Multimedia :: Graphics

About: aiSee reads a textual, easy-to-read, and easy-to-learn graph
specification and automatically calculates a customizable graph layout.
This layout is then displayed, and can be printed or interactively
explored. aiSee features 15 basic graph layout algorithms (including
force-directed layout), recursive subgraph nesting, fish-eye views, and an
animation interface. It has been optimized to handle huge graphs
automatically generated by applications (e.g. compilers).

Changes: This release features improved layout of clustered subgraphs and
improved exporting of wrapped subgraphs to PostScript and SVG. Support
for SVG namespaces has been added. The default values of several graph
attributes have changed; new attributes have been added. GDL syntax
highlighting packages are now freely available for many popular open
source  text editors/viewers.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: ClanLib is a cross-platform game SDK currently supporting Windows,
Linux, and BeOS. It provides easy-to-use interfaces for 2D graphics,
sound, resources, networking, and OpenGL. The goal is to provide a game
SDK that does all the dirty work that all modern games need to implement
anyway, thus making the game developer concentrate on the gameplay instead
of reinventing the wheel over and over again.

Changes: Optimized using vertex arrays for an up to 1.5x speed increase.
Texture packer is fixed to use the max texture size supported by the
grahpics card, a getopt_long() style command line parser,
CL_System::get_exe_path() returns the location of your binary., CL_Log
now has a severity argument., CL_Signal has functor support, a minor
ClanGUI fix, CL_Component::sig_close, a GUIStyle example, a GUIWindow
example, misc. overview updates (signals and GUI theming), fixes for .so
version issues, and preparations to allow stable and development versions
 to coexist in the future.

[008] - DKMS 0.36.05
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Friday, September 19th 2003 16:12

System :: Systems Administration

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages
since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as
a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Changes: The required DKMS directives LOCATION and MODULE_NAME have been
replaced with the arrays BUILT_MODULE_NAME[#], BUILT_MODULE_LOCATION[#]
(optional), DEST_MODULE_NAME[#] (optional) and DEST_MODULE_LOCATION[#].
This allows much more flexibility in finding and renaming modules and
placing them in various locations of your /lib/modules tree. Also, in
dkms.conf you should no longer append the .o or .ko to the end of module
names. Instead, based on what kernel you are building a module for, DKMS
will figure out the suffix (if <2.5 then .o, otherwise .ko) and will work
appropriately.

About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for Unix email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and effectively
filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques, token
chains, and Bayesian analysis. The result is an administratively
maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. This approach, applied to
a mature corpus of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate
with less than a 0.01% chance of false positives.

Changes: Trusted user security has been added. A storage driver
abstraction layer + API has been added with drivers for MySQL, libdb4,
and libdb3. A dspam_merge tool has been created for creating seeded

  Friday, September 19th 2003 11:00

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed
using C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each
datum to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various data
sources and expose them as contexts and to generate interesting EA.
Current implementations include Native (kernel disk IO with event updates
using fam), xml (mount an xml file as a filesystem), edb (mount a berkeley
database), ffilter (mount an LDAP filter string) and mbox (mount your
mailbox). EA generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: Agent support, including a new command line tool, agent plugins,
and a capplet. The ability for agents to make fuzzy assertions and
retractions about which emblems a file should have. There is a new
on-disk medallion format, and this release can load Version1 and
Version2 and save Version2 medallions. A new XML Lexicon class, medallion
editor upgraded for fuzzy emblem association, a huge speedup in
getEmblemListViewPixbuf(), optional use of libtextcat to guess the human
language for files, and a new EA emblem:has-fuzzy-Z for resolution of
agent assertions on files and emblems.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: libstldb4 is a C++ wrapper for the sleepycat db4 database. It uses
the STL in the API where sensible, allows standard IOStreams for data
access where sensible, e.g. getting the value of a key should be able to
use an istream interface to allow simple partial value retreival, and
moves the transaction parameter to be the last optional parameter or
provides two versions of the same method for trans/nontrans. The API has
been modified to use more standard types. Operator overloading is used to
allow quick and dirty coding (mydb[ "key" ] = "value";) to set and cerr.

Changes: This release adds a close() method so databases can be explicitly
closed and exceptions handled before the destructor call. The default null
environment doesn't implicitly create a transacted environment as a side
effect anymore. getWithDefault() has been added to allow getting a value
with a default value on error.

[028] - ModLogAn 0.8.10
  by ostborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/ostborn/)
  Friday, September 19th 2003 07:12

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: ModLogAn is a modular logfile analyzer that combines speed with
flexibility. It parses the logfiles generated by several server-types
(HTTP, FTP, mail, streaming, etc.) and other logfile sources (flow-tools,
ipchains, PABXs): currently 24 parsers. It features incremental logfile
processing and internal resolving, and is able the split (mass-hosting)
and combine logfiles (clusters) internally. The output can be based on the
internal template engine to generate your own look & feel.

Changes: The template engine has been improved for memory usage and speed,
and the translations have been reworked. A new parser has been added for
mod_log_sql and the ippl parser now has support for ipmod. Some minor bugs
have been fixed and two segfault problems are now gone.

About: NetInstaller lets you create setup wizards for Web applications
written in PHP. Users only have to upload two files; everything else will
be decompressed online on the server, created, and configured. This
eliminates the need to perform tedious permission changes (with chmod) or
to upload of hundred of files in order to install a PHP application onto a
Web server.

Changes: The most interesting new feature is an integrated, form-based

directly for your configuration files which will be shown during the
installation. This allows the user to configure the installation before
accessing it the first time.

  Friday, September 19th 2003 16:06

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern
matcher, multi-volume support, the ability to archive sparse files and
ACLs, the ability to archive extended file flags, automatic archive format
detection, automatic byte order recognition, automatic archive
compression/decompression, remote archives, and special features that
allow star to be used for full and incremental backups. It includes the
only known platform independent "rmt" server program that hides Linux
incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star package implements all
Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any "rmt" client from any OS to
contact any OS as server.

Changes: This release can create CPIO V7 archives. "Unknown POSIX.1-2001
keywords" warning are now printed only once. The new program "suntar"
behaves like /bin/tar on Solaris. The new program "scpio" is (SUSv2/SVr4)
cpio compliant. This release can check archive entries from
/etc/default/tar (SVr4), and handle EINTR for stat()/lstat() in getinfo().
There is a new man page for the star archive format. A bug that caused
star to hang if a GNU tar 'M' header or a POSIX.1-2001 'g' header was seen
has been fixed. Following POSIX PAX Rationale ././@PaxHeader now has
TUREAD|TUWRITE permissions.

Scientific/Engineering
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Operating System

About: Warewulf is a Linux cluster implementation tool that builds RAMDISK
based filesystems and distributes them to the slave nodes. This
facilitates a Central administration model for all nodes and includes
tools needed to build configuration files, monitor, and control the nodes.
It is totally customizable and can be adapted to just about any type of
cluster. The node distributions are built from a virtual node filesystem
residing on the master and transfered to the nodes either by Etherboot or
CD-ROM images. Administration becomes scalable by having only one point of
admin for all nodes. Node filesystems are very easy to customize, which
makes Warewulf fit many different solutions. There are also a number of
add-on software components (MPI, PVM, and Sun Grid Engine) for Warewulf.

Changes: Support has been added for various authentication mechanisms
(NIS, LDAP, etc) for the master node. Plugins have been built for Nagios
so that node status can be easily monitored. Tiny RAM disk support using
NFS root has been built (very experimental). Some packages have been added
to the virtual node file system, and some code has been cleaned up.
