Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management

About: Animal Shelter Manager is a complete computer solution for animal
sanctuaries, rescue shelters, and veterinary surgery clinics. It features
complete animal and owner management, document generation, flexible
reporting, charts, Internet Web site publishing, and more.

Changes: This version now has native interfaces under Linux/GTK2 and
Windows, uses about 1/20th the memory it did previously, and feels much
more responsive. A few bugs were fixed (shortcut accelerator keys, button
mnemonics,  etc.).

  by Richard Bos (http://freshmeat.net/users/rjmbos/)
  Tuesday, December 30th 2003 13:23

System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution

About: The superb Debian package installer APT has since some time become
available for RPM-based distributions. However, to install RPM packages
with apt, an apt repository is needed. apt4rpm creates the apt repository
from an RPM repository. The rpm repository can be located locally or
remotely. Once the apt repository has been created with apt4rpm, the apt
tools can be used to install RPMs.

Changes: A grep construction has been altered to work around a bug in
grep. An additional directory tag to further customize the repository
directory has been added to the configuration file.The Perl script
aptate-config has been converted into a Perl module (Aptate::Config).
Documentation has been converted from SGML to XML Docbook 4. The
documentation is now processed with xmlto. The build machinery has been
improved.

[010] - convmv 1.07
  by Björn Jacke (http://freshmeat.net/users/bjoernjacke/)
  Tuesday, December 30th 2003 07:57

About: convmv converts filenames (not file content), directories, and
even whole filesystems to a different encoding. This comes in very handy
if, for example, one switches from an 8-bit locale to an UTF-8 locale. It
 has some smart features: it automagically recognises if a file is
already UTF-8 encoded (thus partly converted filesystems can be fully
moved to UTF-8) and it also takes care of symlinks. Additionally, it is
able to convert from normalization form C (UTF-8 NFC) to NFD and
vice-versa. This is important for interoperability with Mac OS X, for
example, which uses NFD, while Linux and most other Unixes use NFC. Though
it's primary written to convert from/to UTF-8 it can also be used with
almost any other charset encoding. Note that this is a command line tool
which requires at least Perl version 5.8.0.

Changes: This release adds an option to undo ugly URL escape sequences
(such as %20), a lower/uppercase conversion, and a check for characters
which are invalid for filenames in a POSIX filesystem.

  by Tristan Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/psychonaut/)
  Tuesday, December 30th 2003 17:02

Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Pre-processors

About: GPP is a general-purpose preprocessor with customizable syntax,
suitable for a wide range of preprocessing tasks. Its independence from
any programming language makes it much more versatile than cpp, while its
syntax is lighter and more flexible than that of m4. The syntax is fully
customizable, which makes it possible to process text files, HTML, or
source code equally efficiently in a variety of languages.

Changes: This release improves cross-platform compatibility, and fixes a
bug which caused gpp to crash when the same macro was defined twice on
the command line. It now issues a warning on the use of deprecated
command-line options. Installation instructions were added for Windows,
Unix, and other systems. It is now packaged in a manner similar to most
GNU programs, including a "configure" configuration/installation script
suitable for Unix-like systems. There are minor changes (mostly
typographical)  to the manual.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so

  by Jorge Windmeisser Oliver (http://freshmeat.net/users/JorgeWO/)
  Tuesday, December 30th 2003 09:05

About: Kisdnmonitor is a KDE applet for isdnserver. It monitors the
B-Channels of your ISDN cards, shows each incoming/outgoing call in a
popup window, calls while the user was absent and logged out (the PC has
still to be powered on), the duration of a call, the costs of outgoing
calls, and a list of all calls with editing and find options. It allows
printing the list in the row order and sorting order you set up. Totals
are calculated (time, duration, and costs). It is linked to kaddressbook
(edit amd insert). It shows email addresse(s) of the caller in the context
menu (if available), and statistics to graphically view the data. You can
configure the main window toolbars.

Changes: Voice box (answering machine) functionality was added, and
requires isdnserver 0.7. The code was cleaned up. Some major bugfixes wer
made.

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
Software Development :: Localization

About: libintl-perl is a library that supports message translation for
Perl, written in pure Perl (version 5.004 or better). A faster C version
is also built and installed if the system fulfills all requirements. Its
interface is very similar to the gettext family of functions in C, and it
uses the same file formats as GNU gettext, making it possible to use all
tools available for gettext itself and to seamlessly integrate
internationalized Perl code into mixed-language projects. An alternative
library with a similar purpose is available as Locale::MakeText.

Changes: Only the matching shared library version is loaded. The user
supplied locale name is now used when guessing output character set.
Corrections were made for Atari-ST character maps.

[031] - Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator 3.1 (Flash)
  by astormchaser (http://freshmeat.net/users/astormchaser/)
  Tuesday, December 30th 2003 03:50

System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It can be configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa,
IMAP, and POP. It also comes with denial of service protection and a
special reservation system for voice and video traffic QOS.

Changes: This version adds turn key QOS support for the Avaya, Siemens,
and Nortel IP PBX phone systems. It now allows you to plug into a network
link that shares data and voice with these VOIP systems and provide
priority service for the voice traffic. It also allows you to reserve
bandwidth for voice with only one unit on the link.

It supports both prototypes and classes. In addition, it supports
component-based programming through category-based composition.

Changes: The ^^/1 operator was made right-associative for consistency with
the remaining operator declarations. The BIBLIOGRAPHY file was added,
containing a list of Logtalk publications in BibTeX format. A font-lock
file for Emacs was added, providing syntax coloring for editing Logtalk
source files. An implementation of the Smalltalk dependent mechanism was
added to the standard Logtalk library. The config file was updated for
ECLiPSe 5.4~5.7 with missing ISO Prolog predicate definitions. The manual
pages were updated to comply with XHTML 1.0 Strict and to provide better

About: NeoStats provides unique services to IRC via loadable modules. It
does not provide the traditional NickServ/ChanServ services, but instead
provides services like "HostServ", which can automatically set a user's
virtual host upon logging onto a IRC network, or "StatServ", which can
provide detailed statistics about the network, individual servers, or
channels, and produce an HTML page. It also includes a number of "Fun"
services, like "LoveServ" and "MoraleServ". Additional modules are
available via the NeoStats Web site or through third party developers.
Currently, NeoStats supports UnrealIRCd, UltimateIRCD, Hybrid7, Bahamut,
MysticIRCd, QuantumIRCd, LiquidIRCd, and NeoIRCd, with more IRCD support
being developed.

Changes: NeoStats can now emulate a PostgreSQL database server, so
software such as PHP/Perl can query for IRC related information directly
from NeoStats without the use of an external database server. Module Bots
now use an integrated Bot Message and Set functions that provide a uniform
interface to users. Libcurl was integrated to improve HTTP/FTP support.

System
Utilities

About: tmv is a more powerful alternative to the GNU fileutils "rename".
It renames files/directories using regular expressions (allowing to
specify an arbitrary sed script). It optionally converts pathnames to
upper/lowercase, from/to a specified character set, or even pipes them
through arbitrary commands. Finally, pathnames can be manually edited in
your favorite text editor.

Changes: An option which enables you to manually edit the pathnames being
renamed has been added.

[061] - WindowLab 1.20
  by Nick Gravgaard (http://freshmeat.net/users/nickgravgaard/)

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: WindowLab is a small and simple window manager of novel design. It
is click-to-focus, shares its window depth policy with the Amiga, and has
a window resizing/reshaping method similar to that of 8-1/2 from Plan 9.
It maintains the illusion of direct manipulation by constraining the mouse
pointer when appropriate (i.e., when a window cannot be dragged any
further in one direction). The pointer is also constrained vertically
(effectively making the target menu items infinitely tall according to
Fitts's law) when it is in the menubar to reduce pointing time.

Changes: The button graphics were altered, the default active window
colour was changed, and the borderwidth command line option was removed.
Fullscreen mode now respects window size increment hints as well as
maximum size hints, and clicking the right mouse button between clicking
the resize button and starting the window drag now cancels resize mode.

[063] - Womcat Bookmarks 2.6.5
  by Philip Dorrell (http://freshmeat.net/users/womcat/)
  Tuesday, December 30th 2003 22:11

Communications

About: Womcat Bookmarks is a program that maintains Web bookmarks in a set
of hierarchical folders. It can output the bookmarks as an HTML page and
as an RSS 2.0 file that can be placed on a Web site. The RSS file maps
folder names into the "category" element. It can download other RSS files,
treating them as categorized bookmarks to create a local database of Web
bookmarks that can be browsed by subject. It supports RSS discovery by
allowing posting RSS file URLs as new items. It also acts as a basic RSS
feed reader. It also includes a Weak Subscriptions feature, which is a bit
like a personalized version of BlogDex.

Changes: This version adds the generation of a separate Web page listing
the user's Weak Subscriptions, in the spirit of a blog roll.
