[001] - Arch Linux 0.4 (Development)
  by Judd Vinet (http://freshmeat.net/users/apeiro/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 08:51

System
System :: Operating System
System :: Systems Administration

About: Arch Linux is an i686-optimized Linux distribution. It is
lightweight and contains the latest stable versions of software. Packages
are in .tar.gz format and are tracked by a package manager that is
designed to allow easy package upgrades. Arch is quite streamlined
compared to some other distributions. Things that are relatively unused
are not kept (info pages, for example). A default Arch install leaves you
with a solid base; from there, you can add packages to create the custom
installation you're looking for. Arch has a package build system that
allows you to easily create your own packages, which makes it very easy to
rebuild a package with your own custom configuration. Arch also aims to
use the newer features available to Linux users, such as reiserfs/ext3 and
devfs.

Changes: NFS mounts were added to the init scripts. The install script was
improved. The install CD layout was modified to run from an initrd. The
rc.d scripts were modified to kill with .pid files or pidof. rc.sysinit
now handles UTC times (user patch). Module depenencies are only updated if
required. All packages were rebuilt with gcc 3.2. pacman now supports
multiple servers and respositories.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development

About: Ariadne is a multi-language Web Application Server and Content
Management System built with PHP. It has a rich user interface which
includes wizards, pulldown menus, and a WYSIWYG HTML editor. Data is
stored in a structured object store and can be accessed via
filesystem-like calls (ls, find, get). It supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, and
MSSQL.

Changes: This release fixes a number of problems. The PostgreSQL store now
uses tableprefixes. The PostgreSQL find() uses 'limit' and 'offset'. The
axstore cleans up after updating an ax. QUERY_STRING is read from
HTTP_SERVER_VARS, for IIS compatibility. This release also adds some new
features, including a French translation, NLS support for the WYSIWYG
editor, and unique naming for windows opened by the menu.

About: BHL is an Emacs mode that enables you to convert brut text files
into HTML, LaTeX, and SGML (Linuxdoc) files. The BHL mode handles common
font-styles, three levels of sections, any kind of lists, URLs and
horizontal rules. BHL handles a table of contents: you can browse the toc,
insert the toc where you want, and update the sections' numbers with one
keystroke.

Printing

About: CDox generates, edits, and prints CD documents like CD covers, back
sides and booklets. It features many image processing options like
sharpen, contrast, etc. One can use images and text as elements, and those
elements can be flipped/rotated/resized in any way. The program has
easy-to-use features for previously made images that are meant to be CD
covers.

Changes: This is the final 1.0 release. This release fixes a printing bug
which apparently only took place on very fast computers, and also features
some small enhancements. Upgrading is recommended.

[009] - Cluster Installation Finishing Scripts 2.3
  by Joe Landman (http://freshmeat.net/users/landman/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 20:03

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: The Finishing Scripts for Cluster Installations handle specific
post-installation configuration that might not be convienent nor possible
using existing cluster installation methods. The usual installation
process is used to build a reasonably configured node, and the system then
reboots into normal mode, achieves network visibility, and executes the
finishing script. The finishing script handles all of the finer details of
installing packaged or non-packaged software, tweaking installation,
setting host/net specific parameters/files, etc. It is controlled via a
single, easily modified script.

Changes: The run script now executes all the scripts in a directory,
rather than being a monolithic script with all the functionality within
it. This allows for a finer grain control over the process. All the
finishing scripts are located in /opt/finishing/finishing.d . A new
executable was added to that directory will include it in the finishing
script processing. Logging has been vastly improved. The run script itself
has been rewritten in Perl, to prepare for future enhancements.

[011] - DAXFi 1.0
  by Davide Alberani (http://freshmeat.net/users/alberanid/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 13:35

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Systems Administration

About: DAXFi is a Python script that helps configure several different
kinds of firewalls in a consistent way. It can run as daemon to adapt its
behavior to external conditions; rules can be described with XML files,
XML strings, or generated directly by the code; the program can be
configured and extended with a sort of plug-ins written in Python. It
comes with a Python package, useful to build other applications aimed to
manipulate different firewalls in a uniform way (some example programs are
included).

Changes: User defined chains and chain policies were introduced. The pyXML
package is no longer required, and the SAX API is used instead of DOM,
with noticeable performance improvement. Now two rules can be merged using
the XOR operator. The daxfidump script can write the output to a single
file. Many bugs were fixed.

for members to submit news/content and write reviews, and much more.

Changes: A HTML code bug in the member inbox was fixed along with a
language selection bug in the install script, a file not found error in
Turkish installations, a JavaScript error in the scrolling announcements,
and a problem with lost passwords. A banner redirect page and a forum

  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 21:33

Software Development

About: Developer Todo is a program to assist developers in maintaining a
list of outstanding tasks in a heirarchical, colourised, and prioritised
list. Additionally, it can automatically list outstanding items when you
change into a directory.

Changes: This version modifies the semantics for expanding indices so that
an index with no modifiers expands only one level deep, adds support for
multi-line items and title text, and fixes a bug where broken links would
fail badly, requiring manual editing of the .todo file.

  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 05:49

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers

About: DOM Menu allows developers to add dynamic, hierarchical popup
menus to Web pages. Menus can be horizontal or vertical and can open or
pop out in either direction. It features screen edge and element
detection for browsers that cannot hide form elements. Styles are
controlled almost entirely using CSS, and the menus are created and
hidden using the Document Object Model. Configuration is performed using
a custom Hash() class. The menus emulate the look and feel of well known
GUI toolkits. Mozilla, IE 5+ and Opera 7 are supported.

[015] - DOM Tooltip 0.4.9
  by Dan Allen (http://freshmeat.net/users/mojavelinux/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 19:47

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: DOM Tooltip allows developers to add customized tooltips to Web
pages. The tooltips are controlled through style class definitions and
respond to events on the page, such as "mouseover" events. When creating
dynamic layers, it detects possible collisions with form elements (such as
select boxes, which float above the HTML surface) and screen edge
bleeding. While it was originally designed to simply create context
tooltips, it has grown into a significantly more versatile script. It is
now possible to create a wide variety of dynamic layers, such as embedded
windows, context menus, and hidden blocks. Additional features include
sticky tips, tooltip fading, lifetime, relative positioning, class
assignments, width adjustments, mouse dragging, captions, directionality,
offset adjustments, adjustable activate/deactivate delay times, snapping
to grid, fate adjustment (hide or destroy), and references to created
tips. It supports Mozilla/Netscape6+, IE 5.5+, Konqueror, and Opera (only
Opera7, which includes full DOM and CSS2 support).

Changes: Select elements now retain visibility only when all tooltips
which obstruct them (not just the current one) have moved away. Tooltips
are now draggable in Konqueror. Two tooltips can be triggered on the same
event if the 'id' option is used. A global mousemove bug was fixed in IE.
Lots of other code cleanups, bugfixes, and improvements were made.

[016] - Dropline GNOME 1.3.1
  by Todd Kulesza (http://freshmeat.net/users/tdk/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 23:17

Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: Dropline GNOME is a version of the GNOME Desktop that has been
tweaked for Slackware Linux systems. It is available in Slackware's
standard .tgz package format, in addition to the usual source code. The
current release is based off of the latest GNOME 2 distribution from the
GNOME Project.

Changes: This version updates Xft, FontConfig, GAim, GConf-Editor, GFTP,
GStreamer, LibXML, RhythmBox, MonkeyMedia, PkgConfig, VTE, Xine-Lib, and
Xine-UI packages to the latest official versions. It updates the Dropline
Installer to remove older installation files. It adds the BlueFish HTML
editor, the MusicBrainz library for RhythmBox, the OGG-Vorbis 1.0 codec,
the GKrellM system monitor, and the Totem Movie Player, a GNOME front-end
for Xine. It rebuilds Mozilla to correct the version displayed in the
"About" dialog, and rebuilds GNOMEMeeting to include the GConf schema.

  by Half-Dead (http://freshmeat.net/users/Half/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 04:35

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: E-Xoops is a content management system written mainly in object
oriented PHP. It includes everything you'd expect from a portal system,
including downloads, links, sections, polls, forum, news, a FAQ, RSS
feeds, members lists, and customizable blocks and themes. It also
integrates XMLRPC and the ability to manage users as groups with module-
or block-specific access permissions.

Changes: Management of the administration area was simplified by the
addition of a multiple upload function. The mailer now supports
attachments, HTML and text, receipts, and more. The banners are more
customizable, and HTML, JavaScript, Flash, or normal rotations are
supported, with the ability to assign blocks in groups. Line wrapping made
by WYSIWYG editors is now fixed. It is now possible to deny different tag
groups for users and admins. A global site cache has increased speed
dramatically.

[025] - FireHOL R5 v1.52
  by Costa Tsaousis (http://freshmeat.net/users/ktsaou/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 19:55

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: FireHOL is an iptables firewall generator, producing stateful
packet-filtering firewalls. Its goal is to be completely abstracted and
easy to use, audit, and understand. It provides the means to have
consistent and simple firewalls for Linux hosts and routers with any
number of interfaces. It is pre-configured for a large number of services,
and you can configure it to support any service you like. All the services
operate in server, client, and router mode and even complex positive and
negative expressions are handled correctly. It also supports a number of
protections: Packet fragments, new TCP without SYN, ICMP Floods, SYN
Floods, and bad TCP Flags.

Changes: This release is mainly a security and bugfixing release. A
potential security hole where an attacker could connect to any UDP port if
in the configuration file there was a "client dns accept" and the attacker
used source port 53, is fixed. A fix was made for a bug in the FTP service
that prevented active FTP from working, NFS service now complains if it
cannot find nfsd or mountd on the server's portmapper, a bug was fixed in
the commandline arguments parsing when an alterate configuration file was
given, and an interactive mode ('explain') was added where iptables rules
generation is shown and explained.

  by Kathryn Andersen (http://freshmeat.net/users/kat/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 04:20

Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML

About: HTML::TextToHTML converts plain text files into HTML. It supports
headings, tables, lists, simple character markup, and hyperlinking, and is

and easy to use.

Changes: The deprecated AppConfig module is no longer required. The
texthyper script is now bundled, and Getopt::Long and Getopt::ArgvFile are
used. The system link dictionary is included with the distribution, and no
additional files are required. Method arguments can now take a hash or an

[054] - N-View 2.4 (Stable)
  by Wolfgang Ullrich (http://freshmeat.net/users/ullrich/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 08:17

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: N-View is a network monitor for small and medium-sized networks. It
features automatic scanning of subnets for host addresses, monitoring of
ICMP responses from all hosts, signalling of timeouts and delays in the
GUI and by mail, a portscanner, an SNMP client (MIB browser and trap
receiver), a graphical display of network traffic for network interfaces,
connectivity to hosts by telnet, HTTP browser, or an arbitrary external
program (such as ssh), printing of network diagrams, automatic generation
of HTML pages, and more.

Changes: The icons to be displayed for subnets and hosts can now be
"customized" by choosing arbitrary GIF, JEPG, or PNG files. A new "Icon
Chooser Dialog" has been added to support this. Chosen images are
displayed in their original size, up to 160x120 pixels. Larger pictures
are automatically resized to fit this frame while keeping their aspect
ratio. Animated GIF files can also be applied.

on the entries are mainly sanity checks like "begin date is in the
weekend". The act of entering a new leave entry sends an email to the
group manager and a copy to the employee. The advantages of this
electronic version over the paper version are: there is a single
information location (no employee-card and mother-card discrepancies),
questionable entries immediately draw the manager's attention (with
email), and various up-to-date views of the leave history are available
(total, year, and list). Verlof is a Dutch-only application and a little
specific to Leiden University.

Changes: This release corrects a programming error that stopped people
with an account from making entries when automatic account creation was
disabled.

[087] - Very Simple Network Monitor 2.0.0 beta (Monitoring)
  by Jan Uyttersprot (http://freshmeat.net/users/tbonesixtynine/)
  Wednesday, December 18th 2002 10:12

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Very Simple Network Monitor is a bash shell script CGI that
monitors a number of services on a network. It currently checks for
node-up, TCP service up, and UDP service up. A service or system can be
put in maintenance status to avoid repetitive alarms. It is easy to
customize, trigger alarms by email, or whatever you like (depends on nmap
for TCP/UDP service checks). Installation is also simple. It generates
HTML with all statuses, and for all services just in one view.

Changes: This is a complete rewrite. It is Web configurable, fully
customizable, and has plugins for checks and alarms. Standard checks
include ping scan, TCP scan, and UDP scan, and standard alarms include
email and Web pages. Configuration, status, and logs are stored in MySQL.
It is entirely written in PHP, except for the plugins, which are in bash.
plugins can be any language, as long as the calling protocol is respected.
