About: Archi´s Homepagehoster Admintool (!aha!) is a HTML based tool which
Web hosting providers can run on their servers. !aha! allows the customers
to administer various features of their hosting accounts.

Changes: An alphabet was included in the email list, which makes it
possible to jump directly to the address's beginning with the selected
chapter. Now it is impossible to allocate a nonexistent account to a
customer. The home directory of an FTP user can be changed. All
sub-domains are included for traffic calculation.

[005] - Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script 1.7.3BETA-2
  by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 03:45

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Arno's IPTABLES firewall script was originally derived from Seven's
(single-homed) IPTABLES script. The biggest differences are that this
script has support for dual-homed machines, support for masquerading
(NAT), support for ethernet ADSL/DSL modems (for both static and
dynamically assigned IPs), support for all IP protocols, and support for
IPSEC (Freeswan). It also features (stealth) portscan detection, extensive
user definable logging with rate limiting to prevent log flooding, port
forwarding, optimizing the throughput of your internet connection,
protection against SYN/ICMP flooding (DoS attacks), and much more. It's
easy to configure and highly customizable. It additionally includes a
filter script (fwfilter) to make your firewall log more readable.

Changes: This version adds support for IPSec, options for fwfilter, new
logging options, and IRC support. It fixes problems with RELATED states,
renames the $FULL_ACCESS_SUBNETS variable to $FULL_ACCESS_HOSTS, fixes the
command-line processing bug, adds a variable $OTHER_IF for "other" network
interfaces for which ALL traffic should be accepted, fixes several port
forwarding bugs, and includes code cleanups and numerous (cosmetic)
bugfixes and changes.

  Monday, December 16th 2002 15:08

Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules

About: db-backed is a Ruby library providing a convenient mechanism for
describing objects bound to a backing database. This relieves the
programmer from much of the tedium associated with writing programs with
DB access. Instead of spending a lot of time working on code that reads
data from the database, code that stuffs it into useable objects,
remembering whether a particular piece of data lives in the database or
not, etc., db-backed allows the programmer to simply design their
database schema (with a few constraints), and write a very simple class
definition which describes the mapping between database fields, class
methods, and foreign key mappings.

Changes: This version adds an installer (install.rb) along with the
ability to count a db-backed class store (Track.count) and the ability to
fetch a random instance (Track.random).

Software Development :: Documentation

About: Doxygen is a cross-platform, JavaDoc-like documentation system for
C++, Java, C, and IDL. Doxygen can be used to generate an on-line class
browser (in HTML) and/or an off-line reference manual (in LaTeX or RTF)
from a set of source files. Doxygen can also be configured to extract the
code-structure from undocumented source files. This includes dependency
graphs, class diagrams and hyperlinked source code. This type of
information can be very useful to quickly find your way in large source
distributions.

Changes: This is the second release candidate for version 1.3. A number of
problems found in the first release candidate have been fixed. A couple of
minor improvements, such as better support for using declarations and
anchors, have been included.

[023] - Emacs/LaTeX inline Preview 0.7.6
  by David Kastrup (http://freshmeat.net/users/dakas/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 19:30

Text Editors :: Emacs
Text Processing :: Markup :: LaTeX

About: The purpose of the preview-latex package is to embed LaTeX
environments such as display math or figures into Emacs source buffers. By
mouse clicking, you can open the original text. After editing, another
click will just run the region in question through LaTeX and redisplay the
new results. It requires version 21.1 or higher of Emacs or XEmacs and AUC
TeX.

Changes: Release 0.7.6 is another consolidation release since AFPL
GhostScript releases 7.x failed with 0.7.5. Treatment of multi-directory
projects has been corrected, but you need at least AUC TeX 11.14 to make
use of it. An added feature can be customized into the new
'preview-required-option-list' variable: checking the 'counters' option
will make it possible to retain correct equation and section numbering
even when you are regenerating single previews. Various bugs have been
fixed and the installation process does a better job of getting things to
work, particularly for Windows users.

About: fastUtil provides type-specific Java maps and sets with a small
memory footprint, which feature much faster (2 to 10 times) access and
insertion. The classes implement their standard counterpart interfaces
(e.g., Map for maps) and can be plugged into existing code.

Changes: Slightly faster hash tables with object keys, and JPackage-like
RPMs.

[025] - Festalon 0.1.2
  by lezindoX (http://freshmeat.net/users/lezindoX/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 21:51

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Festalon is a portable, very accurate NSF (NES Sound Format)
player. All of the basic sound channels are emulated, and support exists
for extra sound channels as found in the VRC6, VRC7, MMC5, FME-7, Namco
106, and FDS (partial). CPU requirements are a bit high. You'll probably
need to have a processor that can perform integer math at or greater than
the speed of a Pentium II 266MHz CPU, and something a little faster if
extra sound chips are used, especially the Namco 106 and FDS.

Changes: The default volume was changed to 175%, the post-down sampling
filters were simplified, and support for 96KHz playback rates was added.
The version number was updated and is now printed on startup. Under WinAMP
an internal volume control track bar was added, and the last played song
is resumed whenever NSF is restarted.

[026] - FireHOL R5 v1.45
  by Costa Tsaousis (http://freshmeat.net/users/ktsaou/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 15:07

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: FireHOL is an iptables firewall generator, producing stateful
packet-filtering firewalls. Its goal is to be completely abstracted and
easy to use, audit, and understand. It provides the means to have
consistent and simple firewalls for Linux hosts and routers with any
number of interfaces. It is pre-configured for a large number of services,
and you can configure it to support any service you like. All the services
operate in server, client, and router mode and even complex positive and
negative expressions are handled correctly. It also supports a number of
protections: Packet fragments, new TCP without SYN, ICMP Floods, SYN
Floods, and bad TCP Flags.

Changes: This release is up to 10 times faster on complex firewall
configurations, enables kernel routing automatically on router
configurations, passes command line arguments to configuration files, has
better control over iptables logging, loads required kernel modules during
runtime, and protects the previous (running) firewall from being modified
from the configuration file. Support has been added for the DHCP Relay,
APTPROXY, APCUPSD, and ISAKMP services. The documentation now includes a
tutorial on how to build a firewall using FireHOL.

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Firepoint Management Server works with fwbuilder to make a more
complete iptables-based Linux firewall system. fwbuilder is a great GUI
for creating iptables-based policy scripts, but in a production
environment, you also need management services. Firepoint handles tasks
like user logins (only one r/w user can be logged in at a time) and policy
promotion.

Changes: This is a new version to go along with fwbuilder 1.0.8. It has a
new feature: if a user leaves off the policy name, he gets the most
recently-installed policy. Docs are improved and expanded.

[043] - Java Serialization to XML 1.0.7.2
  by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 01:40

Communications
Database
Software Development

About: Java Serialization to XML (JSX) allows you to write and read any
Java object graph as XML data with one line of code. You can verify your
data and manipulate it with standard XML tools like DOM, JDOM, and XSLT.
JSX automatically creates a file format/wire protocol for all Java
objects, so that it is always up to date as the code evolves. When you
need backward compatibility, JSX provides the evolution techniques of Java
Object Serialization, and you can also modify the XML directly. Unlike
databinders, such as JAXB and Castor, no explicit mapping is required, and
JSX works for all objects.

Changes: JSX now allows a memento class to be retrofitted for class
evolution: when you need to evolve a class, but it also needs to be
back-compatible with serialized versions, you can now define a memento
class with the same fields as the old version, and JSX will automatically
map the old version into the memento. You need to write a readResolve
method for the memento, which returns an of the new version, based on the
old version.

Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Systems Administration

About: The main goal of the Linux Trustees project is to create an
advanced permission management system for Linux. The solution proposed is
mainly inspired by the approach taken by Novell Netware and the Java
security API. Special objects (called trustees) can be bound to every file
or directory. The trustee object can be used to ensure that access to a
file, directory, or directory with subdirectories is granted (or denied)
to a certain user or group (or all except user or group). Trustees are
like POSIX ACLs, but trustee objects can affect entire subdirectory trees,
while ACLs a single file.

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Lutel Firewall Script is a Linux iptables shell script written in
bash for use as a firewall and NAT/masquerade router for home networks or
multiple subnet applications. It shares access to an Internet connection
from multiple workstations. Its main features are support for interface
aliases, per subnet traffic definitions, UID and GID of packet owner
restrictions, length of packet restrictions, SYN / flood protection,
disabling routing between subnets, masquerading setups per subnet,
transparent proxy support, port redirection, anti-spoof protection, TOS
optimization, predefinied netfilter marking for 3rd party traffic shapers
(such as tc), DHCP support, FTP active and passive mode support, and
ZorbipTraffic.

Changes: This version includes a transparent proxy bugfix so that it now
uses the REDIRECT target rather than DNAT. A new option "nat" allows only
the NAT part of a firewall to run. There were also some code cleanups.

[060] - Mainstreet Credit Verification Engine 2.5.6
  by Brad House (http://freshmeat.net/users/bradh352/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 07:38

Office/Business :: Financial

About: Mainstreet Credit Verification Engine (MCVE) is a scalable Credit
Card Processing Engine for Linux and UNIX. MCVE is designed to handle
credit card authorizations and is certified to support major clearing
house protocols. Features include support for multiple modems, multiple
merchant accounts, and multiple processors, all simultaneously -- as well
as IP and SSL connectivity along side SQL database support. Designed in C,
conforming to POSIX standards, and utilizing light weight processes
(threads), this product is able to handle a large number of transactions
with high speed and minimal CPU usage.

Changes: Modem communication has been improved in two areas. Serial
routines were modified to work better with Portmaster/Terminal servers,
and the modem routines have been rewritten to utilize less CPU time and to
improve error catching/handling. MCVE now makes sure that the reentrant
version of gethostbyname is used on all supported systems. A new secure
logging feature which does not store the entire credit card number was
implemented, so it is now safe to send the log via email to Main Street
support staff if necessary. 64-bit integer fixes were made for FreeBSD and
SCO. Database export of the "internal" database type has been fixed.

About: MiniXML provides a simple API used to generate and parse XML. Its
advantages are ease-of-use and the fact that no additional libraries are
required. The set of classes allows developers to access XML data and
create valid XML output with a tree-based hierarchy of elements. The PHP
and Perl classes are independent and do not require any additional
libraries.

[068] - Moto 0.16.0 (Development)
  by Dave Hakim (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhakim/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 10:16

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: Moto is a server-side scripting language much like PHP or
ColdFusion. The difference between Moto and other server-side scripting
languages is that Moto pages can run interpreted (like PHP) or be natively
compiled into dynamically loadable Apache modules (an entire Web site
could be compiled into one .so file). It comes with a full suite of
objects and functions for state and session management, MySQL and
PostgreSQL database connectivity, and a slew of utility classes like
stacks, hashtables, string buffers, etc. There is also an included
interface definition language for exposing C functions to Moto. All object
allocation occurs in a shared memory segment, so maintaining state in
objects between page views is a snap.

Changes: This release adds exception handling constructs. Exceptions are
now first class objects. The semantics of the try, catch, and finally
constructs are the same as in Java. The MySQL database driver has been
refactored and much improved, adding many new and powerful methods for
working with query results. A number of important bugs have also been
fixed related to the allocation of zero length objects, such as empty
classes or arrays.

Database :: Front-Ends

About: PgAccess is a Tcl/Tk frontend for PostgreSQL. It allows
creation/modification of database, tables, queries, reports, scripts, in a
way similar to the Windows-based db client of the same name.

Changes: This release is the first from development CVS since work began
on releasing 0.98.8 final a couple of months ago. A debug window, image
support, a user group management window, an import wizard, and more form
widgets (BWidget Tree and a Subform) were added. Also included are updates
to the multiple connections support, and of course, all the bugfixes from
the last final release.

[085] - PHP feedParser 0.5 (Development)
  by Reverend Jim (http://freshmeat.net/users/reverendjim/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 14:39

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: feedParser was created due to the lack of a good, flexible,
class-based RSS feed parser for PHP. It has been built as a class, and
currently handles RSS 0.91, RSS 0.92, RSS 0.93, RSS 1.0, and RSS 2.0
feeds. For channels it grabs the title, description, link, and creator.
For items it grabs the title, description, link, and date. It also
provides a form of the date converted into the local timezone to
facilitate cronological sorting of items. The dates are provided in UNIX
timestamp format for easy manipulation by other PHP functions.

Changes: A few more namespaces, making it even more capable.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: PHP LDBI is a library to handle local databases. It supports
tables, sequences, indices, and searches using wildcards. It's primary
goal is to serve as backend for SQL interfaces to local databases. It
includes an SQL parser to execute simple SQL statements.

Changes: This release fixes a lot of bugs, and upgrading is recommended. A
new query parsing method has been implemented. It's now simpler to add
query handlers to the library and the parsing is faster. Support has been
added for <, >, <=, and >= operators. Simple caching of the SELECT query
results has been implemented.

Database :: Front-Ends

About: phpSqlReplicator provides database replication across SQL servers.
It only supports MySQL, but other databases (ORACLE, Sybase, etc.) are
planned in the future. It retrieves databases and tables structures from
the original server and clones them (via SQL statements) to a target
server.

Changes: PostgreSQL is now supported, and it is possible to replicate from
MySQL to PostgreSQL. The table parsing engine was rewritten, a
registration form was added, and minor bugs were corrected.

[090] - pyDDR 0.5.7
  by theGREENzebra (http://freshmeat.net/users/tgz/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 14:40

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation

About: PyDDR is a clone of DDR ("Dance Dance Revolution") written in
Python. The idea of DDR is simple. There's a mat with four directional
arrows, and the game scrolls arrows up the screen to the beat while
playing a song. When the arrows reach the top of the screen (not sooner
and not later), the player hits the corresponding arrow on the pad, and
given that it's hit on time with the beat, points are scored. Based on how
well the dance is put together, s/he is graded at the end of the song.

Changes: The arrow positioning code has been rewritten so BPM changes work
(holds only sort of). Crashing on alternate scrollspeeds should be fixed.
The song selector doesn't take time between songs anymore, it starts
fullscreen with the mouse cursor hidden by default, and buttons defined in
pyddr.cfg now work in grading screen. The game now recaps the framerate
better, and has an option to help those using pyDDR with TVout. Finally, a
STEP2DWI utility is now included.

be simple to use, understand, and hopefully, not too difficult to install.
No database is required.

Changes: This release includes file locking on the playlist file, so
hopefully the rare corruption problem should be gone. There was a $PHP

  by Hendrik Sattler (http://freshmeat.net/users/hsattler/)
  Monday, December 16th 2002 07:31

Communications

About: SCMxx is a console program that allows you to exchange certain
types of data with mobile phones made by Siemens. Some of the data types
that can be exchanged are logos, ring tones, vCalendars, vCards, phonebook
entries, and SMS messages. It works with the following phones: S25, C35i,
M35i, S35i, ME45, S45, SL45, and probably some others, too. It basically
uses the AT command set published by Siemens (with some other additional
resources).

Changes: A phonebook upload bug was fixed. Some more serial device bits
were changed. Reads from the device are now different. A 10 second timeout
for every read was implemented, and the code now makes more use of malloc.

Multimedia :: Video :: Display
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Screen Saver Disabler is a library designed to provide developers
and end users with a very easy way of disabling screen savers. The
library is controlled via a simple config file. Programmers may be
confident that their software is (temporarily) disabling the user's
screensaver without needing for specific programming to support each and
every different screensaver. End users can even link the Screen Saver
Disabler library to any program they wish in order to make sure the
program disables the screen saver whenever it is active. This is
particularly useful for movie players such as MPlayer.

About: Virtual Sound provides unlimited effects and modulation for
sophisticated audio generation, with unique instrument simulation
capabilities to craft your own unique soundscapes. All effects are
parametrized and their parameters may be controlled through the outputs of
other effects, through samples, or through special modulators. Instrument
simulation is based on recursively-linked filter networks. Actual
instruments can also be simulated by learning the filter parameters using
a hidden-control neural network.

Changes: This is the first version that is available to developers. Users
might be disappointed as there is no front-end, but one may still generate
interesting sounds by playing around with the example main in VSound.c.
Take a look at the README for some more details.

[119] - webplay 1.03a (Main)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Webplay creates, from a collection of MP3s and Ogg Vorbis files
(indexed from a directory or MySQL/PostgreSQL database), a Web-based
jukebox with support for multiple independent streams. If Lame/oggenc are
available, it can change the bitrate or codec of a file in real time to a
selectable value. Each user controls their stream via a Web interface and
can skip back, forward, or to a specific track; increment or decrement the
bitrate; and check the current playlist, song, or bitrate. Playlists can
be looped, randomized, played locally on the webserver, edited, deleted,
reused, or renamed.

Changes: This release adds a skin interface to the Javascript client,
support for Mac OS X.2 (Jaguar) as a server, and compresses the cache
files for greatly decreased load times.
