About: abcde is a frontend to cdparanoia, wget, cd-discid, id3, and your
favorite Ogg/MP3/Flac encoder (Oggenc is the default). It grabs an entire
CD and converts each track to Ogg/MP3/Flac, then comments or ID3-tags each
file, all with one command. It supports multiple output in a single CD
read, volume normalization, gapless encoding (with Lame), parallelization,
SMP, HTTP proxies, customizable filename organization and munging,
playlist generation, and remote distributed encoding via distmp3.

Changes: A problem with eject has been corrected in this version, and
there are new parts in the documentation about the OUTPUTTYPE variable.
Some more bugs have been fixed.

  by Daniel Silverstone (http://freshmeat.net/users/kimballkinnison/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 04:07

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML

About: Aranha is a piece of software written to allow Web applications to
be written more cleanly and more easily. It is a Local FastCGI Responder,
although work is in progress to allow it to work as a FastCGI Authoriser
and a FastCGI Filter. It is based on the programming language Lua, and
contains many extensions to enable easy Web site development and
maintenance.

Changes: In this release, several bugs have been fixed regarding the
interaction between the codecache and the module loader. The DBI interface
has gained a connection cache (currently undocumented but fairly obvious
to use). The module loader now features a better error reporter and there
is the beginnings of a new documentation system in place.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Axualize is a tool for creating applications by actualizing Java
objects using XML. Axualize is based on JSR-57, and is intended to allow
developers to create Java applications dynamically using XML. To
understand how this could be useful, imagine a J2EE application with
multiple client UIs being generated from Web applications. Using Axualize,
you can present multiple form-based GUI front ends to your application by
dropping in a Web application which builds your GUI applications using
Axualize XML generated with JSP and whatever application framework you
please.

Changes: The "load-classes" tag handler is now more flexible, allowing for
multiple arguments. The "proxy" tag is now more flexible, allowing better
parameter class resolution. Some debugging code which should not have made
it into the release was removed.

Communications :: File Sharing
Database
Internet

About: Babeldoc is a framework and set of applications to process
documents for business-to-business and other Internet/integration
applications. It is primarily intended for text documents, especially XML,
but supports a wide range of operations and data types. It has a
sophisticated journaling system that supports replaying and reprocessing.
Babeldoc is pipeline based and supports numerous ways to combine the
pipeline stages in a dynamically reconfigurable fashion. It has a GUI and
a Web-based console for document processing and monitoring, and comes with
tools for the tranformation of flatfile data to XML, archival, and
cryptography. Additionally it is able to scan various data sources based
on sophisticated constraints.

Changes: There are many small bugfixes, including some defensive code in
the resource loading. Javadoc changes throughout the codebase. The GUI
module has been added, and there are small changes to the dependancy
codes. More work has been done on the devguide. The Web page is linked to
the actual code.

[011] - Bifrost Firewall iptables GUI 0.9.3-cb1 (Beta)
  by Martin Forest (http://freshmeat.net/users/mforest/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 05:19

Internet
Security
System :: Networking

About: Bifrost is a firewall management interface to iptables (iptables
GUI). The system is inspired by Checkpoint, Cisco PIX, and Watchguard
firewall management. With Bifrost you are able to work with incoming and
outgoing traffic flows rather than focusing on interfaces. The system
supports both IPSEC and High Availability. It is even possible to manage
HA from the GUI. Bifrost has an advanced anti-spoofing function. There is
also a very easy-to-use log watch function where you can apply filtering.
Logging is controlled per rule. You can turn on/off logging for a rule on
the fly, and there is built-in protection against log flooding. All
firewall changes are made without interrupt already established
connections. There is also support for traffic marking (mangle), very
useful when you are working with QOS (bandwidth management) and advance
routing such as policy-based routing. If you for some reason need
something extra, it is possible to add your own commands.

Changes: This release experimentally adds shading and color coding to the
logging. All green text is "ACCEPT" i.e. allowed traffic. Red text is
traffic that is either "DROP" or "REJECT". When the background color is
changed to a yellow, the corresponding rule is set to use “FW-A”, i.e.
alerting. All colors will be customizable.

[013] - CheckBook Tracker 0.9.6
  by Tony Maro (http://freshmeat.net/users/tonymaro/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 16:33

Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting

About: In order to leave Windows behind most people need a
fully-functional money management program. CheckBook Tracker seeks to
solve that problem. It has the feel and features of packages like
Microsoft Money without requiring the user to build their own sources or
find an RPM for their distribution. Its features include Import / Export
QIF files straight from Money or Quicken, autocomplete, check printing,
split transactions, balance forecasts and more.

Changes: New sorting options and user selectable font were added for
register. The forecast graph will now popup a date balance according to
mouse location. Keyboard shortcuts were added, alon with duplicate check
number prevention. Several bugs were fixed, including sound-related
crashes and minor user interface glitches.

[014] - Class::Date 1.1.6
  by dLux (Balázs Szabó) (http://freshmeat.net/users/dlux/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 14:16

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Class::Date provides a date datatype for Perl. You can create new
Class::Date objects with a constructor from different scalar formats,
array refs, and hash refs, and then you can easily manipulate it by the
builtin "+" and "-" operators (e.g., $date=date([2001,03,15])+'3Y 1s').
Relative date types also available.

Changes: A new configuration variable, NOTZ_TIMEZONE, has been introduced.
The module now removes the TZ environment variable if the timezone of the
date is the same as NOTZ_TIMEZONE. This way, the module tries to mimic the
behaviour of Class::Date 1.0.x, so that it can work (partially) on systems
with broken TZ handling.

About: CUT is a unit-testing framework for C, C++, and Objective-C. Unlike
other unit testing tools, CUT doesn't strive to be an SUnit clone. It
automates a lot of the drudge work often encountered when using other unit
testing packages for the C family of programming languages. CUT may also
be used to unit-test assembly language software in some circumstances.

Changes: This version returns the correct error code to the shell

  Monday, March 17th 2003 09:43

Software Development :: Version Control
Software Development :: Version Control :: CVS

About: CVSps is a program for generating 'patchset' information from a CVS
repository. A patchset in this case is defined as a set of changes made to
a collection of files, and all committed at the same time (using a single
'cvs commit' command). This information is valuable to seeing the big
picture of the evolution of a cvs project. CVSps allows you to see history
of committed patchsets, restrict by author, date range, files affected,
branches affected. CVSps can generate a diff of a given patchset.

Changes: Strange tagging situations are now handled more robustly. The
semantics for the -s option were changed. A new -g option was added for
generating diffs. The documentation and usage info were cleaned up.

  Monday, March 17th 2003 06:03

Internet
Utilities

About: dailystrips is a utility to download your favorite online comic
strips each day. What sets it apart from the rest is its "local" mode of
operation, which automatically downloads strips for you. Avantgo is also
supported, for downloading comics to PDAs.

Changes: This version is a major update over the last version, fixing a
number of strips and adding over 200 new ones. The total number of
supported strips is now 546.

[021] - Damascus 0.9
  by Abraham Egnor (http://freshmeat.net/users/aegnor/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 14:02

Communications :: Chat
Security :: Cryptography

About: Damascus is a GTK+ 2.x client for the Gale communication protocol.
It is somewhat modelled after IM/ICQ-style interfaces. If you don't know
what Gale is, this client probably won't be very useful; you need a valid
Gale key to send anything, and Damascus can't generate them (yet). Gale is
also scary and confusing.

Changes: Thumbnail images of senders have been added.

[022] - Dasher 3.0.1
  by Matthew Garrett (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjg59/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 09:18

Utilities

About: Dasher is an information-efficient text-entry interface, driven by
natural continuous pointing gestures. It is a competitive text-entry
system wherever a full-size keyboard cannot be used--on a palmtop or
wearable computer, when operating a computer one-handed, by joystick,
touchscreen, trackball, or mouse, or when operating a computer with zero
hands (i.e., by head-mouse or by eyetracker).

Changes: The default alphabet was reordered for ease of use. API
documentation was added. The font size is now changeable. Flicker was
reduced. A one-dimensional input mode was introduced. Logical position of
the mouse pointer can be displayed. Various settings' persistence issues
were fixed. Prediction was improved. Experimental GTK2 code was added.

[023] - Dia 0.91
  by Lars Clausen (http://freshmeat.net/users/lrclause/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 09:54

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based

About: Dia is a program for creating diagrams of all kinds. The current
version can do UML class diagrams, Entity-Relationship modeling, network
diagrams, and much more. The engine is very flexible and dynamically loads
diagram-types from disk. It can currently export to PostScript and
load/save in an XML format.

Changes: GTK 2.0 is now used. FreeType or Windows native fonts are now
used instead of X font services, improving display/print similarity. Some
usability improvements were made. More objects handle default settings
(double-clicking the icon). The renderer backends were redone, so the
process of making a renderer is much easier, yet more powerful. Better
arrows that don't overshoot lines and an autosave feature was added. More
exporters were added (XSLT, JPEG, PNG). Python scripting was improved.
Comments may now be attached to UML classes. Many new shapes were added,
including over 200 Cisco shapes. Support for animated objects was added.
Many, many bugs were fixed.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio

About: Disc-cover provides an easy way to produce covers for audio CDs. It
scans audio CDs and uses information from the CDDB or CDINDEX database to
build a back and front cover for the CD. Output is in Latex, Dvi, PDF,
Postscript, HTML, plain ASCII, or any other format suited for cdlabelgen.

Changes: A start has been made to use templates for creating covers. These
templates are written in simple LaTeX. All the previously available cover
types are included as templates, plus an additional type for audio
casettes. The online version is enhanced, and has an additional script to
be used by Web sites linking to the online version.

  by Jan-Ĺke Larsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalar/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 03:59

Text Processing :: Markup :: LaTeX

About: This program makes PNG graphics from DVI files as obtained from TeX
and its relatives. Its benefits include speed; it is the fastest
bitmap-rendering code for DVI files. On a fairly low-end laptop, it takes
less than a second to generate 150 one-formula images. Furthermore, it
does not read the postamble, so it can be started before TeX finishes.
There is a -follow switch that makes dvipng wait at EOF for further
output, unless it finds the POST marker that indicates the end of the DVI.
It supports PK and VF fonts, color specials, and more.

[030] - Emdros 1.1.10.fix1
  by Ulrik Petersen (http://freshmeat.net/users/ulrikp/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 05:02

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Documentation
Information Management

About: Emdros is a text database engine for annotated or analyzed text. It
is applicable in linguistics, publishing, text processing, and other
fields dealing with annotated text. Emdros has a powerful query language
for asking relevant questions of the data. It is middleware, acting as a
layer between a client (written by the user), and an underlying database.
PostgreSQL and MySQL are supported.

Changes: libpcre_emdros.a was not installed in 1.1.10 on Unix/Linux. This
caused an inability to link against libmql. (Note that the Win32 build of
1.1.10 did not have this bug.) Also, this release fixes a few bugs related
to topographic queries. Users are encouraged to upgrade if on Unix/Linux,
but otherwise there is no real need, unless you are experiencing problems
with topographic queries.

[031] - EMS MySQL Manager 1.1.5.1
  by EMS HiTech (http://freshmeat.net/users/DKovt/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 09:50

Database :: Front-Ends

About: EMS MySQL Manager provides powerful tools for MySQL Server
administration and object management. Its Graphical User Interface (GUI)
allows you to create/edit all MySQL database objects in a simple and
direct way, run SQL scripts, manage users and administer user privileges,
execute SQL queries, extract, print, and search metadata, and
export/import data. It also supplies many more services that will make
your work with the MySQL server as easy as it can be.

Changes: In the Export Data Dialog, the ability to export to PDF was
added. The possibility of customizing navigation links for multi-file
export and defining a background picture for the table were added to the
HTML exporting options. The Import Data Wizard now allows you to define an
action to be executed with the concurrent records in the source file and
the target table: update, delete, insert only new, and more. The ability
to choose between insert or append as the way to add data to the
destination table was added to the Import Data Wizard.

  Monday, March 17th 2003 16:17

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The gnetload network load meter is a network and ISDN load meter
that is similar to xisdnload, but works in a distributed environment. It
includes an agent (devstata) that runs on machines with interfaces to be
monitored and periodically sends status information over the network. A
display program (gnetload) collects and displays the data. Both can be
run on the same machine, or be used to report on the state of a
dedicated router on another machine. Using multicast or broadcast
addresses, data can be fed to more than one instance of gnetload. A menu
for taking network interfaces up and down is also provided.

Changes: An additional argument was added to gnetload to set the multicast
listening device. Linux 2.5 needs this. The Makefile now automatically

  Monday, March 17th 2003 23:28

Communications :: File Sharing
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: GNUnet is a peer-to-peer framework with focus on providing
security. All link-to-link messages in the network are confidential and

[057] - Jay's Iptables Firewall 0.9.91 (Development)
  by Jerome Nokin (http://freshmeat.net/users/jnokin/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 06:22

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Jay's Iptables Firewall is a bash script that allows one to easily
install and configure a firewall on a Linux system. It was initially
written for use on a home LAN, but can be extend to any type of network.
It features support for multiple (external/internal) interfaces,
TCP/UDP/ICMP header control, masquerading, synflood control, spoofing
control, port forwarding, (experimental) upload limits, VPNs (like vtun),
ToS (bandwith managment), denying hosts, ZorbIPTraffic, Spyware list IP,
log options, and more. The firewall is able to launch custom iptables
rules, and the configuration of the firewall is assisted by an optional,
interactive, curses-based Perl script.

Changes: The TCP/UDP forward support is now able to select the incoming
interface(s) for each ports forwarded. An exclusion option was added for
block-ip files (for denying an entire subnet, except for specific hosts).
MAC address blocking file support has been added, which works like the
files for blocking IP addresses, but can only deny a host from the source
address MAC. An option for reloading the blocking IP/MAC address files
without restarting the firewall was added. The structure of the FORWARD
chain has been rewritten. Pre/Post script support has been added.

[063] - LFT 2.1
  by MainNerve (http://freshmeat.net/users/mainnerve/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 10:51

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: LFT (formerly FFT) is an alternative traceroute program for
displaying the route packets take to an IP network host/socket. Unlike Van
Jacobson's traceroute, which is available on almost every platform today,
LFT uses TCP in order to elicit ICMP TIME_EXCEEDEDs or other IP route
data. As a result, LFT often executes much faster and sees behind some
configurations of firewalls. Its stateful engine lets the user know when
it encounters a stateful firewall or other interesting conditions. It also
does AS number and netblock name lookups en route. Most importantly, LFT
can trace specific TCP-based protocol routes (not just IP) to assist
network engineers with manual fault isolation of network application
problems.

Changes: This release supports Windows via Cygwin. Many build problems are
now fixed, and autoconf support has been added. WHOIS parsing code has
been updated to work better with RIPE and RADB and the -V (verbose) option
has been streamlined to show the actual packet transactions in a
simplified output.

[065] - Linux 2.2.25 (2.2)
  by Mathias Schindler (http://freshmeat.net/users/presroi/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 14:07

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Linux is a clone of the Unix kernel, written from scratch by Linus
Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the
Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance. It
has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix
kernel, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries,
demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory
management, and TCP/IP networking.

Changes: The Linux 2.2 and Linux 2.4 kernels have a flaw in ptrace. This
hole allows local users to obtain full privileges. Remote exploitation of
this hole is not possible. Linux 2.5 is not believed to be vulnerable.
This release fixes the flaw, and contains no other changes. The bugfixes
that would have been in 2.2.5pre1 will now appear in 2.2.26pre1. The patch
will apply directly to most older 2.2 releases.

  Monday, March 17th 2003 09:27

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security

About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to protect
Windows clients from viruses. However, it can do many other kinds of mail
processing, such as replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding
boilerplate disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts
of a MIME message according to a very flexible configuration file. It can
also bounce messages with unacceptable attachments. MIMEDefang works with
Sendmail 8.11/8.12's new "Milter" API, which makes it more flexible and
efficient than procmail-based approaches.

Changes: Two additional virus scanners (F-Risk's FPROTD and Symantec
CarrierScan Server) are now supported. MIMEDefang now performs better, and
is more scalable on large and busy mail servers. A new
remove_redundant_html_parts() removes HTML versions from

[088] - PSMON 1.0.1
  by perlguy (http://freshmeat.net/users/suicidebyteddy/)
  Monday, March 17th 2003 10:54

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: psmon is a Perl script which can be run as a stand-alone program or
a fully functional background daemon, capable of logging to syslog with
customisable email notification facilities. The user defines a set of
rules in an Apache-style plain text configuration file. These rules
describe what processes should always be running on the system, and any
limitations on concurrent instances, TTL, and maximum CPU/memory usage of
processes. psmon scans the UNIX process table and, using the set of rules
defined in the configuration file, will respawn any dead processes, and
slay or "deal with" any aggressive or illegal processes.

Changes: An isnumeric() function has been added to cope with potentially
non-numeric output from the config and process table scan when numeric is
expected. The GNU license and headers have been added to files in order to
be GNU compliant for release on Savannah.

About: QuickRip is a basic DVD ripper for GNU/Linux written in Python and
PyQt. It lacks options to fine-tune how you want to rip your DVD, but it
makes ripping quick and easy, and so is ideal for those who aren't
bothered about framerates, clipping, and other unecessary options. It uses
mplayer and transcode to retrieve DVD info and rip the tracks.

Changes: The user is able to set options per-track. frameno.avi and
divx2pass.log are now reliably deleted at appropriate times. The "Stop"
button will actually stop process and clear any zombie processes, Various
other code cleanups were also made which makes it easier to continue

  Monday, March 17th 2003 18:48

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Systems Administration

About: Scylla Charybdis lets you get a data odyssey done with the help of
two small monsters. It's easy to use, utilizes SSL (encryption), LIBZ
(compression), and simple password protection. A builtin timeout detects
link breaks (for dialups) such that an uploads can be automatically
continued from where it broke (within a file). MD5 sums detect if files
are successfully transferred. In case of data changes the destination is
renamed and not overwritten (backup history). Data throttling can prevent
the transfer from using up full link speed, such that a background upload
does not disturb your SSH sessions (like SCP does).

Changes: A bug which appeared on missing files in file streaming mode has
been fixed. There now is a first raw version of Odysseus to gather file
stats, so that in the future it will be possible to restore the full
filesystem structure, not only file contents.

Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: xNeoterics is a cellular automaton simulation containing agents
with fixed-structure neural net brains that process input signals into
responses allowing the agents to forage and interact in a changing
environment of resources. The nets' weights and thresholds evolve via
standard genetic operators (mutation, crossover, etc.) while they try to
survive and reproduce by ingesting enough "energy" to survive.
