[006] - beancounter 0.7.2
  by Dirk Eddelbuettel (http://freshmeat.net/users/eddelbuettel/)
  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 08:21

Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Investment

About: beancounter enables stockmarket data analysis and performance
evaluation. It has two main modes. The first is data gathering - both
current data (e.g. closing prices, high, low, volume etc.) and historical
price data can be retrieved efficiently using multiple securities per
requests, and stored in an SQL database (PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite are
supported) via easy command line operations. The second mode is data
analysis, based on the previously stored data. This comprises various
performance reports, as well as a Value-at-Risk analysis. beancounter is
implemented as a Perl module, and a Perl command-line frontend to the
module. It supports different stock markets from around the globe, foreign
exchange rates, US mutual funds, and US options.

Changes: A patch was applied to correct for Yahoo!'s sudden scaling of FX
rates by a factor of 100, which will lead to more precision in
backpopulation. README.non-gnu was updated, and a simplistic Perl
regression test was added.

  by Brian Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/avalon73/)
  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 22:46

Other/Nonlisted Topic

About: CacheNav is a GPS navigation program that was designed
specifically for use with CacheMate, a geocaching database. It receives
and displays real-time information from a connected NMEA-compatible GPS
receiver, or the one built into the Garmin iQue 3600. When launched as a
CacheMate plugin, it provides "goto" navigation functionality. It has no
waypoint database of its own, but relies on CacheMate.

[009] - CDfs 2.6.3
  by Michiel Ronsse (http://freshmeat.net/users/ronsse/)
  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 13:11

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
System :: Filesystems

About: CDfs is a file system for Linux systems that `exports' all tracks
and boot images on a CD as normal files. These files can then be mounted
(e.g. for ISO and boot images), copied, played (audio tracks), etc. The
primary goal for developing this file system was to `unlock' information
in old ISO sessions. The file system also allows you to access data on
faulty multi session disks, e.g. disks with multiple single sessions
instead of a multi session.

the CWirc client. It can broadcast world news in Morse and Hellschreiber,
RAC ham news, act as a MorseMail to CWirc repeater, be a CW tutor, or send
fortune cookies in Morse, over an IRC channel or through DCC chat, with
adjustable keying speed and Farnsworth spacing. It is easily extendable
with scripts or external programs to provide additional services in Morse.

Changes: The method to set the Farnsworth speed has been changed to the
more common and more intuitive "character speed" and "average speed" pair
of settings.

[015] - dobackup.pl 4.29
  by Ian E. Morgan (http://freshmeat.net/users/imorgan/)
  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 13:08

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: dobackup.pl is a flexible Perl script to handle unattended
incremental backups of multiple servers. It handles multiple media sets
with automatic media preparation and rotation, configurable
'what-to-backup', global per-host exclusion patterns, and user settable
'don't-back-this-up' metafiles. Its design goal is zero-maintenance,
nothing to do except change the media when told.

Changes: The size of the last incremental and full backups are now
tracked, and warnings are included in the email report if there's unlikely
to be enough space on the media for the next backup to complete
successfully. New configuration options are now written to the
configuration file rather than just using assumed defaults. Major
readability cleanup of the code has been done.

[016] - Emdros 1.1.14
  by Ulrik Petersen (http://freshmeat.net/users/ulrikp/)
  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 02:53

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Documentation
Information Management

About: Emdros is a text database engine for annotated or analyzed text. It
is applicable in linguistics, publishing, text processing, and other
fields dealing with annotated text. Emdros has a powerful query language
for asking relevant questions of the data. It is middleware, acting as a
layer between a client (written by the user), and an underlying database.
PostgreSQL and MySQL are supported.

Changes: A few minor bugs were fixed, and two statements were made to run
faster. One bug caused a query to not be executed under certain
circumstances. One bug caused hexadecimal and octal escapes not to work.
One bug was a transaction that was not committed. The two statements GET
FEATURES and SELECT OBJECTS HAVING MONADS IN were made to run faster.

About: File rename utils are robust bash hacks that enable various file
rename actions. These include lower/uppercase/capitalized conversions,
space removal, a KDE-compatible trashcan, and renaming of HTML
file/directory pairs. Documentation is in the form of man pages.

Changes: A function called mv_vfatillegal2underscore for removing
characters not allowed in Windows FAT filenames was added. The handling

  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 07:48

Internet
System :: Networking

About: gwhois is a generic whois client (and server) which strives to know
the right server to query for each and every top level domain and IP
address. You can ask gwhois about a domainor IP address, and it will
automatically forward your query to the appropriate server. gwhois even
queries whois servers which can only be reached by a Web form, and outputs
the results as text. gwhois can be used as a client or can be installed as
a relaying server, so you can use your normal whois client to ask gwhois.

Changes: Code cleanups were done. IDN for DENIC was added. Some netblocks
were added. TLD and IP fixes were made.

  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 19:38

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Gina is a modified version of the Zina MP3 streamer/jukebox. It
takes a collection of MP3s stored in a genre/artist/album/song or
artist/album/song format and creates a full-featured Web interface,
complete with templates and support for internationalization. Its features
include streaming or downloading of MP3/Ogg files or having them played
back on the host itself, full support for artist/album artwork, the
ability to download albums as a Zip file, random playing of songs from
specified genres, "featured" albums on the main page, and playlist
support.

Changes: Support for styles and 4 styles (red, green, grey, blue) were
added. "All albums by artist" randomizes by default. CD-Changer was fixed.

  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 08:48

Communications
Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat

About: Globe*Trotter is a guestmap. It allows Web site visitors to mark
where they live on a map and include their personal comments, instead of
merely tacking their personal regards onto the end of a long list. It
benefits your visitors because they can easily read other's comments and
add their remarks in a fun and novel way. It also benefits you, the
webmaster, because more people will be likely to give you feedback and you
will be able to see where your visitors are. A free hosted version of
Globe*Trotter (with no ads) is available.

Changes: New borders were added. Users now drag and drop icons instead of
clicking on a map. The forum no longer drops down, but rather takes the
form of a speech bubble. Popup information was made into a speech bubble,
and the interface was cleaned up. A new Spanish translation was added. A
new map was created. Eleven new templates were added. There are some
problems in the Spanish translation. The instructions in index.php are
hard-coded in English. The admin.php file currently does nothing.

the OpenStep standard developed by NeXT (now Apple) Inc. The libraries
consist of everything from foundation classes, such as dictionaries and
arrays, to GUI interface classes such as windows, sliders, buttons, etc.

Changes: This version removes the `--disable-import' option. There is now
a README.Darwin for Darwin/MacOSX install. The framework versioning and
naming were clarified. Default string encoding is now taken from system
nl_langinfo if not  set with GNUSTEP_STRING_ENCODING. NSKeyedArchiver/

  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 13:12

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Installation/Setup

About: mkCDrec (Make CD-ROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito)
disaster recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or
more CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored
on another disk, NFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or system
intrusion, the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore
the complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning, which allows
one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have
to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition layout itself).
Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs, XFS, and JFS
filesystems are supported. mkCdrec is also able to restore disks in
Software RAID and LVM mode.

Changes: This release supports cdrecord's new ATAPI mechanism. Important
fixes include better detection of the bootloader and Linux kernel
(especially for SuSE). There is a minor fix in cloning software RAID
disks, and some tweaks for supporting Linux 2.6 kernels and
module-init-tools.

[079] - Runabout 2.0.0
  by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 17:10

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: The Runabout is an extension of the Java libraries that adds
two-argument multi-dispatch to Java without changing the language or the
VM. It uses reflection to find visit methods, which are invoked using
dynamically generated and loaded code. The Runabout does not need a
special compiler or changes to Java's syntax. Dispatch with the Runabout
is fairly fast, typically a factor of two to ten times slower than double
dispatch. With the Runabout Optimizer code, the Runabout can be converted
to use double-dispatch instead of reflection and dynamic loading. The
Runabout is useful since it can help to make code faster and more
readable. For example, a sequence of instanceof tests is a clear sign that
a Runabout should be used instead.

Changes: With this release a new tool, the Runabout Optimizer, is made
available. It statically translates Java applications that use the
Runabout into semantically equivalent applications where the reflective
code of the Runabout is replaced with synthetic, visitor-like dispatching
code. This makes the Runabout applicable in situations where dynamic
loading or reflection are not possible or extraordinarily costly, e.g.
when Java code is compiled ahead of time with gcj. The package name
Runabout was changed to follow Java naming conventions.

for quick storage of selection results for later reuse. This allows really
huge tables to be browsed page-wise without reselecting again and again.

[089] - TellyGuide 4.3.2
  by Richard Lawrence (http://freshmeat.net/users/ralawrence/)
  Wednesday, March 3rd 2004 07:33

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: TellyGuide is a custom channel for offline Web browsers such as
AvantGo, iSilo, or Plucker. It was designed to provide you with detailed
UK television listings for both satellite and terrestrial channels for up
to five days in advance. It is an alternative to the (now defunct) free
version of DigiGuide which gave you only one days listing and no synopsis.
It can give you seven days of listings and full details of the programmes
(when available). It can also let you tag programmes that you like and
flag them to you in the listings or within your own special "my
favourites" view.

Changes: The configuration preferences were moved from the script to
seperate files for easy updating to later versions. Several bugs with
hometime and bedtime settings were fixed. Problems with caching
permissions and formatting of the channels and programme information
(especially when viewing on a PocketPC) were also fixed.
