[001] - ADODB 4.52
  by John Lim (http://freshmeat.net/users/jlim/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 06:25

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries

About: ADODB is a set of advanced PHP database abstraction classes. It
supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Interbase/Firebird, Informix, Sybase SQL
Anywhere, Oracle, MS SQL 7 and 2000, SAP DB, Sybase, DB2, FrontBase,
Foxpro, Access, Netezza, LDAP, ODBTP, ADO, and generic ODBC. A metatype
system is built in, making it possible to figure out that types such as
CHAR, TEXT, and STRING are equivalent in different databases. It also
features portable database creation, database-backed session support (with
encryption), SQL performance monitoring, and database health checks.

Changes: New $ADODB_FORCE_TYPE support was added in
GetUpdateSQL/GetInsertSQL. Bugfixes were made in Replace().
ADODB_ASSOC_CASE support was added to the postgres/postgres7 driver.
DECLARE stmt support for oci8 was added.

[002] - Aewan 0.9.2
  by Bruno T. C. de Oliveira (http://freshmeat.net/users/btco/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 21:42

About: Aewan is a curses-based program that allows for the creation and
editing of ASCII art. The user is able to move the cursor around the
screen by means of the arrow keys and "paint" characters by pressing the
corresponding keys. There are dialog boxes that allow the user to choose
foreground and background colors, as well as bold and blink attributes.
The user may also select rectangular areas of the canvas in order to move,
copy, and paste them. Aewan also supports "intelligent" horizontal and
vertical flipping (e.g., it converts "\" to "/", etc). What sets Aewan
apart from similar projects is the fact that it can work with multiple
layers and has the ability to turn transparency and visibility on and off
for each layer. A layer dialog is provided through which the user can
change the order of the layers. Thus, each layer can be edited
independently in order to generate a composite drawing. Instead of using
the layers for compositing, it is also possible to use the layers as
frames for an animation, thus enabling the user to create ASCII
animations. The file format is easy to parse, so it is easy to write a
terminal-based application that uses the Aewan files to display onscreen.
Aewan has been tested on the Linux terminal, rxvt, xterm, and the FreeBSD
console.

Changes: This version features code cleanups, style enhancements, and
fixes for minor bugs/typos. It now uses stdbool instead of the home-grown
ubool type.

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: AfterStep is a Window Manager for X which started by emulating the
NeXTSTEP look and feel, but which has been significantly altered according
to the requests of various users. Many adepts will tell you that NeXTSTEP
is not only the most visually pleasant interface, but also one of the most
functional and intuitive out there. AfterStep aims to incorporate the
advantages of the NeXTSTEP interface, and add additional useful features.

Changes: Memory use optimization, outlined text, alpha order sorting of
window list, wharf animation and focusing, and many bugfixes.

[004] - aircrack 1.2
  by Christophe Devine (http://freshmeat.net/users/devine10/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 11:41

Security

About: aircrack is an 802.11 WEP cracking program that can recover a
40-bit or 104-bit WEP key once enough encrypted packets have been
gathered. It implements the standard FMS attack along with some
optimizations, thus making the attack much faster compared to other WEP
cracking tools.

Changes: This release introduces a whole new set of cryptographic attacks
that make it possible to crack a 104-bit WEP key with as few as 200k
unique IVs, whereas other tools such as AirSnort require more than 2
million unique IVs.

About: AQtime is an integrated performance and memory/resource
optimization toolset aimed at applications running on the Linux platform.
It can be used to discover application bottlenecks, memory leaks,
resource-hogging code, or untested algorithms in any software projects.
It then informs you which module, class, routine or line of code is
causing the problem, and lets you quickly fix it. It can profile any
executable that has the Executable and Linking Format (ELF) and the stabs
format of the debug information.

[007] - ASCIIMathML 1.4.1
  by Peter Jipsen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jipsen/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 15:31

Education
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: ASCIIMathML is a script that converts calculator-style ASCII math
notation (and many LaTeX formulas) to Presentation MathML while your Web
page loads. It works with HTML and XHTML files in Mozilla/Firefox/Netscape
7+ browsers, as well as in Internet Explorer 6 with MathPlayer. For
example, the solutions for the equation 'ax^2+bx+c=0' are expressed in the
HTML file as '(-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)', and display as nicely
formatted MathML. The script can be easily used in wikiservers and blogs,
as a rudimentary MathML editor (with instant preview), and to preview math
formulas as they are typed into a Web page input area.

Changes: This release makes it easy to put mathematical notation on Web
pages by translating standard math syntax into MathML while the Web page
loads. If a browser is not (yet) able to display MathML, this version puts
a note at the top of any Web page using the ASCIIMathML.js script. The note
indicates how to view pages with MathML. Minor updates to the
ASCIIMathML.js file include fixing a bug and adding the stackrel command.

has support for wildcard match coloring, tokenized coloring,
headers/footers, case scenario coloring, command-line- dependent
definition coloring, and includes over 50 pre- made definition files.

Changes: A bug with defaulting the color when the color wrapper is piped
has been fixed. The "limit" definition instruction has been added to limit
the amount of text printed per line. fstab@ and group@ pre-made definition

  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 08:14

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Fileids are now stored and transmitted in binary rather than
encoded. Multiple versions of packages/troves installed at the same time
are now handled much better. Improvements were made in missing file
handling. Recipe inheritance is now possible between repositories.
Interrupted builds were enhanced. The dynamic tag protocol was slightly
modified. Arch.x86.amd64 and Arch.x86.em64t were added. Several bugs were
fixed.

Kylix, based on Turbo Pascal Lex and Yacc version 4.1. The primary goal
is to clean up the code, and improve compatibility and maintainability.
The project started because the original Turbo Pascal Lex and Yacc did
not compile well in Delphi 5+ or Kylix, the sourcecode was messy, and the
last release or activity dates back to early 2000.

Changes: Support for "%union" was added, a command line option to output
files read-only was added, support for increased debug output was added,
and numerous formatting and styling fixes were made.

  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 09:02

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: graphviz is a set of graph drawing tools and libraries. It supports
hierarchical and mass-spring drawings; although the tools are scalable,
their emphasis is on making very good drawings of reasonably-sized graphs.
Package components include batch layout filters and interactive editors for
X11, Java, and a TCL/tk extension. The batch filters can be configured as a
web visualization service (using GIF and click-maps). A generic ActiveX
client-server component is a recent addition to this package. Typical
applications include display of finite state machines, software diagrams,
database schemas, and communication networks. This package contains the
layout commands dot, neato, and twopi, the interactive tools lefty, dotty,
lneato, tcldot, and gpr, and the graph stream processors gpr, ccomps,
colorize, gc, nop, prune, sccmap, tred, and unflatten. The Java graph
display client is named Grappa and is available as a separate package.

Changes: A problem in which bitmaps sometimes were exported as text files,
a slowdown in non-Quicktime formats for v14, and a problem in which
relative shapefiles did not resolve through the GUI were fixed. The
viewport debug messages and non-functioning pages menu were removed.
Integration with external editors was improved. The download size was
reduced. This release tracks the main build of 12 August.

Changes: This release brings a complete rewrite of the database layer, now
using transactions and precompiled queries resulting in faster database
operations. The acoustic analyzer was reimplemented as a standalone
application, allowing one to batch-scan the entire collection and benefit
from acoustic correlations immediately. The accuracy and reliability of
BPM correlations was improved considerably. IMMS is now back to being a

  by f0rked (http://freshmeat.net/users/f0rked/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 01:13

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: IQ is an intelligent IRC robot framework. It is modular, and can
dynamically load and unload modules. Writing modules for the bot is
simple, and any PHP developer should be able to write his or her own
modules to have the bot act as needed. IQ modules utilize a binding system
(modeled after that used by eggdrop) which creates triggers that can be
executed upon any regular event (msg, join, kick, nick, quit, part, etc.),
as well as other bot-specific events (idle, connect, disconnect), and call
a lambda-style function in the module to perform the desired action.
Several official modules are included: weather, Google searching,
gametiger.net searching, DNS, acronym finder, and an intelligent
auto-oping module.

Changes: This release adds more IRC-related methods, more numeric
support, an RSS feed announcer module, and more public commands to the IQ
module. Minor code cleanups and command trigger issues were also
addressed.

[054] - LOAF 0.03
  by Sir Logic (http://freshmeat.net/users/danwillett/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 19:49

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: LOAF (List Of All Friends) is an extension to email that lets you
send out address book data without compromising your privacy. It appends
a hash-like data structure to each outgoing email, and collects similar
attachments from the people who write to you. These files can be queried
to see if they contain a given email address, but they can't be
reverse-engineered to reveal the list of addresses used to construct
them. LOAF lets you check whether someone emailing you for the first
time is a complete stranger, or appears in the address books of some of
your trusted correspondents. And as a decentralized application, it
offers an interesting alternative to current social networking sites like
 Orkut or Friendster.

About: Mail Avenger is a highly-configurable, MTA-independent SMTP
server. It allows you to reject spam during mail transactions, before
spooling messages in your local mail queue. You can specify site-wide
default policies for filtering mail, but individual users can also craft
their own policies by creating avenger scripts in their home directories.
It includes many features not supported by other SMTP servers, including
mail-bomb protection, integration with kernel firewalls, TCP SYN
fingerprint and network route recording, SMTP-level analysis of client
implementations, SMTP callbacks to verify sender addresses, per-user mail
scripts that run during SMTP transactions, virtual domain to user mapping
for the purposes of filtering, SPF (sender policy framework), dynamic SPF
query construction in mail filter scripts, support for easily issuing
multiple concurrent, asynchronous DNS and SPF queries from filter
scripts, and the ability to run spam filters such as spamassassin on
message bodies before replying to SMTP DATA commands.

  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 15:30

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: The MCL (Markov Cluster Algorithm) is a fast and scalable cluster
algorithm for graphs based on stochastic flow. The flow process employed
by the algorithm is mathematically sound and intrinsically tied to cluster
structure in graphs, which is revealed as the imprint left by the process.
The threaded implementation has handled graphs of up to one million nodes
within hours, and is widely used in the field of protein family analysis.
It comes with a wide range of sibling utilities for handling and analyzing
graphs, matrices, and clusterings.

Changes: A facility for retrieving connected components was added in the
form of clmclose. GNU-style option parsing was added to mcl, and mcxsubs,
for extracting subgraphs and submatrices, was sped up considerably. The
code was audited on 64-bit compatibility and saw some general cleansing.
Mcl's postprocessing analysis modes were refined.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 17, which contains 6,839 foods and
128 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

[072] - PHP Layers Menu 3.2.0-rc (Development)
  by Marco Pratesi (http://freshmeat.net/users/pratesi/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 07:10

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: PHP Layers Menu is a hierarchical DHTML menu system that relies on
the PHP scripting engine for the processing of data items. It achieves a
compact layout and a compact output code for menus with a large number of
entries. It provides horizontal and vertical layers-based menus whose
behavior is analogous to menus of commonly used GUI-based applications. It
also provides JavaScript-based tree menus, whose look is analogous to the
most widely used file managers and bookmark handling tools. Menus are
generated using data retrieved from files, strings, and databases. It
supports Mozilla, Netscape 4, 6, and 7, Konqueror 2.2+/Safari, Opera 5+,
and Internet Explorer 4+. It also provides accessibility solutions for
browsers that do not support JavaScript.

Changes: Successful testing with PHP 5 has been done. Support for SQLite
and PHP5 scripts for importing corresponding dumps have been added. The
browser detection and the see-through workaround have been updated to
account for Konqueror 3.3. The home/demo page and the examples have been
reorganized. The "onclick" patch bundled with version 3.0.0 has been
readded, and a new patch is provided to keep a horizontal menu fixed when
the page scrolls. There are also some minor code improvements.

Security
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: radmind is a suite of Unix command-line tools and a server designed
to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.

Changes: This release fixes several small bugs including storing
applefiles with encoded characters, creating setuid and setgid files in
one pass, and using '-' lines for partial management. lcreate also now
gives percentage done progress, and the server can bind to a specific
address.

[084] - Scout Tracker 0.9
  by JazerNorth (http://freshmeat.net/users/jazernorth/)
  Tue, Aug 17th 2004 06:58

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Religion

About: Scout Tracker tracks Boy Scout advancements towards their Eagle
Scout. Scouts can monitor their camping nights, service hours, and
leadership. Scoutmasters can let the boys know about incomplete
requirements without affecting advancement records. Worksheets created for
the scouts are stored in a database for easy view and hide access. Scouts
can view the progress of all scouts to enable them to find other scouts
who need to work on the same requirement or merit badge. Only leaders and
administrators can change data on the site. The best part is that parents
and scouts can access their information anytime they want without having
to call the Scoutmaster.

Changes: Rank Progress Chart under Leader and Rank Progress Chart Menu
were added. The ability to list counselors for merit badges was created,
which includes counselor maintenance pages. This list is to be used in
conjunction with the list maintained by the Council.

[092] - Tardy 1.12 (Stable)
  by Peter Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/pmiller/)

About: The tardy program is a tar(1) post-processor. It may be used to
manipulate the file headers in tar(5) archive files in various ways.

Changes: The --remove-prefix option has been extended to accept a numeric
argument, giving the count of directories to be removed. A bug has been
fixed in the tardy --reomve-prefix option; it now renames directories
exactly matching the prefix to "." rather than being left unaltered. The
output has been altered slightly to silence a new GNU Tar 1.14 warning.

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The SpamBouncer is a set of procmail instructions that search the
headers and text of your incoming email to see if it meets one or more of
a list of conditions for probable spam. It will then either tag the
suspected spam and return it to your main incoming mailbox, tag the
suspected spam, delete spam from known spam sources, and file suspected
spam in a separate folder, send a simulated MAILER-DAEMON daemon
"bounce", complain to the "upstream providers" of known spammers or spam
sites/domains, etc.

Changes: Minor bugs were fixed, so now more spam can be caught. Regular
houskeeping updates were done (free haven domains, small fry, etc.). Newly
identified spammers were added. (Notably, the "Australian porn mafia" is
now being caught.)

About: iching is a Unix command line I Ching generator. It accepts
questions and generates responses that can be looked up in the I Ching (a
Chinese divination book). It is designed around "spiritual algorithms",
that is, algorithms that make some sort of sense spiritually, not just
programatically.

Changes: The entire hexagram class has been rewritten and a unigram class
has been added, which together give a solid base to expand the divination
engine in several directions. The broken Debug make target has been fixed.
On the user side, the hexagram "graphics" have been improved to indicate
whether or not they are changing, and the software now generates nuclear
hexagrams.

About: wmacpi is a Window Maker battery monitor dockapp for ACPI based
systems. It is based on Timecop's wmacpi code and features a cleaned up
code base, proper support for multiple batteries, support for modern
ACPI kernel versions, and other improvements.

Changes: This release implements the libdockapp port, and a capacity mode
for calculating time remaining (as opposed to the normal current rate
mode). This mode samples the remaining capacity of the battery and notes
the time at which it was sampled, and uses a history of samples to
estimate the rate of drain on the battery. From there it calculates a
value for time remaining. Also, various code cleanups have gone in.
