The GNOME Desktop Environment is a dynamic, young project and full of
expectations. I regret that mine are somewhat higher, though.

About: ALE is a program that can render high-fidelity images of real
scenes by aligning and combining many similar images from a camera or
scanner. The correct similarity between images is roughly that achieved by
a somewhat unsteady hand holding a camera.

Changes: This release updates the renderer to support a variety of

Desktop Environment
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing
Office/Business

About: AntiRight is a lightweight and scripted desktop environment which
uses the Motif toolkit. Development is carried out with a minimalistic
philosophy in mind. The software consists of a text editor, a desktop
panel, a sticky note utility, system management panels, a file manager, a
calculator interface, a color/background selector, a command launcher, a
simple help system, an email and Web browser launcher, a theme selector, a
preferences utility, and a CD player. The desktop panel consists of a
launcher panel button, a screen lock button, a virtual desktop switcher,
an alarm utility, a command launcher, a clock, a user counter, a load
meter, and a mail checker.

Changes: This release adds better resizing and layout management, a find
and replace feature, better file handling in the text editor, tooltips if
such is available, better defined mnemonics and accelerators, a more
useful information display on the desk bar, and bitmap button support.

Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Argh! is an esoteric programming language in the spirit of Befunge,
Brainfuck, and friends. It is a nice and simple language with two
dimensional code-flow, a combined code/data array, an infinite stack,
regular characters for all instructions, no strange braces or symbols, no
unnecessary arithmetic operators (add and sub are all you need), and
countless other features it doesn't have. The distribution includes
interpreters for Argh! and Aargh! (an extended Argh! that is most likely
Turing complete), the official specification, editing modes for emacs and
vim, and lots of examples.

Changes: The included Argh! Mode for GNU Emacs now features a complete
interactive Aargh! interpreter and debugger.

is implemented in C, and is easier to set up and use, especially for
connections to multiple hosts. Autossh has been compiled and tested on
OpenBSD, Linux, and Solaris, and should run without needing changes on
FreeBSD and NetBSD.

Changes: This release added support for Cygwin, some small enhancements,

  Sat, Aug 7th 2004 00:11

About: The cidentd program is written for people who wish to have a
working ident daemon but who do not necessarily want to allow the the
responses to be truthful. This program can be configured to report the
login name or UID on a per user basis without the need of the sysadmin
recompiling the program or even restarting the daemon. It can also be
used to hide the login name with a literal string, or an error message.

About: dnspython is a DNS toolkit for Python. It supports almost all of
the record types. It can be used for queries, zone transfers, and dynamic

provides both high and low level access to DNS. The high level classes
perform queries for data of a given name, type, and class, and return an
answer set. The low level classes allow direct manipulation of DNS zones,
messages, names, and records.

Changes: This is a maintenance release. The only new functionality is IPv6

About: gmuck assists you in generating valid (X)HTML by examining the
source code that generates it. It is not a replacement for real validation
tools, but is handy for quick checks and in situations where validation of
the actual markup is troublesome. It is a line-oriented tool, so its
structural checking capabilities are limited, but it makes an attempt to
report syntactical errors as well as providing some lint-like features.

Changes: Regular expressions are now pre-generated in order to avoid
HTML::Tagset and Regex::PreSuf runtime dependencies.

About: Generic Security Service (GSS) is an implementation of the Generic
Security Service API (GSSAPI). It is used by network applications to
provide security services, such as authenticating SMTP/IMAP, via the
GSSAPI SASL mechanism. It consists of a library and a manual, and a
Kerberos 5 mechanism that supports mutual authentication and the DES and
3DES ciphers.

About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC
normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional
character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and
XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: Nail is a mail user agent derived from Berkeley Mail 8.1. It is
intended to provide the functionality of the POSIX mailx command with
built-in support for MIME messages, IMAP (including caching and
disconnected operations), POP3, and SMTP. Nail offers its full command set
both for interactive and batch use, and is especially useful for sending
attachments from scripts or for reading mail via slow connections and on
bad terminals. In recent system environments, nail is Unicode/UTF-8
capable.

Changes: IMAP mailboxes can now be cached locally. The cache can also be
used for disconnected operation, i.e. to view and alter IMAP mailbox
contents without an active connection to the IMAP server. Fetching
message headers from IMAP servers has been made faster. The 'newmail'
variable is no longer always active for IMAP mailboxes. The user is now
reliably notified if messages have been expunged on the IMAP server. Some
small fixes were made for the 'account', 'folder', 'inc', and 'newmail'
commands. Nail compiles without OpenSSL out of the box again.

About: xmms-crossfade is an output plugin for XMMS. Its main feature is
automatic crossfading. It also removes the gaps between tracks, to play
whole MP3 albums without any audible interruption. xmms-crossfade supports
OSS via a builtin driver, and any other platform by using existing output
plugins.

Changes: Finally, the bug that could cause a lockup or segfault when using
ALSA as the output plugin has been fixed. The effect handling code has been
updated.

About: XStream is a simple library to serialize objects to XML and back
again. It is easy to use, does not require the definition of mappings, is
fast, and integrates with other XML APIs. It features customizable
conversion stategies.

Changes: This release adds many more converters for common Java types.
Fields of type byte[] are now encoded using Base64. Support for using
XStream in environments where classes are hot-redeployed has improved.
