[004] - ale text editor 0.9.9-1
  by jem (http://freshmeat.net/users/idiotstick/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 23:26

About: ale (Another Linux Editor) is a small, fast text editor with very
basic features. It is designed to edit or create config files or other
text based files. It supports long line lengths (65535 characters), and
the number of lines is limited only by the available memory. It has a
basic text search function, goto line, and other basic editing functions.
It is not intended to be an IDE or to parse regex expressions, but when
you need speed and low overhead.

Changes: This version detects the terminal type and adjusts its command
set accordingly to avoid problems with gnome-terminal.

[005] - Arbitrary Command Output Colourer 0.4.6
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 11:32

Desktop Environment :: Theme
Desktop Environment :: Theme Resources :: Fonts
System :: Console Fonts

About: acoc is a regular-expression based colour formatter for programs
that display output on the command-line. It works as a wrapper around the
target program, executing it and capturing the stdout stream. Optionally,
stderr can be redirected to stdout, so that it, too, can be manipulated.
acoc then applies matching rules to patterns in the output and applies
colours to those matches.

Changes: A bug has been fixed that caused signals not to be passed to
child processes attached to a pseudo-TTY. Additionally, ping is now
allocated a pseudo-TTY, as its behaviour changes if stdout is not a TTY.

[011] - Bluetail Ticket Tracker 4.0
  by tnt (http://freshmeat.net/users/tnt/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 23:20

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: The Bluetail Ticket Tracker (BTT) is a system for creating,
storing, and keeping track of tickets. A ticket describes an issue of some
sort. It can, for example, be a Trouble Report or a ToDo note. BTT also
makes it possible to store customer information, which can be coupled to a
ticket. Finally, BTT comes with a "wikie-style" knowledge base.

Changes: The Yaws Web server was employed and a new look and feel was
added. It is now possible to attach files to tickets. Version handling is
supported in the knowledge database, and support for English, German,
French, Spanish, and Galician was added.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: The BugPort system is a Web-based system to manage tasks and
defects throughout the software development process. It is written with
the PHP language, using its object-oriented capabilities, and is in use by
INCOGEN for internal management of software development and QA.

Changes: A new HTML filters system was put in place. Two filters were made
as a proof of concept: one turns http:// strings into links, and the other
turns UNC paths (\\server\dir\file.txt) into links. AImage->getHTML was
also adjusted so that button tooltips will now appear in Gecko-based
browsers. Two bugs were addressed to avoid errors when adding attachments
to projects with spaces in their name.

[013] - BusyBox 1.0.0-pre3
  by Erik Andersen (http://freshmeat.net/users/andersee/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 03:26

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Boot :: Init

About: BusyBox combines tiny versions of many common UNIX utilities into a
single small executable. It provides minimalist replacements for most of
the utilities you usually find in GNU fileutils, shellutils, etc. The
utilities in BusyBox generally have fewer options than their full-featured
GNU cousins; however, the options that are included provide the expected
functionality and behave very much like their GNU counterparts. BusyBox
provides a fairly complete POSIX environment for any small or embedded
system.

Changes: This version features bugfixes and cleanups.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis

About: DRC generates digital room correction FIR filters to be used within
HiFi systems in conjunction with real time convolution engines like
BruteFIR.

Changes: This release adds two parameters to control the gain-limiting
procedures. These parameters control a sort of "soft clipping" of the
frequency response, avoiding ringing on abrupt truncations. A new
parameter to select the magnitude type of the target frequency response
(either linear or expressed in dB) has been added. The ability to perform
microphone compensation has also been added. The license has been switched

protocol specification for user sessions and port forwarding. The
specification currently supports public key and password authentication
and a full implementation of the SFTP protocol.

Changes: This release fixes a number of minor issues and has also been
optimized to speed up the process of establishing connections to SSH
servers. The SftpClient methods put/get have been fixed to allow a
directory to be specified as the target; the name of the source file is
then used. The SftpClient method put has been fixed to allow an absolute
path to be specifed for the remote only parameter. Port forwarding can be

About: Mindmeld is an enterprise-capable knowledge sharing system
designed for any Web community that needs to capture and share
information. It is unique in that the knowledge base grows smarter every
time it's used. It incorporates terms used in each search into a
contextual map of the answer itself, continually improving its ability
to derive contextual information from a given search. The system learns
how people typically search for an answer by identifying which terms are
most valuable in any specific context.

Changes: A major session bug that caused the feedback buttons to throw an

[058] - MPGEDIT 0.7 beta
  by Adam Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/numbr6/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 11:27

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors

About: mpgedit is an MPEG 1 layer 1/2/3 (MP3), MPEG 2, and MPEG 2.5 audio
file editor that is capable of processing both Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and
Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoded files. mpgedit can cut an input MPEG file
into one or more output files, as well as join one or more input MPEG
files into a single output file. Since no decoding or encoding occurs
during editing, there is no audio quality loss when editing with mpgedit.
mpgedit features command line, curses-based, and graphical interfaces. The
curses and graphical versions feature an interactive playback mode for
fast selection and verification of edit begin and end times.

Changes: This release adds xmpgedit, a GTK+ graphical interface version of
mpgedit, with releases for Linux and Windows. Important usability
enhancements have been made to the curses version. There is a new native
installer for xmpgedit and mpgedit releases on Windows. New Xing header
update features have been added to the command line mpgedit, and
regression tests have been rewritten in Perl for portability.

[074] - PhysicsFS 0.1.9
  by icculus (http://freshmeat.net/users/icculus/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 23:35

Software Development :: Libraries

About: PhysicsFS is a library to provide abstract access to various
archives. The programmer defines a "write directory" on the physical
filesystem. No file writing done through the PhysicsFS API can leave that
 write directory, for security. For file reading, the programmer lists
directories and archives that form a "search path". Once the search path
is defined, it becomes a single, transparent, hierarchical filesystem.
This makes for easy access to ZIP files in the same way as you access a
file directly on the disk, and it makes it easy to ship a new archive
that will override a previous archive on a per-file basis. Symbolic links
can be disabled, for added safety. Finally, PhysicsFS gives you a
platform- abstracted means to determine if CD-ROMs are available, the
user's home directory, where in the real filesystem your program is
running, etc.

Changes: The license was changed from LGPL to zlib. .NET assemblies and
C# bindings were added along with HOG and MVL archive support for Descent
I/II, more accurate Mac OS X/Darwin CD-ROM detection code, MiNT support,
lots of cleanups, and  bugfixes.

[075] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.2.3
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 23:30

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of four
lightweight system daemons written in Perl and C that are designed to work
with Linux firewalling code (iptables in the 2.4.x kernels, and ipchains
in the 2.2.x kernels) to detect port scans. It features a set of highly
configurable danger thresholds (with sensible defaults provided), verbose
alert messages that include the source, destination, scanned port range,
begin and end times, TCP flags and corresponding nmap options (Linux 2.4.x
kernels only), email alerting, and automatic blocking of offending IP
addresses via dynamic configuration of ipchains/iptables firewall
rulesets. In addition, for the 2.4.x kernels psad incorporates many of the
TCP, UDP, and ICMP signatures included in Snort to detect highly suspect
scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven),
DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port scans (syn, fin, Xmas)
which are easily leveraged against a machine via nmap. Psad also uses
packet TTL, IP id, TOS, and TCP window sizes to passively fingerprint the
remote operating system from which scans originate.

Changes: This release tracks the interfaces on which scans arrive. A
problem with not opening /etc/ hosts.deny for appending in tcpwr_block()
was fixed, and the psadfifo path was fixed in the syslog-ng config.
Formatting of the summary stats section in email alerts was improved, and
 Psad.pm is now installed last to eliminate minor installation warnings.
An additional call to incr_syscall_ctr() was added to psadwatchd.c.

[090] - The Nice programming language 0.9.2 (Development)
  by Daniel Bonniot (http://freshmeat.net/users/bonniot/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 23:50

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Nice is a new object-oriented programming language based on Java.
It incorporates features from functional programming, and puts into
practice state-of-the-art results from academic research. Among the
advanced features: parametric types, anonymous functions, multi-methods,
tuples, optional parameters to methods, design by contract, detection of
many errors during compilation (in particular, concerning casts and null
references). This results in more expressivity, modularity, and type
safety.

Changes: This release simplifies the language by removing the distinction
between functions and methods. It also implements the dynamic type
inference of local variables tested with instanceof: after ' if(x
instanceof MyClass) ', the local variable x has type MyClass, so that no
cast is needed.

[091] - The XSLT C library for GNOME 1.0.33
  by DV (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielveil/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 08:34

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Libxslt is a C library for GNOME which allows developers to work
with XSLT. It is based on libxml for XML parsing, tree manipulation, and
XPath support. Also included is 'xsltproc', a command line XSLT processor.
The library is written in plain C, making as few assumptions as possible,
and sticking closely to ANSI C/POSIX for easy embedding. It should work on
Linux, Unix, and Windows. Though not designed primarily with performances
in mind, libxslt seems to be a relatively fast processor. It also include
full support for the EXSLT set of extension functions as well as some
common extensions present in other XSLT engines.

Changes: This is a bugfix release closing a dozen reported problems. It
also includes some changes for compiling on Windows.

[094] - which 2.15
  by Carlo Wood (http://freshmeat.net/users/aleric/)
  Friday, September 12th 2003 06:36

System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Which is a utility that prints out the full path of the executables
that bash(1) would execute when the passed program names would have been
entered on the shell prompt. It does this by using the exact same
algorithm as bash. Tildes and a dot in the PATH are now expanded to the
full path by default. Options allow to rather print "~/*" or "./*" and/or
to print all exectuables that match any directory in PATH.

Changes: This release adds support for automake-2.7.2 and autoconf-2.57.
It also changes the way it searches for executables of the same name in
PATH; it will now skip files that are not executable even though the "x"
bit is set on group or others. This can happen because when you own a file
only the owner permission bits apply, likewise for the group permission
bits. This was actually a bug in bash (and still is), but some
distributions have changed bash to this more compliant behavior.
