[002] - a place to go 0.5.3 (Development)
  by Tillmann Heidsieck (http://freshmeat.net/users/jashugan/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 17:21

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: aptg(2) (a place to go) is a Web-based email client written in PHP,
using localhost connections to a running IMAP4 server. It is designed to
work with Postfix. Authentication is against a MySQL database as used by
pam_mysql (username + password) or by using one of the virtual email
addresses (also stored in the MySQL database) and that password. A
powerful addressbook is also included. It uses its own session handling
system with one-time session ids. The development version has experimental
GnuPG support.

Changes: The GnuPG support was extended, and now simple encrypted messages
can be decrypted by aptg2. The ability to "QuickBrowse" an email folder
was added.

About: The abcMIDI suite consists of programs for turning ABC music files
into MIDI and vice versa, typesetting them as PostScript files, and
manipulate them in several ways.

Changes: The midi2abc program now features new command-line switches for
specifying the number of measures per line.

[004] - Afian 1.4.5
  by Afian (http://freshmeat.net/users/afian/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 09:36

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Afian is a Web-based file manager which allows you to upload,
rename, create, and delete files on a server through HTTP, eliminating the
need for an FTP client. It has a clipboard with Cut, Copy, and Paste
features. The easy-to-use interface lets you select multiple files and
folders by clicking on their icons (there are no checkboxes). Context
menus and dialog boxes appear on the screen without refreshing the page.
The script looks pretty and installs quickly.

Changes: Multi-user support has been added. The administrator defines
multiple user accounts and edits passwords. Each user can manage its own
separate root folder, so you can assign individual home folders to people,
or have many people share one directory. Each user has its separate
Web-based clipboard and Trash bin. The option to view the contents of ZIP
files without extracting them has been added. Compatibility with earlier
versions of PHP has been improved.

[005] - aMule 1.0.3
  by COLIN Stéphane (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinsteph/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 12:57

Communications :: File Sharing

About: aMule is short for "another eMule file-sharing program". It is
another fork of the xMule project. It connects to the eDonkey2000 network,
and supports Linux, *BSD, and Mac OS X platforms. aMule's distinctive
feature is its new vision of the GUI.

Changes: The 'Edit Category Properties' dialog has been changed. Comments
count in the 'File Comments' dialog and a bug introduced in 1.0.2
(couldn't call comments in File Details) have been fixed. The
mmMultiButton has been removed from the source (no longer used).

[006] - avlmap 0.12.2
  by Phil Howard (http://freshmeat.net/users/philhoward/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 12:16

Software Development :: Libraries

About: AVLMAP is a key:data pair data mapping (associative array) library
for C programming based on AVL balanced binary trees. Added features
include ordered data retrieval forward or reverse, support for optional
duplicate keys (e.g. an extra linked list not needed), and the ability to
find the nearest member if an exact match isn't available. Both key and
data types may be selected from a choice of C data types including string
and array variations. One mapping always has one key type, but data types
may be mixed within a mapping.

Changes: This release changes to the same style of configuration file used
in LIBH, adds missing header includes for string.h [cs] and alloca.h, and
removes some inlines that were not handled by gcc 3.3 and some mapping
sources that had no code.

[008] - banner 1.2.2 (Stable)
  by Kenneth J. Pronovici (http://freshmeat.net/users/pronovic/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 22:44

Utilities

About: banner fills an apparent hole in Linux - that is, that is does not
provide a "banner" program itself, while nearly all UNIX systems seem to
do so. banner prints a "banner" on the screen that corresponds to the
first 10 characters of a string entered on the command line, in a way
similar to what you might see when using Solaris or AIX. There are fancier
things out there, but this is nice and simple.

Changes: This version features general documentation and code clean-up. I

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Page Counters

About: BBclone is a PHP Web counter on steroids which displays individual
logs as well as aggregated data. It is a clone of Big Brother webstats,
except that it is written in PHP and it relies only on flat files (no
database needed). BBclone enables any Web site administrator to have a
very precise view of who visit the website: OS, browser, date, referring
page etc. Main features include reload resistance, hostname resolution,
proxy workaround, and blacklist.

Changes: Critical issues with file corruption and data loss during high
server load have been fixed. This release adds an automatic stats update
routine and a switch to optionally turn off the BBclone status report as a
comment in the HTML source. There are also new extensions and browser
detection patterns.

[014] - Cheap Threads 2.5.2
  by Scott McKellar (http://freshmeat.net/users/mck9/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 04:03

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Cheap Threads is a collection of portable C routines for
implementing sychronous threads. It includes a scheduler and a facility
for passing messages among threads. Threads may run in a round robin or
according to a priority scheme. Each thread must voluntarily relinquish
control from time, via an ordinary function return, so that other threads
can run. Since the threads are synchronous, i.e. they don't interrupt each
other, they don't need to use semaphores, mutexes, critical sections, or
other facilities to keep from interfering with each other. One version of
Cheap Threads is designed for embedded systems.

Changes: The Cheap Threads functions can now be called directly from C++
programs. A new sample program, demo1, was included to demonstrate two
threads that take turns writing to standard output.

[015] - checksuite 2.4
  by Larry Long (http://freshmeat.net/users/djslyde/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 02:37

System :: Systems Administration

About: checksuite is a suite of programs that provide notification and
assistance with day-to-day system administration tasks. These programs
monitor system resources as well as some security aspects on a system.
There are several options that can be passed to the command line, and a
full listing can be shown by passing a -h to each program.

Changes: This version uses Net::SMTP instead of relying on /bin/mail.
When thresholds are hit, there is now a greater chance that notifications
will succeed. The code was also cleaned up.

  Monday, September 8th 2003 13:16

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: CodeWorker is a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. An extended BNF syntax allows the definition of new
domain-specific languages or parsing existing formats. A template-based
syntax like PHP and JSP allows the writing of patterns for generating
code. The code generation knows how to preserve protected areas with
hand-typed code and offers code expansion, source-to-source translation,
and program transformation. These tasks are executed in a straightforward
process, with no binding to an external programming language and with no
translation of requirements specification in a constraining format.

Changes: This release adds new functions and BNF directives for the
BNF-parsing scripts. There are bugfixes in textual representations of
floating points and indentation of C++ files.

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Communications :: Ham Radio

About: CWirc is a plugin for the X-Chat IRC client to transmit raw Morse
code over the internet using IRC servers as reflectors. The transmitted
Morse code can be received in near real-time by other X-Chat clients with
the CWirc plugin. CWirc tries to emulate a standard amateur radio rig: it
sends and receives Morse over virtual channels, and it can listen to
multiple senders transmitting on the same channel. Morse code is keyed
locally using a straight or iambic key connected to a serial port, or
using the mouse buttons, and the sound is played through the sound card,
or through an external sounder.

Changes: The QRM generation code and mixing have been corrected, the QRM
is now louder, a small bug in the GUI has been fixed, and the squelch is
now more sensitive.

[022] - DKMS 0.34.10
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 12:58

System :: Systems Administration

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages
since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as
a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Changes: The dkms_autoinstaller service
(/etc/rc.d/init.d/dkms_autoinstaller) has been added. Its purpose is to
automatically install modules during bootup into kernels which do not
already have those modules installed. It only does this if
AUTOINSTALL="yes" is set in that module's dkms.conf. If multiple versions
of the same module exist in DKMS, the autoinstaller does not do an install
for that module and warns appropriately.

Software Development

About: DRT is a design recovery tool for interactive graphical
applications running under the X Window System. The tool automatically
captures actions performed while using such an application. Functions
particularly relevant to each action are highlighted. Moreover, the action
itself is described visually from fragments of the application display.
One can search and browse these actions to learn about the design of an
application.

Changes: This release added preliminary support for arcade games, flight
simulators, and other real-time graphical applications.

[024] - DSPAM 2.7.0-beta.1
  by Network Dweebs Corporation (http://freshmeat.net/users/jzdziarski/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 07:17

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns
spam using a Bayesian statistical approach which provides an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam service. Each
email is broken down into its most interesting tokens, each assigned a
spam probability. All probabilities are then combined to produce a
statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to a mature corpus
of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate with less than
a 0.03% chance of false positives.

Changes: Security was enhanced by means of trusted users, argument
overrides, and additional data integrity checks. Restricted non-trusted
access to certain commandline flags (such as changing their effective
dspam user ID) and passthru arguments to avoid hijacking other tools that
dspam calls (such as the local delivery agent) have been added. The user
recognition and user passthru approach has also been changed in an effort
to decrease confusion about passing the userid to the delivery agent, and
therefore some configuration changes will need to be made prior to
upgrading.

[026] - e4Graph 1.0a9
  by jyl at mod3.net (http://freshmeat.net/users/jyljyljyl/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 02:36

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
System :: Archiving

About: e4Graph is a C++ library that allows programs to store graph-like
data persistently and to access and manipulate that data efficiently. With
e4Graph, you can arrange your data in the most natural form that reflects
the relationships between its parts, rather than having to force it into a
table-like format. The e4Graph library also allows you to concentrate on
the relationships you want to represent, and not on how to store them in a
database. You can modify data items, and add and remove connections and
relationships between pieces of data on the fly. e4Graph allows you to
represent an unlimited number of different connections between pieces of
data, and your program can selectively manipulate the data according to
the relationships it cares about, not having to know about other
connections represented in the data set.

Changes: A major bug in the cache management for vertices was fixed.
Version information was added to storages to identify the release of
e4Graph used to write the storage. APIs were added to discern the
version of e4Graph currently running.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: EmPy is a system for embedding Python expressions and statements in
template text. It takes an EmPy source file, processes it, and produces
output. This is accomplished via expansions, which are special signals to
the EmPy system and are set off by a special prefix (by default the at
sign, '@'). It can expand arbitrary Python expressions and statements in
this way, as well as a variety of special forms. Textual data not
explicitly delimited in this way is sent unaffected to the output,
allowing Python to be used in effect as a markup language. Also supported
are callbacks via hooks, recording and playback via diversions, and
dynamic, chainable filters. The system is highly configurable via command
line options and embedded commands.

Changes: Unicode support was added, which requires Python 2.0 or above.
Document and Processor helper classes were added for processing
significators. The --no-prefix option was added for suppressing all
markups.

[031] - FIRE|GATE 0.79
  by lunarfox (http://freshmeat.net/users/lunarfox/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 22:43

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: FIRE|GATE is a Linux IPtables script for use as a firewall and
NAT/masquerade router for home networks or SOHO applications. It shares
access to a single Internet connection from multiple workstations, and can
optionally forward all inbound HTTP, SMTP, or other requests to internal
servers (as opposed to a DMZ). Hardware requirements are modest, with an
i486 with 16MB RAM being capable of handling at least 10 machines (if not
many more). FIRE|GATE differs from many online examples in that it is
heavily commented, so it's understandable; it is fully contained in one
script; it includes SYSCTL parameters for increased strength; it addresses
IM client file transfers; and there is no need to specify/grep for the
external IP, even if assigned via DHCP.

Changes: This version adds TCP 4444 outbound block to deal with
W32.Blaster and variants, fixes a bug where when CAM/ CAMIP variables were
null, a script error appeared, adds indicators showing FIRE|GATE's
progress, and a variable "COLOR" to use ANSI for (re)start/stop/status
messages. When DHCP variable is blank, script allows any DHCP server
traffic inbound; if DNS variable is blank, all DNS traffic is allowed
inbound (previous behavior dropped traffic, which can generate
substantial logs).

Database :: Front-Ends

About: Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into
streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing
"ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML,
and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML
into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be
used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check
and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and
process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex
object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even
handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.

About: KCachegrind visualizes traces generated by profiling, in various
ways, including a TreeMap visualization of the calls happening, and a
condensed version, the Coverage analysis. It's designed to be fast and to
provide a quick overview of very large programs, such as KDE applications.
It uses Cachegrind as profiling backend, which uses the CPU simulator in

shared libraries and plugin architectures, and allows for profile runs to
not influence the measuring by the profile itself, however, the
disadvantage to this is slower profile runs.

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: pyredir is a flexible but simple redirector for Squid implemented
in Python. URLs matching Python regular expressions can be redirected
using regular expression substitution, databases of filename-to-url
mappings, alternative config files, or child redirectors. Utilities are
provided for generating database files from file archives and config files
from adzap patterns. It is primarily useful for redirecting requests to
large local FTP archives, but it can also be useful as a top-level
redirector that seperates and feeds requests to more specialized child
redirectors.

Changes: The adzap URLs in adzap2pyredir were changed to the new location
on SourceForge. Support for ignoring unknown adzapper multi-part patterns
 such as PRINT was implemented.

[084] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 2.0
  by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
  Monday, September 8th 2003 01:56

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into
runnable C code. It allows you to embed actions at any point in your
regular language and to control the non-determinism in the resulting
machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or" operator), kleene
star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some helpers like "!", "?"
and "+". Ragel's finite state machines are closed under all of its
operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular lanuages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.

Changes: Many language changes were made. The most notable changes were
postfix repetition operators, named priorities that reduce undesirable
side-effects, and a simpler C/C++ interface that can indicate when a
machine can no longer accept input.

  Monday, September 8th 2003 12:22

Games/Entertainment
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: UDPForwarder listens on multiple ports to forward incoming UDP
datagrams from clients to the corresponding server and forwards the
server's response back to the client. This works 100% transparently, so
clients think they are talking to the forwarder and the server does not
notice the clients' real IP. It was initially designed to work as a
transparent relay for online game traffic (static routing). It might be
useful for hiding IPs or tricking firewalls. Its motivation and advantage
over existing tools is its uncompromising focus on performance, which is
crucial when dealing with hundreds and thousands of datagrams per second
without allowing any rise in response time.

Changes: This release adds minor optimizations on Unix and fixes linker
errors on some Posix systems and configuration file parsing.

the terrain of the world, and its creatures, conflicts, and encounters.

Changes: Kills now enhance hit points, attack, or damage. Combat
resolution is affected by how wounded each combatant is. Player kills,
turns, and enhancements were added to pickle. An optional world/author
line is now available in world.data. On POSIX systems, a top ten player
