bundled with all
the non-standard Perl modules required to run. It has been tested on Fedora
Core 4 with Perl v5.8.6 and on Windows XP with ActiveState Perl v5.8.7.

Scientific/Engineering

About: JGraph is a free, mature, and robust Java Graphing framework that
fully complies with Swing design principles. It contains all the graph
visualization and interaction functionality you might expect in a graph
library, including multiple views, layering, zoom, drag and drop, undo,
automatic expanding and collapsing, routing, and layouts. You can create
stunning workflow editors, call graphs, CAD tools, network diagrams,
database visualization tools, and more. It can also be deployed on the
server-side with a large range of image exporting functionality. It is
fully documented and commercially supported.

Changes: The routing interface has changed so that the routing methods now
return a list of points instead of accepting a list of points as a
parameter. The routing of loops has been separated from the non-loop
implementation for the default case so that it is easier to create a new
routing implementation and inherit the default loop routing algorithm.
Children cells moved as part of a collapsed group now are moved when the
parent cell is, if required, using the movesChildrenOnExpand flag.

providing quick searches and playback of MP3s that are split up into
categories. While not intended to be a standalone desktop MP3 player,
others in a similar situation may find it useful.

Changes: A bug has been fixed where attempting to use the online version
checked when your Internet connection was down would cause Mr. Voice to
fail to start. A long-standing bug where searching for a string with an
apostrophe in it would cause an error has been fixed. A bug where adding a

About: runit is a daemontools alike replacement for SysV-init and other
init schemes. It currently runs on GNU/Linux, *BSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris,
and can easily be adapted to other Unix operating systems. runit implements
a simple three-stage concept. Stage 1 performs the system's one-time

Changes: When told to start or restart services, the sv program now
utilizes the ./check script, optionally provided in the service directory,

System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based

About: Franki and Earlgrey Linux are small but usable Linux distributions
designed to demonstrate the full extent of STUBS, the Toolchain and
Utility Build Suite. STUBS is a set of configuration files and scripts
designed to build (and optionally employ) toolchains from just a list of
desired packages, and has scripts capable of downloading sources as
necessary beforehand. It is designed to both bootstrap and work within the
Franki Linux environment, requiring just kernel headers and working
make/gcc/binutils to do so.

Changes: This is a (cleaned-up) reissue of the latest stable
configurations, with the missing FAQ returned and some minor updates made.
Build script updates include those for ascii, automake, dropbear,
findutils, grub, nail, sipsak, syslinux version 3 (Franki/Earlgrey
v0.7.2-2), and zlib.

[062] - Supybot 0.83.0
  by jamessan (http://freshmeat.net/users/jamessan/)
  Wed, Aug 31st 2005 05:34

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and Relay. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers alike
feel at home in the framework.

Changes: The plugin format was changed to a directory-based style. Plugins
can now contain nested plugins. SSL support was added when using the
Twisted driver. Support for connecting to IRCds which require an early
CTCP version response was improved. A number of bugs were fixed in various
plugins.

[064] - Systems of Ordinary Differential Equations 17
  by Dennis Darland (http://freshmeat.net/users/djdarland/)
  Wed, Aug 31st 2005 10:50

About: SODE uses long Taylor series to solve systems of ordinary
differential equations. It generates code to solve the equations in either
Icon (or Unicon) or Maple. Using the Taylor series, estimates are made of
the location and order of poles. An effort is made to adjust H to control
the error. It has worked well in testing, but needs more testing as there
are so many possibilities.

Changes: Problems have been fixed with higher order equations and with
diff operator on the right hand side of the equation.

About: fish, the friendly interactive shell is a shell that is focused on
interactive use, discoverability, and user friendliness. The design goal
of fish is to give the user a rich set of powerful features in a way that
is easy to discover, remember, and use. fish features a user-friendly and
powerful tab-completion, including descriptions of every completion,
tab-completion of strings with wildcards, and many completions for
specific commands. It also features an extensive and discoverable help
system. A special help command gives access to all the fish documentation
in your preferred Web browser. Other features include syntax highlighting
with extensive error checking, support for the X clipboard, smart terminal
handling based on terminfo, an easy to search, no duplicates history.

Changes: This is a bugfix release. Prompt flickering due to exessive
redrawing has been removed. The fish_subshell environment variable was set
when it shouldn't be, which broke the directory history feature. A signal
handling bug, which was causing the "script" command to hang, was found
and fixed. "make test" no longer hangs.

[069] - uni2ascii 2.0
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Wed, Aug 31st 2005 22:57

Software Development
Text Processing :: General
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: uni2ascii converts UTF-8 Unicode to any of a variety of 7-bit ASCII
equivalents: hexadecimal and decimal HTML numeric character entities,
\u-escapes, standard hexadecimal, and raw hexadecimal. Such ASCII
equivalents are useful when including Unicode text in program source, when
entering text into Web programs that can handle the Unicode character set
but are not 8-bit safe, and when debugging.

Changes: This version replaces the original Python program, which
generated only hexadecimal HTML, with a C program that generates four
additional major types of output with a further eight variants for each.
The new program is 20 times faster, has better error-reporting, and is not
restricted to the BMP. The original Python program is included for those
who want it, as is a Python program that converts text containing
Python/Tcl style \u-escapes to Unicode.
