[001] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 2.1
  by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 20:57

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.

Changes: This release focuses on masterwork items. You may now buy
masterwork weapons, armor, arrows and bolts for your character.

[002] - 4tH compiler 3.4e-pre4 (Development)
  by HanSoft (http://freshmeat.net/users/hansoft/)
  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 03:28

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: 4tH is a Forth compiler with a little difference. Instead of the
standard Forth engine it features a conventional compiler. 4tH is a very
small compiler that can create bytecode, C-embeddable bytecode, standalone
executables, but also works fine as a scripting language. It supports over
85% of the ANS Forth CORE wordset and features conditional compilation,
pipes, files, assertions, forward declarations, recursion, include files,
etc. It comes with an RPN calculator, line editor, compiler, decompiler,
C-source generators, and a virtual machine.

Changes: A security vulnerability in the main program was fixed. The
/HOLD constant was added. COMPARE is now fully ANS-Forth compatible. The
2R@ and UNLOOP words were added to the library, and a 'fractals.4th'
demonstration program was added.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: BFilter is a smart filtering HTTP proxy. It removes ads, webbugs,
and popups. Unlike the majority of similar tools, it doesn't rely on a
list of blocked URLs, but instead parses HTML on the fly, and detects ads
using a set of heuristic rules. BFilter has a built-in JavaScript engine
which detects popups and js-generated ads.

Changes: Several bugs have been fixed, including the build problem with
gcc 3.4, damaging a script when inlining it, and the failure to detect
onmouseover popups. Some minor improvements have also been made.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: The Bioinformatics Benchmark System is an attempt to build a
reasonable testing framework, tests, and data, to enable end users and
vendors to probe the performance of their systems. It is not trying to be
the last word in informatics benchmarking, as there are simply too many
codes, tests, data sets, and databases. The goal is to create a core of
tests that all may download and use to probe specific elements of system
performance. The end goal is to enable a pluggable set of tests, including
the core tests, so that performance data may be gathered.

[015] - BitDefender AntiSpam and AntiVirus for CommuniGate 1.6.0-6
  by BitDefender (http://freshmeat.net/users/linuxdefender/)
  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 06:04

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: BitDefender AntiSpam and AntiVirus for CommuniGate Pro provides
proactive antivirus and antispam protection of message traffic at the
email server level. All messages, both sent and received, are scanned in
real-time for spam and viruses, avoiding possible infections and
preventing anyone from sending an infected message. The AntiSpam
technology (SpamTOX) includes heuristic scanning, WBL, and URL filters,
scanning more than 100 emails/sec. BitDefender claims 100% detection rate
for all viruses in the wild (ITW) through its powerful scanning engines.
It integrates itself into CommuniGate Pro as a filter.

Changes: This version adds an antispam filter with 3 plugins: heuristic
scanning, WBL (Whitelist/Blacklist), and URL filter. An internal Watchdog
(bdmond) was added to watch every request and take the appropriate action
if the scanning daemon fails (restart, ignore, refuse, reject). The
"Forward" feature has been added to duplicate or forward email traffic
(all or only disinfected messages or only virused messages) to a local or
remote mailbox. Customized email disclaimers and virus alerts are now
available in English, German, French, Spanish, Catalan, and Romanian.

  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 12:32

Communications :: Chat
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: blueflops is a two-floppy Linux distribution with a graphical Web
browser (links) and an IRC client (tirc). The kernel has most of the
Ethernet drivers compiled in as modules (including the PCMCIA ones) and
PPP support (for dialup connections). The browser is linked with OpenSSL.
The scripts are all accessible by a setup script and have a nice dialog
frontend.

Changes: Blueflops can now boot from USB floppies (with a UHCI host
controller). The scripts were merged into a big one (/sbin/BF) to save
some space. Also, the configuration saving system was rewritten to use
only a file on the floppy.

  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 18:26

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor

About: Cinelerra is a complete audio and video production environment for
Linux. It replaces Broadcast 2000.

Changes: This release introduces water tight floating point image
processing, the ability to adjust images without having to worry about
which steps take away dynamic range since now, none of the steps do, and
the ability to store floating point images in the new OpenEXR and
floating point TIFF formats. A new compressor algorithm gives tight
limiting to output levels. There is time stretch and reframe for video
work in realtime. The time average allows accumulation. Headroom

[020] - Conary 0.6.6
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 18:34

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: This release features a repository protocol update, changeset
format update, the ability to resume halted local builds, the ability to
easily package build-time tests to run at install time to qualify
new/changed environments, better handling of packaged .pyc/.pyo files,
better shared library handling, improved inline documentation,
optimizations for both space and time, and numerous bugfixes.

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Confstore is a configuration backup utility. It scans a system for
all recognised configuration files and then stores them in a simple
archive. It knows what to scan for by reading a definitions file.
Confstore can also restore configuration from backup archives it has
previously created.

Changes: This version adds support for environment variables, such as
$HOME, in definition files thus greatly expanding what definition files
can cover. Also, a bug in the wildcard system that wouldn't allow you to
restore files that had been originally found using a wildcard entry has
been fixed. When restoring, 'v' now shows both files so you can compare
before you restore. All module options have been moved to cs.conf as
well, meaning that you no longer have to edit the module scripts.
Finally, a few more configsets have been added to the default
locations.def plus a few that others have submitted.

  by Cyberlot (http://freshmeat.net/users/cyberlot/)
  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 00:35

Communications :: Chat

About: Cyber Socket Server is a socket server similar to the Flash
Communications Server that was designed to be used with Flash's XML
socket functions. It includes a base socket class that can easily be
extended and a Flash chat extension for running your own Flash chat
room. It uses PHP streams and should run on PHP5 hosts without any
special modules, and works out of the box.

Changes: This release featured a rewrite using classes, an API interface
for modules, and a skeleton of the chat room functionality.

[024] - dd_rescue recovery tool 0.1
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 12:56

System :: Recovery Tools

About: dd_rescue copies data from one file or block device (hard disk,
cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read
errors. It does not truncate the output file if not asked to. So every
time you run it on the same output file, it tries to fill in the gaps.
The algorithmn will: read the non-damaged part of the disk, skipping the
damaged areas; try to read the damaged areas, splitting them into smaller
pieces and reading the non- damaged pieces, until the hardware block size
is reached; try to read the damaged hardware blocks until the specified
number of retries is reached, or until interrupted by the user.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Echo is a framework for developing object-oriented, event-driven
Web applications in Java. Echo removes the developer from having to think
in terms of "page-based" applications and enables him/her to develop
applications using the conventional object-oriented and event-driven
paradigm for user interface development. Knowledge of HTML, HTTP, and
JavaScript is not required. Tutorials, white papers, and full API
documentation are available.

Changes: Minor performance and memory footprint improvements were made to
the HTML rendering architecture. An issue was fixed where buttons were not
focusable via the TAB key. The EchoInstance is now retrievable via the
static EchoInstance.getEchoInstance() method during the execution of the
pre-destruction life cycle method EchoInstance.doExit(). A bug encountered
when replacing a cell in a Grid at a specific position was fixed.

  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 12:24

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: Cosmetic fix to the output: whitespace is added after the
timestamp when not retrieving a message. MANIFEST.in is included in the
source distribution to assist users in building "built distributions"
from it. A few output messages' levels have changed to make verbose mode
slightly less verbose, and a -- debug switch has been added to get "more
verbose"  behaviour.

Desktop Environment

About: Metisse is an experimental X desktop with some OpenGL capacity. It
consists of a virtual X server called Xwnc, a special version of FVWM, and
a FVWM module FvwmAmetista. Xwnc is a mix of Xvnc and XDarwin. It draws
nothing on your screen; everything is drawn into pixmaps. Similarly to
Xvnc, but with a different protocol, Xwnc can send these pixmaps (and
other information) to a "viewer". FvwmAmetista is such a viewer; it uses
OpenGL for rendering the X desktop into a window of a "regular" 3D
accelerated X server.

Changes: A software cursor was implemented for Mac OSX. The experimental
fvwm-insitu focus/stacking policy styles were enabled. Window resizing
was improved. A crash caused by fvwm icons was fixed. Some configuration

System :: Monitoring

About: monagent is a collection of tools which allows you to monitor
anything by writing scripts in any language you prefer. As long as you
supply the correct output format, the data will be monitored, and you will
get an email or SMS message when a certain threshold exceeds the limits
that you have defined. It consists of a Unix daemon, a monitoring viewer,
and an admin tool for setting thresholds. The viewer and admintool are
written in VB6. An Oracle Database is used for the monitoring schema, and
an Oracle Client installation is needed on every host you want to monitor.

Changes: Data is now read from shared memory and only once from the
database if the agent is started for the very first time. Database
inserts and updates are done only if possible, so the agent continues
monitoring even if no database connection is present (warnings and
alerts are written to /var/adm/monagent.log). Users must now "apply"
changes made using admintool. It is now possible to use either MySQL or
PostgreSQL. An intermediate version is now available for users that do
not have "proc" installed on their machine.

  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 20:52

Security

About: NARC (Netfilter Automatic Rules Configurator) is a free firewalling
package for Netfilter/Iptables, released under the BSD license. It attempts
to simplify the setup of a firewall (stateful packet filter) via the
iptables tools. It is a bash shellscript that generates (hopefully)
sensible and secure rules for Netfilter based on a simple configuration
file. It features quick setup via a simple configuration file, connection
tracking (and fragmentation reassembly), customized logging, probe
detection (TCP & UDP), and much more.

Changes: This release implements IPLIMIT so that it works with 2.4 and
2.6 kernels, implements port forwarding to other interfaces (no longer
limited to DMZ), fixes an error in the install script that omitted a
mkdir, and removes the TCP port 445 (microsoft-ds) from TCP_PROBE.

  Thu, Aug 12th 2004 20:58

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) is a framework and set of services for
supporting system-level performance monitoring and performance management.
It provides a unifying abstraction for all of the interesting performance
data in a system, and allows client applications to easily retrieve and
process any subset of that data using a single API. A client-server
architecture allows multiple clients to monitor the same host, and a
single client to monitor multiple hosts. Archive logging and replay are
integrated so that a client application can use the same API to process
real-time data from a host or historical data from an archive.

Changes: This version features support for 2.6 kernels, many bugfixes,
better FHS compliance, and portability enhancements. Major new features
include new platform agents for Windows (Win98 or later with either
Cygwin or Interix/SFU), AIX 5.2, Darwin (Mac OS X 10.3), and
improvements to the Solaris agent for SunOS 5.8.

About: POPsearch is a personal search engine that is designed to help you
easily find information on your computer. It lets you index your entire
collection of email messages and files, allowing you to search it from any

Relationship Engine for your daily flow of information.

Changes: A major database redesign was done to enhance performance and
scalability for users that index a large amount of data. With this
release, all users will have to delete their databases and index
everything from scratch. The delete_databases script were changed to fix
a recovery message. There are portability changes for FreeBSD. Shutdown
messages are now printed by popbuild. Large source modules were
decomposed. Some time-consuming compiler options were disabled. There are
major documentation changes. The way that word stemming is performed was

(via the XML session file) as well as basic effects, including reverb,
compression, and EQ, and flexible real-time cross fades. The audio engine
is separate from the GUI, which allows for intelligent management of
background tasks and the ability to use separate machines for the
interface and for playback.

Changes: This release includes a number of minor enhancements, as well as
the addition of advanced memory locations, which can be used to recall
playback locations, selections, views, etc.
