Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing

About: Abbot is a framework for testing Java GUIs. It lets you launch an
application or GUI component, play back user actions on it, and examine
its state. Tests may be coded or scripted. The editor supports recording
user actions into a script, exploring the component hierarchy, running the
script, and other features you'd expect from a script editor. Test scripts
are JUnit extensions.

Changes: The framework now includes annotations, which are message windows
which can be displayed during test playback. Recording enhancements
include JInternalFrame tracking, window manger window closings, and
enhanced image capture. Many user interface bug fixes are included,
particularly those that interfere with recording.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Text Processing
Text Processing :: Markup

About: AFT (Almost Free Text) is a document preparation system. It is
mostly free form, meaning that there is little intrusive markup; AFT
source documents look a lot like plain old ASCII text. It has a few rules
for structuring your document, more to do with formatting your text than
embedding lots of commands, and it produces all types of output (HTML,
XHTML, LaTeX, roll-your-own XML, etc.). All that needs to be done is to
edit a rule file. You can even customize your own rule files for
specialized output.

Changes: This release has a new, easier markup for doing links/references.
A mechanism (via the SET pragma) has been added to allow variable
definition and expansion in an AFT document. Also, documentation has been
updated.

  by Valdes (http://freshmeat.net/users/mvaldes/)
  Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 04:42

Desktop Environment :: Theme :: Web
Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers

About: Bonita is a flexible cooperative workflow system based on the
workflow model proposed by the ECOO Team, which incorporates the
anticipation of activities as a more flexible mechanism of workflow
execution. This flexibility allows a considerable speed increase in the
design and development phases of cooperative applications. The workflow
engine is built on EJB (Enterprise Java Beans), using Jboss as the
application server. The system offers a comprehensive set of integrated
graphical tools for performing the process conception and definition, the
instantiation and control of this process, and the interaction with the
users and other applications.

Changes: In this version all activity node types are available: AND_JOIN,
OR_JOIN, AND SPLIT, OR SPLIT with traditional, flexible, or automatic
execution modes. Interactives Hooks was added in order to allow the user
to define node actions at different moments of the execution activity
life. The new workflow engine manages traditional, flexible, and automatic
execution modes, and allows the user to cancel execution activities. In
order to control de propagation, the user can associate Java conditions
with activity edges at run time (with the BeanShell Java source
interpreter).

About: Fast Parser is a high performance Java XML parser. Benchmarks
measure it to be up to +400% faster than Xerces and the JDK1.4 integrated
parser. It is ideal for Web services (SOAP) and XSL. The core parsing
package (without DOM) is very compact. It features SAX Level 1 and 2
compliance, JAXP compatibility, namespace support, integration with
JXMLPad for real time parsing, modular libraries, an embedded device mode
(including minimal memory usage), optional XML Comment support, CDATA
support, the ability to include any node type with a custom NodeFactory,
and a walker for easily navigating through XML trees. Many API samples and
benchmark tests are included. JDK1.1 or later is required.

Changes: An XSL sample and support for namespaces, SAX 2, Jaxp, and XPath
subset were added.

  by Andreas Kemnade (http://freshmeat.net/users/akemnade/)
  Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 14:02

Communications :: Internet Phone

About: Gspeakfreely is a VoIP system with a flexible component system. It
implements a set of audio processing components which can be connected to
each other or mixed together. The most important components are net
in/output, which implement VoIP functionality and the OSS-DSP in/output
component. Additionally there is a ISDN in/output component that allows
making actual phone connections, and a file input component that can also
play Internet radio streams. Also included is a fading plugin, that can
for example fade incoming calls into your music. New components can be
developed for specific purposes, and combined with existing ones.

Changes: Encryption is easier to configure. Key transfers using GPG are
supported. A buddy list lets you see to whom you can talk. An sflwld
server is asked for that information. There is a module for voice
activation. The configuration file syntax is easier. The RTP protocol is
partially supported. There is an LD_PRELOAD module to redirect sound
output form other applications. The playlist can be edited more easily.

displayed in a nice and colorful curses environment, but can also be
printed to the standard output from the command prompt.

Changes: This release has an indicator for the newest mailbox, a terminal
bell triggered on new email, better non-color mode, and several other
features. The executable is also much smaller and even more efficient.

[032] - Java Serialization to XML 2 0.8.0
  by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
  Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 02:43

Communications
Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into
streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing
"ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML,
and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML
into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be
used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check
and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and
process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex
object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even
handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.

Changes: "Externalizable" is now supported. Javadocs and manual are also
now available.

About: JFtp is a Swing Java network and file transfer client. It supports
FTP with its own FTP API, SMB using jcfis, SFTP using j2ssh, and local
file IO using the j2se library. It includes many advanced features such as
recursive directory up/download, browsing FTP servers while transferring
files, FTP resuming, browsing the LAN for Windows shares, and more. The
FTP API is separated from the GUI and can also be used in third-party
applications or in a commandline mode. It should ideally be launched in a
Web browser via Java Web Start (contained by the Java 1.4 plugin) but can
also be started locally.

Changes: Secure FTP and SMB connections now support multithreading. It
should now be possible to transfer sftp and smb files from different hosts
at the same time while browsing any type of server. The release also

global std::ostream objects similar to cout and cerr, allowing programmers
to easily port programs to this library. One of it's main features is the
ability to define debug levels, for which only inferior levels would be

About: netcount is a command line PPP traffic logging and statistics
display tool for Linux. Logging is done via a small shell script which is
called during the ip-up, ip-down, and system startup processes and from
cron, while analysis and printing is done by a program written in Python.
Statistics can be made on a per-call, daily, and/or monthly basis. Also
part of the package is nstat, an X utility to display connection status,
to hang up, and to start and terminate pppd.

Changes: netcount-upd was called with the argument "restart" on booting

  Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 07:33

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: PHP Thumbnail AutoIndex is a thumbnail-index generation script
designed to be a companion to mod_autoindex for Apache. It generates a
thumbnail "gallery" of images contained in a directory, which is much like
what mod_autoindex generated indexes.

Changes: By popular request, libGD 1 support was added. It produces
non-antialiased thumbnails which look very ugly, but it allows ThAutoIndex
to be run on very old Web servers. A bug with %XX in URLs was fixed.

[061] - pktstat 1.7.2
  by David Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/dleonard/)
  Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 23:46

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: pktstat listens to the network and shows the bandwidth being
consumed by packets of various kinds in realtime. It understands some
protocols (including FTP, HTTP, and X11) and adds a descriptive name next
to the entry (e.g., 'RETR cd8.iso', 'GET http://slashdot.org/' or 'xclock
-fg blue').

Changes: This version includes a -p flag to show packet counts (instead of
bits/bytes), a -P flag to disable promiscuous mode, a '-A none' option to
disable loading of the default abbreviation files, and a SUP protocol
decoder. The '?' toggled help line no longer times out. The time when an
interface goes down is now displayed and held. Decoding of some unknown
ethernet frames was improved, minor display fixes were made, the tag and
description limits were increased for wide windows, and the documentation
was improved with some examples.

[092] - YASM 0.2.1
  by linux (http://freshmeat.net/users/brainless/)
  Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 03:02

Software Development :: Assemblers
Software Development :: Compilers
System

About: YASM is a complete rewrite of the NASM assembler. It is designed
from the ground up to allow for multiple syntaxes to be supported (e.g.,
NASM, TASM, GAS, etc.) in addition to multiple output object formats.
Another primary module of the overall design is an optimizer module.

Changes: This version adds support for NASM-like -I and -P options to the
preprocessor to specify include directories and pre-included files
respectively. A number of issues with libtool/libltdl and module building
were fixed. The "real" NASM preprocessor is now the default preprocessor.
