Education
Education :: Testing
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: Asymptopia Crossword Builder is a JavaScript application. A robust
GUI allows users to submit arbitrary length lists of key-hint pairs which
can be regenerated an unlimited number of times until the user wants to
accept the layout. The dhtml interface provides a configuration panel,
key- generating panel (i.e. answer sheet), puzzle-generating panel (blank
squares with numbers for accross/down), and an across-down-hints panel
which generates the text hints and numerical location on the puzzle. It
includes support for hyphenated words, and an example file demonstrating
how you can produce math crosswords.

Changes: This release adds support for hyphenated words, which makes it
possible to do math crosswords with words like "twenty-two", etc. The
package contains example text files demonstrating some of the
possibilities.

About: Bochs-Tools is a collection of scripts and programs to be used
together with the Bochs emulator. The main goal is to provide a more
Unix-like interface to the emulator and to enable access to Bochs disk
images from outside of Bochs. This project makes it very simple to copy an
existing OS installation to a Bochs image (as long as Linux has write
access to the relevant file system).

Changes: This release will not exit bxtmkfs on mkswap-fsync errors.

[008] - CDemu Kernel Module for Linux 0.5.3
  by Robert Penz (http://freshmeat.net/users/robertpenz/)
  Sunday, September 14th 2003 12:27

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: CDemu (previously Virtual CD Kernel Module for Linux) is a kernel
module for Linux which can simulate a CD drive that contains a CD. It uses
simple cue/bin files as input for the data that should appear on the
virutal disc. It includes a user space program which controls the kernel
module. This is primarily useful for watching an SVCD or mounting the data
track of a bin/cue CD image without burning the data to a real CD.

Changes: A makefile has been added, and there is a minor cue file parsing
enhancement.

  Sunday, September 14th 2003 01:35

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: CodeWorker is a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. An extended BNF syntax allows the definition of new
domain-specific languages or parsing existing formats. A template-based
syntax like PHP and JSP allows the writing of patterns for generating
code. The code generation knows how to preserve protected areas with
hand-typed code and offers code expansion, source-to-source translation,
and program transformation. These tasks are executed in a straightforward
process, with no binding to an external programming language and with no
translation of requirements specification in a constraining format.

Changes: Now, procedures running a script (for parsing / generating /
translating / interpreting) accept the script to be embedded between '{'
and '}', instead of expecting the path of the script only. A new boolean
operator 'in' checks whether the result of an expression belongs to a
set or not. There is a new function 'resolveFilePath()', and a bugfix
that eliminates crashes.

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)

About: Cone (COnsole Newsreader And Emailer) is a text-based email client.
It seamlessly handles multiple POP3 and IMAP accounts and local mail
folders. It is also a simple newsreader. It is designed to be foolproof
enough to be used by inexperienced users, but also offers advanced
features for power users.

Changes: On sent messages, the character set is now set to "us-ascii" if
possible. SMTP tunneling over SSL has been implemented. Messages can now
be "tagged"; tagged messages are shown with a different background color
in the folder index screen. With most IMAP servers, Cone and Mozilla will

About: CxxTest is a JUnit/CppUnit/xUnit-like framework for C++ that
doesn't require RTTI, member template functions, exception handling, or
any external libraries (including memory management, file/console I/O, or
graphics libraries). It is distributed entirely as a set of header files

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dnsmasq is lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder designed to
provide DNS (domain name) services to a small network where using BIND
would be overkill. It can have its upstream DNS servers automatically
configured by PPP or DHCP, and it can serve the names of local machines
which are not in the global DNS. It can integrate with the ISC DHCP daemon
to serve the names of local machines which are configured using DHCP.
Dnsmasq is ideal for networks behind NAT routers and connected via modem,
ISDN, ADSL, or cable-modem connections.

Changes: This release includes new, fairly minority-interest features. Bug
fixes and efficiency improvements were also made. Upgrading is
recommended.

Information Management :: Document Repositories

About: Drugref is a collaborative effort to create and maintain a database
of pharmaceutical reference information, tagged by language, country, and
reference source. A Web interface written in PHP4 allows the community of
health professionals to maintain and review content. The database
structure, implemented in PostgreSQL, is designed to facilitate automated
decision support. "Tagging" allows one to import information from any
source in parallel, thus allowing drugref to work as a generic interface
to any kind of (comercially or freely) available drug reference
information.

Changes: drugref.org has launched the first test version of a drug
interaction server. It is publicly accessible and based on the XML-RPC
protocol. It allows a client to send a list of drugs, and returns a list
of possible interactions between these drugs.

  by Ben Escoto (http://freshmeat.net/users/bescoto/)
  Sunday, September 14th 2003 01:31

System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another. The target
directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs
are stored in a special directory so you can still recover files lost some
time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an
incremental backup. rdiff-backup can also operate in a bandwidth-
efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup
and ssh to securely back up to a remote location, and only the differences
will be transmitted. It can also handle symlinks, device files,
permissions, ownership, etc., so it can be used on the entire file system.

[064] - Spotter 2.1.3
  by Ben Crowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/bcrowell/)
  Sunday, September 14th 2003 12:54

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)

About: Spotter is software that can check students' answers to symbolic
and numerical problems in math and science. It recognizes an answer
regardless of the form it's in, and the instructor can put in helpful
hints as responses to frequently-occurring mistakes. Symbolic answers can
be input in a notation closely resembling normal human math notation
(e.g., xy rather than x*y, and sin x instead of sin(x)). Spotter runs as a
Perl CGI application on a Web server; the student doesn't need to install
any software.

Changes: Better error handling has been added to the email functions.
Users will probably not notice any difference unless they use Spotter with
OpenGrade to send messages to students, and duplicate those messages via
email.

[071] - Ultra-Performance UDPForwarder 3.2
  by ocr.D-Link*Aiwa (http://freshmeat.net/users/Aiwa/)
  Sunday, September 14th 2003 01:28

Games/Entertainment
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: UDPForwarder listens on multiple ports to forward incoming UDP
datagrams from clients to the corresponding server and forwards the
server's response back to the client. This works 100% transparently, so
clients think they are talking to the forwarder and the server does not
notice the clients' real IP. It was initially designed to work as a
transparent relay for online game traffic (static routing). It might be
useful for hiding IPs or tricking firewalls. Its motivation and advantage
over existing tools is its uncompromising focus on performance, which is
crucial when dealing with hundreds and thousands of datagrams per second
without allowing any rise in response time.

Changes: This version includes IP grant and ban policies for access
control, rapid block policy lookup, memory optimizations, and additional
inlines.

[072] - VideoDB 2003-09-14

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Games/Entertainment

About: VideoDB is a database to manage your personal video collection.
It's mainly designed for videofiles but you can also put your DVDs and VHS
tapes in it. It features fetching movie data/covers from the Internet
Movie Database (IMDb), local caching of coverimages, an option to mark
movies as seen, a search by genre or title/subtitle/plot/cast data, a
filter for TV episodes, a random movie function and a simple borrow
manager. It is a personal database, so no user management/authentication
scheme is implemented. Everybody may add/edit/delete movies.

Changes: The IMDB parsers were updated to reflect the changes in their
link formats. An internal IMDB Browser was added, which allows movies to
be added directly from within the IMDB site. A bugfix was made to upload
covers from an URL with Konquerer. The configuration table can be defined
in the config file, which allows multiple configurations with the same
movie data. Various languages were updated, and Brazilian Portuguese was
added. The checks for writable cache directories were improved. Some code
cleanup was done on the IMDB parsers.
