[001] - Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy 0.3.0
  by John Hanna (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhanna777/)
  Thursday, July 10th 2003 14:16

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: The Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy (ASSP) Server project aims to create an
open source platform independent SMTP Proxy server which implements
whitelists and Bayesian filtering to help stop unsolicited commercial
email (UCE). Anti-spam tools should be adaptive to new spam and customized
for each site’s email patterns. This easy to use tool works with any mail
transport and achieves these goals requiring no operator intervention
after the initial setup phase.

Changes: This is a major release with bugfixes over 0.2.1 and significant
feature enhancements. New features have been added to the web-admin
interface, and a new email interface has also been added. This release can
be considered feature-complete.

[002] - Apes 1.0
  by PtiYo (http://freshmeat.net/users/PtiYo/)
  Thursday, July 10th 2003 00:27

About: Apes is a process production tool (in the project management
meaning of the term). It enables you to model according to the SPEM
standards. Once the model is created, it enables you to generate a Web
site that documents the process. The advantages offered by this tool are
conformity with a standard, the ability to validate a process model, and
the ability to easily modify a model and to regenerate the associated Web
site.

About: arCHMage is an extensible reader and decompiler for files in the
CHM format. This is the format used by Microsoft HTML help, and is also
known as Compiled HTML. arCHMage is based on chmlib by M. Russotto.

Changes: This preliminary version only includes a command-line
decompressor. It can be used to decompile .chm files and to generate a
template-based HTML/JavaScript interface to decompressed files. Sample
templates are included. There is no documentation or error checking at
that moment. A command such as 'archmage chm_file target_directory' should
be used to run arCHMage.

  Thursday, July 10th 2003 06:52

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: In Armagetron, you ride a lightcycle around the game grid. You can
only make sharp turns of 90 degrees and a wall constantly builds up after
you. Make your enemies crash into your wall, but be aware that they are
trying to do the same to you. If you are fast enough, you may be able to
trap them, but the only way to speed up your lightcycle is to drive close
to the dangerous walls. Prepare for exciting strategic preparations
followed by action-packed close combat!

Changes: This release fixes some critical issues. A server freeze which
occurred when too many people played too long was fixed. Explosions now
have exactly the same effect on the clients as on the server. Some less
critical fixes were also made.

Internet/intranet or everything else you want to do with a stepmotor.

Changes: This version has an new Web interface design (configurable). The
Web interface is complete rewritten in PHP 4. There is a bugfix in
shutdown and PID management (daemon), a new configuration system, message
queue IPC in the daemon, and a Makefile update. The old driver code bugs
of version 2.3.2 have been fixed. File-based IPC has been removed from the
daemon.

About: Bid Monkey is a command line tool, written in Perl, created to
automatically place a bid on an eBay auction at the last minute. It will
run in the foreground or background, and only requires basic information
from the user, such as username, password, item number, and the maximum
bid to place. Its most unique feature is that it will automatically
determine the auction ending time. All you have to do is tell it how long
before the end of the auction you would like to place your bid. Bid Monkey
will work internationally (eBay.de for example) due to the fact that any
item number can be viewed through any eBay site.

Changes: Changes have been made to accomodate the revamping of the eBay
Web site. A --bid_now option has been added for immediate bidding. There
is some minor reorganization.

  by Nic Henke (http://freshmeat.net/users/henken/)
  Thursday, July 10th 2003 20:05

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Clubmask is a 'glue' package that combines the outstanding
management and speed of the Bproc distributed process layer with the power
and configuration of the Maui HPC Scheduler. It uses the Supermon resource
monitor to gather node information. This node information is combined with
job submission data, and suplied to Maui. Maui issues job start and
termination commands which are handled by Clubmask via the Bproc layer.
Clubmask also supplies a 'supermon2ganglia' translator that allows
supermon data to be displayed in a ganglia Web frontend.

Changes: Clubmask has been 99% rewritten, and now focuses entirely on
providing a resource manager that can combine the use of the Maui
scheduler and the Bproc process control layer.

About: Confirm is an email challenge-response system which virtually
eliminates all unsolicited email. It is written in C and procmail, and is
easily customized. Unsolicited email is checked against valid
sender/recipient headers; unauthorized email is held pending a one-time
confirmation reply from the sender.

Changes: Confirmation messages can now be customized by using a standard
text file rather than by editing the c-source code directly. An annoying
bug in approving confirmation email with multiple recipients has been
fixed. Site-specific variables can be set within a global confirmation
file. Documentation has been updated along with minor program tweaks.

About: Dr.Cat (Dave's Remote Cat) concatenates a file on a remote Linux
host that is running the Dr.Cat daemon (drcatd) to stdout in the clients
terminal. It authenticates users versus the standard shadow password
authentication facility and spawns a process with that users permissions
to attempt to access the requested file. If the file exists and the user
has the necessary permissions the file is sent to stdout on the clients
terminal; otherwise it returns "file not found".

Changes: An optional configuration file was added to the drcatd daemon.
Several configuration options are settable in the configuration file or
with new runtime flags. A deny user list was also added. The deny user
list is implemented from a comma-separated list in the config file. All
the man pages, usage information, INSTALL and README files have also been
rewritten and many blatant errors were fixed. This release represents a
major update.

About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns
spam using a Bayesian statistical approach which provides an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam service. Each
email is broken down into its most interesting tokens, each assigned a
spam probability. All probabilities are then combined to produce a
statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to a mature corpus
of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate with less than
a 0.03% chance of false positives.

System :: Networking

About: Ettercap is a network sniffer/interceptor/logger for ethernet LANs.
It supports active and passive dissection of many protocols (even ciphered
ones, like SSH and HTTPS). Data injection in an established connection and
filtering on the fly is also possible, keeping the connection
synchronized. Many sniffing modes were implemented to give you a powerful
and complete sniffing suite. Plugins are supported. It has the ability to
check whether you are in a switched LAN or not, and to use OS fingerprints
(active or passive) to let you know the geometry of the LAN.

Changes: Plugins now work with the GTK+ interface. The passive OS
fingerprint database was updated (1200+ entries). A lot of bugs were fixed
in order to have a stable release while development is focused on ettercap
NG (0.7.0). The list of fixes includes: internal refreshing (for huge
traffic loads), the wifi-dump support, doppleganger re-arp on shutdown, a
problem with signed char under Mac G3, and some possible buffer overflows
in the ncurses interface.

About: The awk utility interprets a special-purpose programming language
that makes it possible to handle simple data-reformatting jobs with just a
few lines of code.

Changes: POSIX is followed in handling of local numeric formats for input,
output, and number/string conversions. Multibyte detection has been
improved. Handling of 'close' was made more POSIX-compliant for
POSIXLY_CORRECT. Automake was updated to 1.7.5. configure.in was renamed
to configure.ac. C-style switch statements are available, but must be
enabled at compile time via 'configure --enable-switch'. %c always prints
no more than one character whatever precision is provided.
strtonum(<number>) now works again. gettext was updated to 0.12.1.
Historical practice and POSIX is followed for the return value of 'rand':
it's now 0 <= N < 1.

Changes: This release is orders of magnitude faster for mailboxes which
have very large (over 30MB) messages in them, and uses about 3 times less
memory. -- now marks the end of options and the beginning of folders. -f
now reads patterns from a file like GNU grep does. Smail compatibility has
been added. Date specifications without times (e.g. "today") are
interpreted as midnight of the given day instead of the current time of
that day. The -t flag has been renamed to -j. Broken Gnus support and

About: pam_sqlite allows developers to authenticate users against a table
in an SQLite database. It supports checking account information
(pam_acct_expired, new_authtok_reqd) and updating authentication tokens.

Changes: query string quoting has been changed to the excellent
sqlite_mprintf() interface, which allows for cleaner memory allocation as
well. This gets rid of query string calculation and allocation.

Security

About: PHPCoder is a Web-based frontend to the Turck MMCache encoding
functions, which are similar to the Zend Encoder product. PHPCoder enables
you to encode your PHP scripts and applications into non-reversible
bytecode, thus preventing users of your programs from viewing or altering
the source code while having full functionality. Another excellent use for
PHPCoder is to encode your applications PHP configuration files, that way
someone viewing your source code does not see your databae login and
password information. It also allows you to set restrictions on the
encoded scripts, you can lock a script to a particular server IP address,
server host name, visitor IP, or even place a time limit on the script so
it will expire after a configurable amount of time. You specify Text,
HTML, or PHP code that should be prepended and appended to each file
before it is encoded, allowing you to easily and securely implement your
own licensing scheme.

Changes: Absolute expiration date by typing in the date. Scripts can now
be locked to multiple visitor IPs, server IPs, and server names. There are
fixes to the coder class, better HTML and CSS, TurckLoader.so instead of
mmcache.so, and improved error handling. This release verifies that
subdirectories are writable.

About: The Python RPM utilities allow you to merge multiple directories
containing various versions of RPMs in to one directory that has symlinks
to the most up to date version of each package, install packages based on
name and have all of the dependencies installed automatically, or update
all of the RPMs on a system.

Changes: All directories are scanned from a configuration file now, with
no specifying them on the commandline. The merge_rpms command was removed,
as this is done on the fly as the RPMs are scanned for dependencies. The
commands were changed to rpm_install and rpm_update for consistency. Setup

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: quicktables is an iptables firewall/NAT (gateway) script generator.
It was created to quickly provide a secure set of iptables rules. It will
ask you to answer a small handful of questions, and generates your very
own personalized firewall script. It supports NAT and no NAT (firewall
only) options, default policy of DROP on INPUT and FORWARD chains (all
packets dropped), TCP and UDP ACCEPTs on INPUT chain (open ports to the
firewall machine), TCP and UPD port forwarding with NAT (forward ports to
multiple internal hosts--NAT only), multiple ICMP (ping) options, multiple
logging options (syslog - kern.info), explicit host drops, and multiple
port forwards for multiple external IP addresses.

Changes: This is a complete script rewrite with some added features
including new support for rp_filter to prevent IP spoofing, support to
autodetermine interfaces, IP addresses, and file locations simplifying the
creation of the firewall for the very newbie types, greatly-simplified
port forwarding, support for selecting --dport on the internal host where
packets are being forwarded to, and more.

  by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
  Thursday, July 10th 2003 20:06

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into
runnable C code. It allows you to embed actions at any point in your
regular language and to control the non-determinism in the resulting
machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or" operator), kleene
star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some helpers like "!", "?"
and "+". Ragel's finite state machines are closed under all of its
operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular lanuages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.

About: Regex is a C++ wrapper for PCRE. It's based on the unmaintained C++
wrapper by Hugo Etchegoyen, but has been updated for easier, more
intuitive use, and behaves more like perl.

Changes: This release supports Perl-like syntax, such as MyRegex[1] being
the same as $1. It also supports substitutions using backrefs from the
initial match, like MyRegex.sub(String, "$1$1") to double each match. It
also supports Perl-like global matching syntax with while (MyRegex.match

About: Turck MMCache is a PHP accelerator and encoder. It increases
performance of PHP scripts by caching them in a compiled state, so that
the overhead of compiling is almost completely eliminated. It also uses
some optimizations for speeding up PHP scripts' execution. It typically
reduces server load and increases the speed of PHP code by 1-10 times. It
is tested with PHP 4.1.0-4.3.2, and Apache 1.3 and 2.0 under Linux and
Windows.

Changes: Content compression was reimplemented. A bug in runtime
class/function declaration was fixed. An optimization was implemented for

About: Webzap is an framework for the development of Web applications or
views of multiple tier client server systems using the WingS API. Webzap
can be used as a 'glue' language for EJB development. For instance, if you
have a couple of session EJBs, these could be easily combined using
Webzap. In Webzap, your application is defined in an XML file with the
.webzap extension. It mainly defines the user interface objects and what
should happen if a user interface object triggers an event. The controls
are layed out using a template HTML file with the .thtml extension.

Changes: Pipes are now also functions. Variables can now be bound
permanently to functions. Two new special functions that embed other
