Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: Animail is a multiserver POP3/APOP/IMAP4 (with or without SSL) mail
retrieval utility. It features an advanced filtering system based on
blacklisting, whitelisting, or a combination of both. It is possible to
send an autoresponse which prompts people to reply and add themselves to
the 'autoaccept' file. It also allows filters based on regular expressions
which match against the email headers. (If a message is filtered, only the
header is downloaded, not the entire body.) Combining external filtering
programs (e.g. SpamAssassin or Bogofilter) as message post-download
plugins is also easily acomplished, thus extending filtering capabilities
in an unlimited way. Available delivery options include mailbox, maildir,
local SMTP, and pipe to a command.

Changes: Two minor bugfixes for the configuration parser were backported
from the unstable version.

is the integration of IMAP folders with Quotient Pools. This allows for
nifty ways of working with Quotient from an IMAP client. For instance, if
you use Quotient as your IMAP server, and drag a message into the 'Spam'
folder, it will detect that and use the filed message for training
SpamBayes. Or you can drag a message into the 'Blog' folder and it will
show up on your Quotient blog.

[020] - ErfurtWiki R1.01c
  by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)
  Tuesday, December 2nd 2003 19:38

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: ErfurtWiki is a fast, user-friendly, and highly configurable Wiki.
It can store its pages and binary content with MySQL, PEARDB/dbx/ADOdb,
dba/dbm, PhpWiki13, or a flat file database. It allows very easy
integration into existing Web sites, and features case-insensitive
WikiLinks, extensive CSS support, admin tools, and includes documentation.
While the core "library" is fully contained in one script file, a large
collection of extension plugins is also available. It is intended to be
used for frequently refreshing, community, and collaboration Web sites.
However, the simplicity of its image caching/uploading feature makes it
also a good choice as a small "CMS" for private homepages.

Changes: Image links and HTML entity leaks have been fixed. The optional
authentication interface has been partially changed. New plugins provide
Unix filesystem-like page permissions, fancy integrated user management,
anonymous logins, password locks, and either form- or HTTP auth-based
logins. New core plugins provide language negotiation, fuzzy plural page
name matching, page redirects, subpage listing, HTML tag balancing (like
tidy), search term highlighting, a global hitcounter page, a fancy list of
new pages, thread grouping of page posts, and Wiki tarball export. The
anydb plugin now works with PostgreSQL.

[027] - gentoo 0.11.45
  by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
  Tuesday, December 2nd 2003 14:36

Desktop Environment :: File Managers

About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to
act on them. The package includes a set of over 120 unique handcrafted
icons, for many different types of files.

Changes: A logic error has been fixed in Move that caused it to fail when
moving within same filesystem, and also to fail to refresh if FAM was not
in use. A broken formatting string in MkDir's overwrite dialog message has
been fixed. An untranslatable string in the Configure command's option
text has been fixed. Gentoo no longer copies any attributes for symlinks,
which was never a very good idea. The Russian translation has been
updated.

System :: Shells

About: ggiterm is a software terminal emulator like xterm. However
instead of X, it uses the GGI system for its rendering, which allows it
to be displayed on anything from a framebuffer to multi-screens across
networked hosts (including ordinary X sessions). It features multiple
font formats, anti-aliasing, vt100 compatibility, and full
internationalization.

Changes: Heavily reworked code, but few user-visible changes. The default
TERM value is now "ggiterm" instead of "ansi", whose definition is not
consistent across systems. There is i18n support in input as well as
output, vt100 compatibility, and no more iconv dependency. This release

  by Thorsten Kukuk (http://freshmeat.net/users/kukuk/)
  Tuesday, December 2nd 2003 01:06

About: The pam_unix2 PAM module is for traditional password
authentication. The advantages of this particular version are full
SecureRPC and NIS+ support, HP-UX password aging, and password encryption
with DES, bigcrypt, MD5, or blowfish. It allows the modification of user
accounts in the source files for NIS maps on the NIS master server, if
they are not the standard files in /etc.

Changes: This version includes SELinux support for changing passwords and
preserves the extended attributes of /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.

PostScript, HTML, ANSI, and XML. The XML is expressed in a
formatting-oriented style to allow you to develop a wide range of reports.
SQL is then embedded into the report to give you the desired data. Papyrus
is commandline-driven, and data arguments can be passed into the report.
Equations and expressions can also be carried out on data.

Changes: Printing of address labels was added so you can now generate
labels from your reports. Several bugs in the text generation engine were
fixed and the documentation was also tidied up.

[062] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.3
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Tuesday, December 2nd 2003 11:33

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
lightweight system daemons written in Perl and C that are designed to work
with Linux iptables firewalling code to detect port scans and other
suspect traffic. It features a set of highly configurable danger
thresholds (with sensible defaults provided), verbose alert messages that
include the source, destination, scanned port range, begin and end times,
TCP flags and corresponding nmap options, email alerting, DShield
reporting, and automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic
configuration of iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, psad
incorporates many of the TCP, UDP, and ICMP signatures included in Snort
to detect highly suspect scans for various backdoor programs (e.g.
EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven), DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced
port scans (syn, fin, Xmas) which are easily leveraged against a machine
via nmap. Psad also uses packet TTL, IP id, TOS, and TCP window sizes to
passively fingerprint the remote operating system from which scans
originate.

Changes: Nearly 100 signatures from the snort IDS have been added. Source
and destination network processing has been added to the signature
matching code. Chain tracking has been added for all signatures. Firewall
policy parsing routines have been re-worked. Chains that have a default
policy of DROP are handled properly now. There is a buffer overflow bugfix
in kmsgsd.c for the size of buf[MAX_LINE_BUF] buffer in read() call.
Support for the iptables output chain and support for metalog have been
added.

[081] - System Configuration Collector 1.4.28 (Stable)
  by scholtz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scholtz/)
  Tuesday, December 2nd 2003 06:10

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: System Configuration Collector (SCC) is yet another configuration
collector. It consists of a client and a server part. The client collects
configuration data in a structured snapshot, compares the new snapshot
with the previous one, and adds differences to a logbook. Then the
snapshot and the logbook are converted to HTML for local inspection.
Optionally, the data can be sent to a system running the server software.
On the server, summaries of the data are generated, and search/compare
operations on the snapshots and logbooks are available via a Web
interface.

Changes: A server component has been added to the software. Clients can
transfer data to a server where summaries are generated and the data can
be searched and compared. The scc-collect script has been split in system
and user-modules. Plugins of the previous release should be converted to
modules. Refer to the manual page of scc-collect for more details. Much of
the contents of the OpC database is incorporated in the snapshot via a
user-module. SCC-data can be encrypted when it is sent via email.

[082] - The SlotSig library 0.3
  by kafka-fr (http://freshmeat.net/users/kafkafr/)
  Tuesday, December 2nd 2003 19:32

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The SlotSig library tries to provide a solution to the common
problem of sending messages between various C++ classes (this has nothing
to do with Corba or KDE's DCOP). Similar solutions to this problem can
also be found in Qt or libsigc++, but this library tries to be both
simpler to use and smaller. It also provides better type-checking at
compile-time to avoid finding errors at runtime, when it's usually too
late.

Changes: This release is a complete rewrite with simpler code, hopefully
more easily usable. It defines new namespace and classes names and adds a
Python script to auto-generate support for more than 16 parameters to
signals/slots.

Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: The TOAD C++ GUI Library is a set of classes to create graphical
user interfaces with the X Window System. While still under development,
it aims to be an alternative to other popular GUI libraries in the future
by providing innovative features that ease the development process.

Changes: This snapshot improves the look and feel of some widgets, scales
the figure editors grid, and removes a bogus assertion in the signal and
slot code. The object serialization is now setting the C locale to avoid
problems with reading and writing floating point values. The
figureeditor example is now able to output Postscript files.

[094] - zlib 1.2.1
  by Oliver Jost (http://freshmeat.net/users/oje_oje/)
  Tuesday, December 2nd 2003 07:40

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: zlib is designed to be a free, general-purpose, legally
unencumbered, lossless data-compression library for use on virtually any
computer hardware and operating system. The zlib data format is itself
portable across platforms. Unlike the LZW compression method used in Unix
compress(1), the compression method currently used in zlib essentially
never expands the data. (LZW can double or triple the file size in extreme
cases.) zlib's memory footprint is also independent of the input data and
can be reduced, if necessary, at some cost in compression.

Changes: This release adds many improvements and features to zlib.
