[026] - INews 0.7
  by andrea ferrandi (http://freshmeat.net/users/aferrandi/)
  Monday, March 8th 2004 13:34

Text Editors :: Word Processors

About: INews is a system to write and publish newspapers on the internet.
INews is different because the newspapers it produces have a traditional
structure, with pages and articles distributed like in a paper newspaper.
A newspaper published with INews is not published using HTML, but can be
read with a Java application. INews is a complete system that includes a
server application, an editor application to write and publish editions of
the newspaper, a reader application to read the last edition of the
newspaper on the Internet, and an administration application.

Changes: This release has a new Reader that uses the SOAP protocol. The
parts have been grouped by categories. Saving and loading of browser
queries has been added. New parameters have been added to the browser
queries. You can print articles from the viewers. There is a new grid
browser, faster image loading, and an improved button bar.

[027] - Java Serialization to XML 2.1.7
  by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
  Monday, March 8th 2004 01:20

Communications
Database
Software Development

About: Java Serialization to XML (JSX) allows you to write and read any
Java object graph as XML data with one line of code. You can verify your
data and manipulate it with standard XML tools like DOM, JDOM, and XSLT.
JSX automatically creates a file format/wire protocol for all Java
objects, so that it is always up to date as the code evolves. When you
need backward compatibility, JSX provides the evolution techniques of Java
Object Serialization, and you can also modify the XML directly. Unlike
databinders, such as JAXB and Castor, no explicit mapping is required, and
JSX works for all objects.

Changes: A minor bug that duplicated the final close tag was fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JSAP (Java Simple Argument Parser) not only syntactically validates
your program's commandline arguments, but it converts those arguments into
objects you specify. There's a pretty big (and growing) list of return
types suppored by JSAP, including Integers, Floats, Dates, URLs, and even
java.awt.Colors; you can also add your own in a matter of minutes.
Cascading configuration files can provide arguments not supplied at the
command line, and a custom ANT task is included to generate a JSAP class
based on your commandline configuration.

  Monday, March 8th 2004 17:52

Utilities

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: One can now bind actions (external programs) to keys which
perform no current function in MultiTail (for example: 'g' starts
/usr/bin/ping). Window sizes are configurable, the user interface is more
consistent, and there are several small fixes.

  Monday, March 8th 2004 01:55

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Some vendors refuses to release specs or even a binary Linux driver
for their WLAN cards. ndiswrapper tries to solve this by making a kernel
module that can load Ndis (Windows network driver API) drivers. The goal
is not to implement all of the Ndis API, but to implement the functions
needed to get cards without Linux drivers to work.

Changes: Integrated RPM packaging, better makefiles, a new, simpler
installation method, better support for multiple driver and cards, and
support for some more kernels. Suspend and resume now follows the new
power management driver model and works with S3/S4. Background AP
scanning was removed as it was affecting IP traffic. WEP key and ESSID

About: Penguin Greetings is a Perl Web-based greeting card application. It
can be run as standard CGI application or persistently via SpeedyCGI. The
package supports any number of independent ecard sites running on the same
server. By using multi-part MIME email, it is intended to make ecards more
like email. The HTML for the cards and the creation screens are embedded
in Embperl templates, making the program completely customizable by Web
developers and permitting server-side processing within templates.
Object-oriented ecard sites can be made using Embperl::Object extensions.
Emailing and database updates are performed by a separate daemon.
Extensive documentation is included, along with 5 demonstration ecard
sites and over 140 cards.

Changes: Pgreet now supports the Embperl::Object which allows for
object-oriented ecard sites to be made from reusable components with
inheritance. Secondary site configuration files are now also cached in
persistent applications. The application daemon has been streamlined,
support has been added for purging old ecards. A new command line
application for routine database management chores has been added. A new
object-oriented demo ecard site has been created. Early ecards have been
replaced with image-based updates. The new and updated cards include items

[057] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 3.3
  by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
  Monday, March 8th 2004 00:10

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into
runnable C code. It allows you to embed actions at any point in your
regular language and to control the non-determinism in the resulting
machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or" operator), kleene
star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some helpers like "!", "?"
and "+". Ragel's finite state machines are closed under all of its
operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular lanuages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.

Changes: Fixes were made for non-x86 architectures.

About: The ruleCore Engine is an event-driven rule engine that manages and
executes reactive rules. The rules are event-condition-action (ECA) style
of rules. The ruleCore Engine provides capabilities for detection of
complex patterns of events, called situations. Events can be combined with
logical and temporal operators in order to describe complex situations.
When a situation is detected, the ruleCore Engine can execute an action to
alert external applications or users of the situation. The ruleCore Engine
is fed with events through connectors. Currently, connector
implementations exists for plain sockets, XML-RPC, IBM WebSphere MQ, and

[059] - S tar 1.5a39 (Development)
  by Jörg Schilling (http://freshmeat.net/users/schily/)
  Monday, March 8th 2004 00:26

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax" and "gnutar" cmdline syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program that hides Linux incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star
package implements all Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any
"rmt" client from any OS to contact any OS as server.

Changes: The handling ot the -p option was changed massively to be closer
to SUSv2 and the historic UNIX tar. A new -no-p option switches off -p
for root. The directory stack now allows delayed permisson setting to
allow extracting read only directories as a non-root user. A minor bug
that caused star to complain about "star rf filename ..." when "filename"
was not an empty file was fixed. By default, cpio now restores all
permission (like star -p).

  Monday, March 8th 2004 19:34

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: SCons is a software construction tool (build tool substitute for
Make) implemented in Python. It features a modular build engine that can
be embedded in other software. SCons configuration files are Python
scripts that call the build engine API. It can scan files to detect
dependencies automatically and maintain a global view of all dependencies
in a build tree, and uses MD5 signatures to detect changed file contents
reliably. Timestamps can be used if you prefer. SCons also supports
parallel builds and is easily extensible through user-defined builder and
 scanner objects.

Changes: Support has been added for Visual Studio 2003, Borland tools, and
the D programming language. Tool specifications may be searched for in a
local "toolpath". Construction variables may now be expanded recursively,
and appending to FLAGS variables is now consistent for strings and lists.
Numerous bugs have been fixed and other miscellaneous enhancements added.
Error messages have been improved. Memory utilization is now more
efficient. The documentation has been updated.

second is a separate administration interface for managing both the
appearance and content of the published service (users and customers,
product information and related files, order information).

Changes: The customer logout element doesn't crash anymore when the first
name and last name questions are missing. Option-dependent item codes now
function properly. The FTP library required by the eLogi integration is
now included. Uploaded product pictures are now copied along with the
product. Customers' statistics are now updated when creating a customer

Windows and Linux workgroup environments.

[087] - ZUUL The Gatekeeper Alpha

About: ZUUL (The Gatekeeper) is intended to operate on a stack of modems.
When an IP packet arrives and the target is known by the phone table, it
connects one of the modems to the resolved phone number. This is done by
pppd and chat. ZUUL leaves most of the configuration with the used
programs. It is partly based on diald, and is especially interesting for
people who need to call a large number of stations (with different phone
numbers) over a modem.
