Making Presentations with LaTeX and Prosper
by Rajarshi Guha (http://jijo.cjb.net/)
Section: Tutorials
Saturday, December 28th 2002 00:00

A number of dedicated presentation programs have been written for Unix
systems, but they may not serve your needs if you have special
requirements, especially the need to display mathematical formulas. The
Prosper package can help you create attractive presentations while letting
you use the full power of LaTeX.

[001] - ALSA Patch Bay 0.4
  by Bob Ham (http://freshmeat.net/users/node/)
  Saturday, December 28th 2002 21:42

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI

About: ALSA Patch Bay is a small GUI version of ALSA's aconnect, a utility
to connect and disconnect two existing ports on an ALSA sequencer system.

Changes: This version includes a nice plugin system for GUIs and drivers,
LADCCA support, major amounts of code cleaning up and separating,
bugfixes, compilation fixes, listening to ALSA changes in a thread, and
the GTK GUI now uses a proper toolbar with stock buttons.

System :: Logging

About: Apache-logViewSQL is a PHP frontend for mod_log_sql (formerly
mod_log_mysql) which supports live viewing of Apache log data via MySQL.
It provides the ability to drill down on live data as it comes in, and it
also integrates with geoIP databases.

Changes: This release adds a number of user requested features such as
intelligent table detection and summary statistics. There have also been
cleanups to the SQL as well as an extended breakdown of requests on the
main summary screen.

About: Autocomp is an accompaniment generator for Perl and Csound. It
takes as input a text file containing chord changes, plus time signature
and bpm information, and outputs a Csound .sco file containing a simple
arrangement of those changes. A sample Csound .orc file containing a bass
instrument, a selection of keyboard instruments, and a small sample-based
drumkit is provided.

Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor

About: Avidemux is a graphical tool to edit AVI. It allows you to
multiplex and demultiplex audio to/from video. It is able to cut video,
import BMP, MJPEG, and MPEG video, and encode them. You can also process
video with included filters. It requires divx4linux and GTK/GDK.

Changes: This release adds a new filter to include subtitles, more
commandline options, direct display of filter ouput, and more bitrates for
audio encoding. Lavcodec has been upgraded to 0.4.6. Divx is no longer
mandatory. FFmpeg is now the default decoder (all the bugs have been
fixed).

About: BBclone is a PHP Web counter on steroids which displays individual
logs as well as aggregated data. It is a clone of Big Brother webstats,
except that it is written in PHP and it relies only on flat files (no
database needed). BBclone enables any Web site administrator to have a
very precise view of who visit the website: OS, browser, date, referring
page etc. Main features include reload resistance, hostname resolution,
proxy workaround, and blacklist.

Changes: BBClone is now W3C compliant (HTML and CSS), there are new
translations (Chinese, Swedish, etc.), languages can be selected on the
fly in the navigation bar by visitors, there is new browser, OS, and
robots detection, and there were several bugfixes.

About: bosdl is a client for Boss Ogg based on the SDL. It features
TrueType fonts, album covers, and a progress meter.

Changes: This version adds screen blanking code so it won't eat CPU cycles
when it's not doing anything. The XML parser was mostly rewritten so that

  Saturday, December 28th 2002 12:22

About: Boss Ogg is a Postgres-based client/server ogg player, targeted at
entertainment centers, and people that want to use their spare computer
for full-time music. The idea is to have other people develop all sorts of
different clients for it, but the author is also developing an SDL client
simultaneously, which is perfect for a TV-out card.

Changes: This is a major rewrite of the server using SDL_sound which
brings MP3 support. It is also faster and less processor intensive than
before. This release is meant to be a stepping stone to more features and
more timely releases.

  by tschroed (http://freshmeat.net/users/tschroed/)
  Saturday, December 28th 2002 18:12

Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules

About: db-backed is a Ruby library providing a convenient mechanism for
describing objects bound to a backing database. This relieves the
programmer from much of the tedium associated with writing programs with
DB access. Instead of spending a lot of time working on code that reads
data from the database, code that stuffs it into useable objects,
remembering whether a particular piece of data lives in the database or
not, etc., db-backed allows the programmer to simply design their
database schema (with a few constraints), and write a very simple class
definition which describes the mapping between database fields, class
methods, and foreign key mappings.

Changes: Classes can now be declared cacheable. All instantiations by
record_id will pass through cache (fetchAll(), random(), and backref
fetches will not, though the results will be cached for future use as
previously explained).

About: DBConnect API is an easy to use C++ object API to allow
applications to connect to DBMSs. The API currently implements msql,
MySQL, Oracle8, ODBC, and PostgreSQL drivers in the Unix environments and
MySQL, Oracle8, and ODBC in the Windows environment.

Changes: This release is a total rewrite of the DBConnect API introducing
features such as thread-safe code, connection pooling, better type
conversion including a date object, and database drivers implemented as
dynamic libraries (SO's) that can be upgraded, loaded, and unloaded on
demand.

  by arisTo (http://freshmeat.net/users/ar1sT0/)
  Saturday, December 28th 2002 12:37

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: eDonkey-monitor collects data of some central aspects of an eDonkey
server or client and presents this data in form of detailed time-graphs
over a lean but visual appealing Web interface. It features detailed stats
for donkey workload (upload /download) and active peer connections, totals
for workload traffic, high resolution, multi-dimensional graphs, and the
ability to show stats for the last 12 hours, two days, week, or month
(other time windows are possible).

Changes: An empty graph bugfix was made. The netstat part of the
collector-script did not work on some systems; an alternative method which
utilizes "lsof" was added to hopefully fix these problems. Some minor code
enhancements were made to provide more stability, and minor visual changes
were also made.

About: UnixODBC.pm provides Perl programs with a subset of the X/Open ODBC
API to the EasySoft unixODBC DBMS libraries, as well as a peer to peer API
for querying ODBC data sources on networked systems. In addition, it
provides peer client and server scripts and configuration files, sample
clients that perform ODBC queries on local and networked systems, and two
multi-host data managers: one that uses Apache and CGI to provide a Web
browser interface, and another that uses Perl/Tk.

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: whatsnewfm is a filter for the daily freshmeat newsletter. It shows
only news items that you haven't seen before (so you don't have to read
about every update of applications that you aren't interested in). You can
also set up a list of "interesting" applications where you want to be
informed of every update.

Changes: In this version, the location and name of configuration file can
now be changed. Small documentation updates have been made.
