quality icons, translucency and alpha blending effects, unicode support,
and Windows/Linux compatibility.

Changes: This release adds an all-new high-resolution icon set, including
an auto-resize feature to rescale icons to the size of the display. New
graphics optimizations and features include fade-enabled icons and menus,
translucent effects, selective transparency, fast blending, shadow
casting, and non-rectangular windows. High quality image resampling has
been added for the enlargement and shrinking of images. Translucent
scrollbars eliminate the obscuring of background content. All Athene
desktop environments have been specially revised to demonstrate the new
features.

[023] - DKMS 0.32.04
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Friday, July 4th 2003 00:18

System :: Systems Administration

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages
since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as
a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Changes: This version adds support for 2.5 kernels. For >2.4, it uses a
generic make command (make -C $kernel_source_dir SUBDIRS=$build_dir
modules) instead of what is specified in dkms.conf. Also, it no longer
does a "make dep". SuSE initrd support was also added. If it detects the
SuSE type mk_initrd command, it modifies /etc/sysconfig/kernel if
REMAKE_INITRD is set and then calls mkinitrd which will remake all
initrds that it knows about (may cause exit status 9 since some kernels
won't have this module). Only during the final removal of a module are
the changes removed from /etc/sysconfig/kernel.

[027] - fastutil 3.0.1
  by Sebastiano Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/vigna/)
  Friday, July 4th 2003 00:31

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: fastutil provides type-specific maps, sets, and lists for Java with
a small memory footprint and much faster access and insertion. The classes
implement their standard counterpart interfaces (e.g., Map for maps) and
can be plugged into existing code. Besides the usual features, fastutil
provides reference-based containers (which do not use equals() to compare
objects) and linked structures. Most iterators provided by fastutil
classes are bidirectional, or even implement the standard list iterator
interface.

Changes: A small but important bug in serialisation has been fixed. Some
new iterator static methods have been implemented.

About: fax4CUPS is a very simple shell script that acts as a CUPS backend
for a serial fax modem. Essentially, you print with lpr and the fax is
sent. The nice thing is that you have CUPS around, and this means, for
instance, that you can check whether your fax has been sent just using
your favorite browser (as you would do for any other printer), even if the
fax modem is really on a remote server. It supports efax, HylaFAX, and
mgetty-fax.

[038] - Infotrope ACAP Server 0.0.5

  Friday, July 4th 2003 19:13

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Address Book

About: The Infotrope ACAP Server is an implementation of RFC2244,
complete with asynchronous notification of changes, stored search
results, ACLs, and data inheritance, etc. It supports TLS and SASL
encryption as well as almost the entire base standard, plus a few
optional extensions. ACAP allows applications to store configuration data
in a way that's standards based, fully interoperable, and easily managed
by users, administrators, and technical support teams alike. Infotrope's
key features include the ability to randomly crash the server without
data loss, and backing up of data (even while it's being written) without
losing integrity.

Changes: And thus was an odd-numbered release foist upon the unsuspecting

being written, and another bug too that wasn't a data loss bug, but
Mulberry didst make it look a bit like one. And there really was quite a

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,

[049] - Modeling Framework 0.9pre9
  by Sébastien Bigaret (http://freshmeat.net/users/sbigaret/)
  Friday, July 4th 2003 11:14

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Modeling Framework fills the gap between the Python object world
and relational databases in that it allows users to transparently create,
retrieve, update, or delete Python objects from a database without having
to write a single line of SQL. Main features include generation of
database schema, generation of Python code templates ready to be used,
support for transparent mapping of (class) inheritance in relational
databases, object-oriented query language, use of standard Python getters
to traverse relationships (the related objects are automatically fetched
when needed and when appropriate), and automatic checking for
referential-integrity constraints, etc. Supported databases are PostgreSQL
and MySQL.

Changes: This release introduces a new and handier API for fetching
objects, and the User's Guide has been updated to reflect this. SQLite was
added to the list of supported databases. A dependency on 4Suite has been
removed. The PostgreSQL adaptor now accepts the TEXT datatype.

About: NanoBlogger is a simple blogger written in bash that's completely
command-line driven. It features easy editing and management of entries,
customizable templates, archiving, and RSS syndication. It keeps
"clippings" of all your entries for extra portability and modularity. It
doesn't require any kind of Javascript, server-side scripting, or
server-side includes. Updating your Weblog is as simple as uploading the
appropriate Weblog's (self-contained) directory to your Web site.

Changes: This version fixes major flaws in archiving code, and adds a
config file to control settings for the blog. There is a major rewrite of
templates and stylesheet so divs are used instead of tables. Many
enhancements were made to the core functions plus the addition of some

  Friday, July 4th 2003 00:22

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 15, which contains 6,220 foods
and 117 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals,
fats, calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the
essential polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are
expressed as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of
food labeling in the United States, but also can be fully customized.
Recipes can be added, and graphs drawn. The program is completely
menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release removes test code for features that were not
implemented, displays the calorie-derived values for protein and carbs on
the "Daily Value" absolute value screen (and the real values on the
subsequent screen) to aid in setting the personal options, and
coherently puts together the algorithms from the previous two releases
for figuring the essential fatty acid reference value ranges.

[060] - Poppassd-ceti 1.8.3
  by Oliver Schulze L. (http://freshmeat.net/users/mrjones/)
  Friday, July 4th 2003 00:25

System :: Networking

About: Poppassd-ceti is a Qualcomm password changer daemon with PAM
support and several other improvements. This program is intended to be a
secure way to change system passwords via the Web. Methods that involve
calling SUID programs directly from the Web are especially avoided.
Poppassd strictly isolates the Web interface from actual password
manipulations. The program contains no known security bugs that could be
reported since it was released several years ago. This version uses PAM,
which means you can do anything PAM can. Currently, there are PAM
modules for almost all known authentication methods available.

Changes: This version has changed the default PAM service name from
"passwd" to "poppassd" and added some more cleanups to password and
username length. Configuration hints were also added.

[064] - py_ecc 1.2
  by Emin (http://freshmeat.net/users/emin63/)
  Friday, July 4th 2003 06:44

Scientific/Engineering

About: py_ecc is an implementation of Reed-Solomon codes, which are used
for erasure correction, and a collection of routines for finite field
arithmetic and generic matrix operations. Erasure correcting codes let
you divide information, such as a file or a packet, into n pieces, of
which k are required for reconstruction. It provides a clear, easy to
understand reference for other implementations of linear error correcting
codes, and contains extensive documentation and a number of detailed
examples and tests.

Changes: This release adds a Solve method in genericmatrix.py and fixes a
bug in the LUP method. The new Solve method solves a possibly
overdetermined set of linear equations. These changes are probably only of
interest to those using the routines in genericmatrix.py for their own
projects, as opposed to those only using the rs_code.py or file_ecc.py
packages.

  Friday, July 4th 2003 13:44

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: UDPForwarder forwards incoming UDP datagrams from a client to a
specified server and forwards the server's response back to the client.
This works 100% transparently, so clients think they are talking to the
forwarder and the server does not notice the clients' real IP. It was
initially designed to work as a transparent relay for online game traffic
(static routing). It might be useful for hiding IPs or tricking firewalls.
Its motivation and advantage over existing tools is its uncompromising
focus on performance, which is crucial when dealing with hundreds and
thousands of datagrams per second without allowing any rise in response

About: Uncle Unc is a framework for working with trees of objects.
Existing services such as filesystems, code libraries, networks, log
files, mailboxes and directories can be mapped onto this object tree, as
can some traditional desktop applications. User interfaces work directly
with the object tree, offering best of breed interface design (e.g.
filtering, breadcrumb bars, paging, sorting, and file-explorer-like views)

completeness of representation, and reusability of both front end and back
end code.

Changes: The Sirius GUI viewpane can now switch between a simple list and

About: Valtz is a simple tool that can be used for validating and
filtering tinydns-data (djbdns) zonefiles. It can be used both as an
error-finding tool by end users and by automated scripts to filter out
errors. Additionally, it can be used to filter out domain-specific data
that does not belong in a given file. Thus, importing zone information
from third parties, semi-trusted parties, and sloppy users can be done
without fear.

Games/Entertainment
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering

About: white_dune is a graphical VRML97 editor. VRML97 (Virtual Reality
Modeling Language) is the ISO standard for displaying 3D data over the Web
via browser plugins. It has support for animation, realtime interaction
and multimedia (image, movie, sound). White_dune can read VRML97 files,
display and let the user change the scenegraph/fields, and load and store
x3d (the next generation VRML XML format) files if configured to work with
the nist.gov x3d translators. It also has support for stereoscopic view
via "quadbuffer"-capable stereo visuals, and support for 3D input devices
like a joystick, spaceball, or magnetic tracker.

Changes: This release decreases Aflock starting time by reducing security
sleeps and adds a -fieldofview option to overwrite fieldofview fields of
VRML viewpoints. This can be useful for stereoviewing. It adds a bugfix
for the Linux joystick test and updates the documentation.
