Debian: New rsync packages fix unauthorised remote code execution
by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
Section: Security
Thursday, December 4th 2003 08:23

The rsync team has received evidence that a vulnerability in all versions
of rsync prior to 2.5.7, a fast remote file copy program, was recently
used in combination with a Linux kernel vulnerability to compromise the
security of a public rsync server. While this heap overflow vulnerability
could not be used by itself to obtain root access on an rsync server, it
could be used in combination with the recently announced do_brk()
vulnerability in the Linux kernel to produce a full remote compromise.
Fixed packages are available from security.debian.org.

SuSE: New kernel packages fix local root exploit
by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
Section: Security
Thursday, December 4th 2003 07:45

This security update fixes a serious vulnerability in the Linux kernel. A
missing bounds check in the brk() system call allowed processes to request
memory beyond the maximum size allowed for tasks, causing kernel memory to
be mapped into the process' address space. This allowed local attackers to
obtain super user privileges. An exploit for this vulnerability is
circulating in the wild, and has been used to compromise OpenSource
development servers. Fixed packages are available from ftp.suse.com.

[001] - Active port forwarder 0.5.1
  by jeremian (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeremian/)
  Thursday, December 4th 2003 17:18

System :: Networking

About: Active port forwarder uses SSL for secure packet tunneling. It is
designed for people without an external IP who want to make some services
available on the Internet. afserver is placed on the machine with a
publicly accessible address, and afclient is placed on the machine behind
a firewall or masquerade. This makes the second machine visible to the
Internet. Running afserver does not require root priviledges, nor does it
use threads or other processes.

Changes: UDP protocol forwarding/tunneling has been added. The routine
for making connections has been improved. Some other small bugfixes have
been made.

About: bandwidthd tracks usage of TCP/IP network subnets and builds HTML
files with graphs to display network utilization. Charts are built by
individual IP. It color codes HTTP, TCP,UDP, ICMP, VPN, and P2P traffic.
Unlike MRTG, it tracks each individual IP address, not the status of any
particular link. It is easy to install, low overhead, and has few
dependencies.

Changes: This version now compiles and works under BSD without problems.

  Thursday, December 4th 2003 06:50

About: Biferno is a new generation object-oriented Web scripting language
that allows developers the rapid implementation of dynamic Web
applications and of sites that offer a high degree of user interactivity.
It is implemented as a Web server add-on module that allows dynamic
generation of HTML pages; the result of the processing of the Biferno code
by the server determines the page content. A Biferno script is a
server-side script. It is also an "HTML-embedded" language: scripts can be
written in pure Biferno language, but can also contain HTML code segments
between Biferno code blocks. Extensive documentation for the language and
the runtime system is available.

therefore run on any Web hosting platform with PHP 4 and above installed.
DOMIT! requires coupling with a SAX parser. You can use either the SAXY
parser that comes bundled with DOMIT! or the Expat parser that is included
in most later PHP distributions.

About: FireSite CMS is a Web Content Management system targeted at Web
developers who need a fixed framework for handling information and access
to that information. The access model is based on roles and users. The
system has an API to access information stored, hiding the access
management completely. Through modules it is easy to add handling of
specific information needs. A built-in WYSIWYG HTML editor and a simple
interface makes it ideal for experts and beginners alike.

Changes: This is the first release candidate for Firesite CMS 2.01. New
features include a smoother interface with larger areas for the content
forms, new search dialog, better handling of MS Word pasted content, and
an improved inline HTML editor. Important bugfixes were made regarding
missing titles on articles and a forbidden message when saving. Several
other bugs were fixed. Users are advised to reinstall from scratch,
including the database.

Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development

About: gpp is a general-purpose preprocessor with customizable syntax,
suitable for a wide range of preprocessing tasks. Its independence from
any programming language makes it much more versatile than cpp, while its
syntax is lighter and more flexible than that of m4. The syntax is fully
customizable, which makes it possible to process text files, HTML, or
source code equally efficiently in a variety of languages.

Changes: This is a dead and incompletely documented branch based on GPP
2.1 from the default branch. Most of the differences are internal changes
to speed performance when processing particularly complicated macros.
These changes will probably eventually be merged with the default branch.
Unless you are using very tricky macros and are particularly concerned
about execution speed, you would probably be better off with a release
from the default branch.

About: Krename is a very powerful batch file renamer for KDE3 which can
rename a list of files based on a set of expressions. It can copy/move the
files to another directory or simply rename the input files. Krename
supports many conversion operations, including conversion of a filename to
lowercase or to uppercase, conversion of the first letter of every word to
uppercase, adding numbers to filenames, finding and replacing parts of the
filename, and many more. It can also change access and modification dates,
permissions, and file ownership.

Changes: This release adds a Dutch translation, and fixes an annoying
segmentation fault on many systems (including Gentoo Linux). Some other
minor bugs were fixed, and a new feature, escaping of special characters,
was added. You can now use KRename command tokens like "&" in filename, by
adding "\&".

folder, or copies of matching messages in an mbox folder, which can be
browsed normally in a mail client.

Changes: Support for mbox folders was added. Wildcards can now be used to
specify folder names. Searches on Message-ID were added. The exit status
varies depending on whether any matches were found (like grep). The '+'
character inside email addresses is now handled. Various small

About: Nasal (Not another scripting language) is a small, simple, yet
full-featured language designed as extension language in situations
where larger languages are simply to large or unwieldy to embed. It
supports OOP syntax and functional programming, works on the traditional
data realm of strings, vectors, and hashes, and does it all in less than
100k of ANSI C. Please note that this is not the NASL extension language
from the Nessus project.

  Thursday, December 4th 2003 11:36

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: ObjectScript is a general purpose object-oriented programming
language. It is designed to be simple to learn, easy to use, and powerful,
combining the convenience of an interactive interpreter with many of the
features of Java: a simple Java-like syntax, javadoc support, a class
system (single inheritance), private vs. public fields and methods,
exceptions, synchronization and threading, regular expressions, etc. Since
it can be interactively interpreted, ObjectScript can be used to debug or
learn Java systems. And since it supports extending Java classes and
interfaces, it can add sophisticated scripting to an existing Java
application.

Changes: There are many new enhancements: regular expressions, mixins, an
alternate loop syntax for iterating over a collection, revamped stack
track mechanism (faster and correct), some performance enhancements, Java
bean property access, BSF support, and more.

[061] - XRay Web Scraping Tool 2.0
  by malpal (http://freshmeat.net/users/malpal/)
  Thursday, December 4th 2003 17:15

About: XRay is a GUI tool for monitoring and logging all HTTP messages
that transpire between any number of arbitrary Web clients and any number
of arbitrary Web servers. A treeview control maintains the association
between the HTTP request and the server's response to that request, while
a text window simultaneously records all headers and fields of all
messages, preserving the actual order in which messages have been sent.
The entire content of the text window may be saved as an ordinary text
file at any time, while individual messages or sequences thereof may be
copied and pasted to the system clipboard for use by external
applications. XRay also embeds an instance of JEditorPane, which functions
as an internal Web browser. Internal requests (requests originating from
the embedded client) may, at the discretion of the user, be captured and
proxied in a manner identical to that in which external requests (requests
originating from a Web browser) are. There is alo an option to write all
informational and error messages to the console.

Changes: This version runs much faster and does not perceptibly slow down
your Web browser. It also contains some additional conveniences, namely,
the ability to decode chunked/gzipped data, content linearization, and
GUI- configurable application properties.
