System :: Software Distribution

About: The 2-Disk Xwindow System is a small Linux-2.4 distribution which
includes libc2.1, busybox, tinylogin, e3, pppd, several daemons, X,
alloywm, chimera, xpaint, VNC and rdesktop. The kernel supports UMSDOS,
initrd, floppy, iso9660, PPP, and networking.

Changes: Code cleanups for compilation with uclibc, size reductions, etc.
It now fits on one disk.

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: apachedb logs Apache transfers and Squid log files into an MySQL
database. You can convert an existing transfer log or you can log "on the
fly" via the Apache logging facility. apachedb is easily extensible and
very fast. Currently reports can be generated in real-time with PHP and
once a day with Perl.

Changes: This version adds log2pg, and updates the FAQ.

  by Richard Bos (http://freshmeat.net/users/rjmbos/)
  Sunday, May 19th 2002 10:09

System :: Installation/Setup System :: Software Distribution

About: The superb Debian package installer APT has since some time become
available for RPM-based distributions. However, to install RPM packages
with apt, an apt repository is needed. apt4rpm creates the apt repository
from an RPM repository. The rpm repository can be located locally or
remotely. Once the apt repository has been created with apt4rpm, the apt
tools can be used to install RPMs.

Changes: The apt component information is no longer regenerated in case the
RPM repository has not changed. Bad RPMs are now marked as bad. An
additional output stream was introduced, dividing the progress marker's
stream into 2 streams. A cache consistency check was added, which will
remove cache entries that contain nonexistent directories. The remaining
"old" APT repository was made unreadable for group and others. aptate now
exits and provides an error report if genbasedir does not finish
succesfully. The output produced during the mirror and link actions was
beautified.

[004] - bash programmable completion 20020519
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Sunday, May 19th 2002 14:41

System :: Shells System :: Systems Administration Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all targets
in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable completion
routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the amount of
typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: Python now completes first on a .(py|pyc|pyo) file, then on any
file. scp completion now also completes on host aliases from SSH config
files. Some minor bugs were fixed in Debian package management functions.

[007] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.93 (Stable)
  by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
  Sunday, May 19th 2002 00:34

Communications :: Email Communications :: Email :: Filters Security

About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use a
MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

Changes: This version adds the ability to change the various mailboxes for
Sendmail/Postfix/Exim to a different one from the default. These are
determined at configure time. It also includes maildir fixes, and fixes for
Postfix content filter problems.

[008] - Bubbling Load Monitor Applet 1.2.1
  by Walles (http://freshmeat.net/users/walles/)
  Sunday, May 19th 2002 18:04

Desktop Environment :: Gnome Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: The Bubbling Load Monitor (or "Bubblemon" for short) is a system CPU
and memory load monitor for the GNOME panel. It looks like a vial
containing water. The water level indicates how much (electronic) memory is
in use. The color of the liquid indicates how much swap space is used. The
amount of bubbles reflects the system CPU load.

Changes: This version stays on the panel even if you log out and log back
in again. Also, the wave crests are anti-aliased.

About: Build Folio generates Web pages that lets the user navigate a set of
files and directories. It is very good at generating thumbnailed indexes of
directories containing a lot of images. The way the Web pages are generated
can be controlled via configuration files. The program is built as a Perl 5

  by murlen (http://freshmeat.net/users/murlen/)
  Sunday, May 19th 2002 14:50

Software Development :: Interpreters Software Development :: Libraries

About: FScript is an extremely simple scripting language. Its intended use
is as an embedded language in other Java programs. It is very simple to
embed; it can be as simple as sub-classing one class to add your own
functionality. However, it is not a complete programming language, as it
has no library of standard functions (such as IO and string processing).
FScript supplies base functionality (such as flow control, variable
handling, and basic math operations) that can extended by the host
application. The only requirement is a Java 2 runtime environment.

  Sunday, May 19th 2002 08:34

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)

About: gMUDix is an improved version of MUDix, a MUD client for the Linux
console. It is designed to run as an X application, and was developed with
GTK+ 2.0. gMUDix has all the features of MUDix and more, including ANSI
color mapping, aliasing, macros, paths, tab completions, timers, triggers,
variables, and an easy-to-use script language.

Changes: A left margin was set to improve readability. Quitting the
User-select window will now keep the user window open. Quitting the user
window, however, will re-open the user-select window if it was previously
closed. The last connected user is now selected by default at startup. A
major bug which prevented new users from being added to the user list
properly was fixed. This bug could cause an infinite loop at close on some
occasions. A timer mechanism which allows users to create timers was added.
Miscellaneous minor updates were made.

About: MailScanner is an Email virus scanner and spam tagger. It supports
sendmail and Exim MTAs, and the Sophos, McAfee, F-Prot, F-Secure,
CommandAV, InoculateIT, Inoculan 4.x, and Kaspersky anti-virus scanners. It
supports SpamAssassin for highly successful spam identification. It is
specifically designed to handle Denial Of Service attacks. It is very easy
to install, and requires no changes at all to your sendmail.cf file. It is
designed to be lightweight, and so won't grind your mail system to a halt
with its load.

Changes: An "Always Include SpamAssassin Header" option was added for spam
reports on non-spam messages. A "default" rule was added to the
spam.actions.conf file. A switch to control logging of allowed attachment
filenames was added. Most systems will no longer need "syslogd -r" for
logging to work. The F-Prot parser now handles non-working copies of
viruses. The RPM file now saves config files rather than overwriting them.

[036] - PHP Layers Menu 1.1.6 (Development)
  by Marco Pratesi (http://freshmeat.net/users/pratesi/)
  Sunday, May 19th 2002 18:14

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: PHP Layers Menu is a hierarchical dynamic menu system to rapidly
choose among the items. It works with both PHP3 and PHP4. It achieves a
compact view and a reasonably small file size for the page with a very
large number of entries. Its behaviour is completely analogous to the
Gnome, KDE and MS Windows main menus. You can use as many levels as you
need, and the menu is dynamically generated from the menu structure file.
It supports Mozilla, Netscape 4.x and 6.x, Konqueror, Opera 5 and 6, and
Internet Explorer 4, 5, 5.5, and 6.

Changes: This release can read each menu structure from a string instead of
from a file. It provides methods to choose paths and templates for each
menu, as well as elementary error handling. There is code reorganization
and other undocumented changes and improvements.

[040] - pyDDR 0.5.0
  by theGREENzebra (http://freshmeat.net/users/tgz/)
  Sunday, May 19th 2002 00:00

Games/Entertainment Games/Entertainment :: Simulation

About: PyDDR is a clone of DDR ("Dance Dance Revolution") written in
Python. The idea of DDR is simple. There's a mat with four directional
arrows, and the game scrolls arrows up the screen to the beat while playing
a song. When the arrows reach the top of the screen (not sooner and not
later), the player hits the corresponding arrow on the pad, and given that
it's hit on time with the beat, points are scored. Based on how well the
dance is put together, s/he is graded at the end of the song.

Changes: The announcer code should now work on all machines, but because of
this, pygame 1.4.9 is now required. Arrow judging is now immediate, and
arrows "explode" when greats or perfects are achieved. Music was added for
the song selector and the new loading screen, as well as a new graphics
theme. New options were added for song directory, fps display, mat axes and
buttons, and adjustable hidden mode. Lastly, a few bugfixes were made.
