Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: Abe's Amazing Adventure!! is a scrolling, platform-jumping,
key-collecting, ancient pyramid exploring game, written vaguely in the
style of similar games for the Commodore Plus/4.

Changes: Abe! is now code-complete with a stunning end-of-game sequence.
The map is bigger, there are new monsters (including a see-through ghost),
and many misc. bugs were fixed.

[002] - APSR 0.16
  by Maik Pfeil (http://freshmeat.net/users/arbon/)
  Saturday, April 12th 2003 06:39

System :: Networking

About: APSR is a network testing tool designed to send and receive
arbitrary network packets. Its main purposes are firewall, security,
routing, and a lot of other tests. It can also be used to analyze your
network. The project is split into three main programs: apsend to create
and send packets, aprecv to dump the network traffic, and the apsrlib
which provides the appropriate low-level functions. A very wide range of
protocols are supported by the aprecv program. The application layer is
implemented through modules using a simple API. Modules can be written in
Perl, Ruby, C, or PCL (a special-purpose packet construction language).

Changes: The following protocols have been added: PGM, MTP, VTP, EtherIP,
MSDP, BOFL, GSMP, Cisco HDLC, Cisco CGMP, and HCI(bluetooth). More types
have been added to PPP CCP. The new features are .pid file creation in
daemon mode and different error counters.

Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Asterisk is a hybrid TDM and packet voice PBX (Private Branch
eXchange) and IVR telephony toolkit. It acts as middleware between the
Internet and telephony channels (like Zaptel, T1, PRI, E1, FXO, FXS, VoIP,
VoFR, ISDN, modems, Internet Phone Jack, etc.) and applications (like
VoiceMail, directories, MP3 players, intercom, etc.). It has many advanced
features such as a codec translation API. The base distribution includes
several channel backends, as well as applications. However, the beauty of
Asterisk is its ability to be extended using its APIs, dynamic module
loader, and AGI scripting interface. End users can even write their own
applications that run on the system in C or any scripting language of
their choice.

Changes: This release contains major SIP enhancements and additional
features and is now interoperable with virtually all SIP devices. MGCP
support was improved and the IAX2 protocol was added as well. It also now
supports SIP and MGCP connections with NAT and can perform call recording.
The extension logic was extended and macros are now supported. There are
numerous bugfixes as well.

  Saturday, April 12th 2003 06:10

Software Development
Software Development :: Documentation

About: Doxygen is a cross-platform, JavaDoc-like documentation system for
C++, Java, C, and IDL. Doxygen can be used to generate an on-line class
browser (in HTML) and/or an off-line reference manual (in LaTeX or RTF)
from a set of source files. Doxygen can also be configured to extract the
code-structure from undocumented source files. This includes dependency
graphs, class diagrams and hyperlinked source code. This type of
information can be very useful to quickly find your way in large source
distributions.

Changes: A number of problems found in the third release candidate have
been fixed. Apart from that, the most significant improvements are new
options for less verbose LaTeX output and more control over the size of
dot graphs. The customization of the HTML output can now be improved by
putting div and span commands in the documentation.

  by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: ErfurtWiki is a small Wiki engine implemented in PHP which can
store its pages in a MySQL, dba/dbm, ADOdb, or a flat file database. The
Wiki source parsing is rather complete but is very extensible. It stands
out from other Wikis in that it does not define the whole page layout
itself; instead it allows for very quick integration into an existing Web
site. The core "library" is fully contained in one script file, but a
collection of extension plugins is also available (email_protect,
imagegallery, calendar, spellcheck, pagediff, etc.). Additionally, it can
cache referenced images. The simplicity of the image uploading function
makes it also a good choice as "lite" CMS for private homepages.

Changes: Various bugfixes and additions have been made, though this
release is just an unstable snapshot. PATH_INFO is now discarded if an
Apache HTTP server is running, because Apache still follows the broken
CGI/1.1 specification.

  Saturday, April 12th 2003 15:38

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Gwydion Dylan is a portable, optimizing Dylan compiler written in
Dylan. It was originally written by the Gwydion Group at CMU and is now
maintained by volunteers. Eventually, Gwydion Dylan is meant to become a
top-notch tool for building complicated applications. Dylan is a dynamic,
object-oriented language with four design goals: high performance, rapid
prototyping, ease of use, and seamless support for using libraries written
in C. Ports of Gwydion Dylan are available for many platforms.

Changes: Further improvements were made to Common Dylan compliance,
exception reporting, the Melange tool, introspection, and runtime error
checking. There are workarounds for problems encountered with some
versions of gcc 3.x. Support for the HP/UX PA-RISC platform has been
revived, and an alpha version of support for the Mac OS X Cocoa framework
is now included. Also, the testworks unit test library is provided.
There's a technology demonstration of a Dylan interactor (also known as a
REPL to the Lisp folks).

[030] - LibOFX 0.6.4
  by Benoit Grégoire (http://freshmeat.net/users/benoitg/)
  Saturday, April 12th 2003 16:29

Office/Business :: Financial
Software Development :: Libraries

About: LibOFX is a generic library to allow financial software to easily
support the Open Financial eXchange specification. Two utilities are
currently included with LibOFX: ofxdump and ofxtoqif. ofxdump writes to
stdout, in human readable form, everything the library understands about a
particular OFX response file. ofxtoqif is an OFX response to the QIF
(Quicken Interchange Format) file converter. Much OFX information is lost
since the QIF file format is very primitive, but ofx2qif should allow
importation of bank statements in any software that support QIF until said
software supports the library directly. LibOFX was implemented from the
full OFX 1.6 spec and comes with a developers manual.

Changes: A fix for a critical bug that caused the decimals to be ignored
in some locale. For example, importing in gnucash with a locale of fr_FR
caused an amount of 19,95 to be imported as 19,00.

[031] - Lua 5.0 (Stable)
  by Andre Costa (http://freshmeat.net/users/costa/)
  Saturday, April 12th 2003 11:37

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Lua is a programming language originally designed for extending
applications, but also frequently used as a general-purpose, stand-alone
language. Lua combines simple procedural syntax (similar to Pascal) with
powerful data description constructs based on associative arrays and
extensible semantics. Lua is dynamically typed, interpreted from
bytecodes, and has automatic memory management, making it ideal for
configuration, scripting, and rapid prototyping. Lua is implemented as a
small library of C functions, written in ANSI C, and compiles unmodified
in all known platforms. The implementation goals are simplicity,
efficiency, portability, and low embedding cost. It has been used on games
such as Grim Fandango, Escape from Monkey Island, and MDK2.

Changes: Many of the features implemented on 5.0-alpha and 5.0-beta are
now official, along with a couple new ones. Compared to 4.0 version, Lua
now offers coroutines (collaborative multithreading), packaging of
standard libraries in tables, lexical scoping, the replacement of tags
with metatables, the replacement of tag methods with metamethods, a new
boolean type, proper tail calls, weak tables, a new (faster)
register-based virtual machine, a new algorithm for tables, new error
handling protocol, better error messages, safe garbage-collector
metamethods, a new dynamic loading library, and many more changes.

About: Mailfilter is a flexible utility to get rid of unwanted spam mails,
before having to go through the trouble of downloading them into the local
computer. It offers support for one or many POP3 accounts and is
especially useful for dialup connections via modem. You can define your
own filters (rules) to determine which e-mails should be delivered and
which are considered waste.

Changes: This release mainly adds a scoring mechanism to set up more
sophisticated spam filters which allow deleting junk within mailing lists,
for instance. A contrib directory has been added for additional scripts

[034] - MP3 Database II 2.7
  by George Round (http://freshmeat.net/users/ground/)
  Saturday, April 12th 2003 18:38

Database
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: MP3DB2 is a collection of bash scripts for keeping track of large
MP3 collections. It will retrieve song information from the filenames and
ID3 tags of a directory or CD of MP3s and store them in a local
database. It then allows you to search any of the fields, generate a
master listing of all your complete albums, see the size of your entire
collection, and  more.

Changes: This version includes some important bugfixes and major code
cleanups throughout the project tree. The most important bug that was
fixed in this new version concerned the swapping of artist and title
fields in the SPEC file. This also caused the meaning of the -a and -t
commandline options of the search utility to be reversed.

all the playlists. It also has a simple ncurses client for comunicating
with cm3s. All programs run under a non-privileged user account.

Changes: Configure now will allways look for both mpg321 and mpg123, so if
you specify one and it is not found, it will try to use the other one.
Optional argument selection in the portable option parser was fixed. An
optional parameter will be accepted only if it is not the last one. The

[052] - Smarty PHP template engine 2.5.0
  by Monte Ohrt (http://freshmeat.net/users/mohrt/)
  Saturday, April 12th 2003 11:21

Software Development

About: Smarty is a template engine for PHP. Many other template engines
for PHP provide basic variable substitution and dynamic block
functionality. Smarty takes a step further to be a "smart" template
engine, adding features such as configuration files, template functions,
and variable modifiers, and making all of this functionality as easy as
possible to use for both programmers and template designers. Smarty also
converts the templates into PHP scripts, eliminating the need to parse the
templates on every invocation. This makes Smarty extremely scalable and
managable for large application needs.

Changes: All $smarty vars can now be dynamic, such as $smarty.get.$foo. A
new class function get_function_object() gets you a reference to an
assigned object. append() can now merge as well as append. A new class
function get_config_vars() was added, and get_template_vars() can now be
used to get individual vars. Full variable syntax is now supported within
double quotes via a backtick (`) syntax. Files created by smarty are now
written to a tmp file then renamed to avoid file lock retention.
html_radios, html_checkboxes, html_table, html_image, and nl2br functions
added.

  Saturday, April 12th 2003 00:59

System :: Monitoring

About: Squidefender is a Perl script which analyzes a squid log file in
native format to detect attacks. If it finds an attack, it sends a
complaint email to the ISP of the attacker. It also has the option to
execute an external command to take other actions. This can be used to
automatically adapt your firewall when an attack has occured. The power of
squidefender lies in its configuration options, which let you easily add
new attacks to scan for. Another interesting option of squidefender is its
ability to use different message templates based on the attack found.

Changes: You can now specify the host to use to send mail. An option for
ignoring certain IP ranges was added, along with BCC and CC mail fields.
It is now possible to convert the log file to HTML. Before executing
firewall commands, you can backup to a file which will be restored if the
firewall command truncates the original file.
