[001] - 2-Disk Xwindow Linux System 1.0
  by mungkie (http://freshmeat.net/users/mungkie/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 14:39

Category: System :: Software Distribution

About: The 2-Disk Xwindow System is a small Linux distribution which
includes libc2.1, busybox, tinylogin, e3, pppd, several daemons, X,
alloywm, chimera, and xpaint. The kernel (2.4.6) supports umsdos, ext2,
initrd, floppy, iso9660, ppp, and networking.

Changes: Updated and improved boot config scripts, addition of udhcp, fixes
for iptables configuration, improved chimera tables support, and new
scripts.

[002] - batemail 0.8.0
  by Ryan VanMiddlesworth (http://freshmeat.net/users/ryanvm/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 01:15

Category: Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: batemail is a Perl script that you slip between your MTA (e.g.
Sendmail) and your local mailer (e.g. Procmail) to strip potentially nasty
attachments from email messages. It takes input on STDIN, removes
executable MIME attachments, and gives the result to the local mailer. The
criteria for a taboo attachment are that the filename ends in one of
several "blacklisted" extensions (EXE, VBS, etc.).

Changes: batemail now has the ability to save blocked attachments. I/O has
been improved - the output is now piped directly to the local mailer (no
more tempfile). Some new documentation has been added on setting up
outbound filtering (with Sendmail), and also on installing batemail using
Sendmail m4 macros. The default location for certain files has been
changed.

[003] - bind 9.2.0rc8 (Bind9-Beta)
  by Gael MARTINEZ (http://freshmeat.net/users/gaelik/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 01:11

Category: Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) implements an Internet name
server for Unix operating systems. The BIND consists of a server (or
`daemon') called `named' and a resolver library. A name server is a network
service that enables clients to name resources or objects and share this
information with other objects in the network.

Changes: This is a release candidate for BIND 9.2.0, which contains a
number of new features over BIND 9.1. Several bugs in 9.2.0rc7 have been
fixed.

any JPG image as the background, and can create PDF files in addition to
the PostScript files created by cdlabelgen.

Changes: Subtitle (-s) strings used to be removed from end caps even if
they fit. Now they will be printed.

[027] - Linux Persistent Memory 0.1.8 (Development)
  by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 14:53

Category: Software Development :: Libraries

About: LPSM is a C library with a simple interface that manages a segment
of memory backed by a persistent file. It differs from ordinary mmap() in
two ways: it can optionally offer heap management (malloc/free/realloc)
within the arena, and more importantly, a transaction log is used to ensure
the consistency of the persistent representation. The application notifies
LPSM whenever the arena is in a consistent state, suitable for
checkpointing. If the application or system crashes, the arena will always
be recovered to a consistent checkpoint.

Changes: Offline log recovery has been added. This release will make sure
that "errno" contains useful values. The documentation has been cleaned up
some more. There is a workaround for a gcc 2.91 bug.

[033] - newsstar 0.4.3
  by Tony Houghton (http://freshmeat.net/users/realh/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 18:28

Category: Communications :: Usenet News

About: Newsstar fetches news and posts it to a local news server, usually
INN. What makes newsstar special is that it can make multiple simultaneous
connections, not only to one server, but to several, supporting up to 10
"threads". Before fetching each article, it checks that it hasn't already
been downloaded by another thread or in a previous session. It can also
"pipeline" article requests to make better use of available bandwidth.

Changes: This release corrects the behaviour when using -f and -s options
together, doesn't start a new thread unless there are definitely articles
available for download, limits internal max_threads setting if the total
number possible for all servers is lower, and increases the number of
arguments allowed before a warning.

[034] - Operating-Menu 2.0 beta2
  by aotto (http://freshmeat.net/users/aotto/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 06:23

Categories: Desktop Environment, System :: Monitoring, Terminals,
Utilities

About: Operating-Menu is an easy-to-use and easy-to-configure ncurses-based
menu interface for the UNIX environment. It has three interesting features:
1) It is very small and focuses only on one task. 2) It creates an
impressive ncurses interface without using any external packages for TCL;
the whole interface depends on the standard UNIX command "tput". 3) It
distinguish between "Programmer" and "User" on a UNIX box; a powerful
configuration interface hides the software from the user.

Changes: A bugfix has been made in OpMenu.tcl, and a full rewite has been
made on the "tclterm" C interface. The Tcl-Obj interface is now in use.
Strong speed improvements have been made, and the documantation has been
updated. Avoid transformation of integer geometry data into string based

[040] - Reliable Forwarder Daemon 1.1.3
  by Paul Sheer (http://freshmeat.net/users/psheer/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 14:37

Categories: Internet, Security :: Cryptography, System :: Networking

About: The Reliable Forwarder Daemon (rfd) does TCP forwarding by listening
on a user-defined port and forwarding incoming connections transparently
through a second rfd server on a remote machine. Ultra reliable forwarding
is achieved using a zero overhead reconnect protocol. Reconnections happen
periodically if no data is read from the remote machine due to errors.
Reconnections are transparent to the service being forwarded. This is
useful for POP/IMAP connections, which will survive a modem failure. The
server can handle an arbitrary large number of connections, but no forking
or threading is ever done. rfd handles multiple simultaneous connections
efficiently without blocking.

Changes: A major rework of the underlying library (compression and
encryption were added), thorough testing, and lots of behavioral fixes.

[041] - renameutils 0.2.0
  by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
  Thursday, October 25th 2001 10:37

Categories: System, System :: Archiving

About: The file renaming utilities (renameutils for short) are a set of
programs designed to make renaming of multiple files faster and less
cumbersome. It currently consists of two programs: "qmv" and "imv". qmv
allows files to be renamed by editing their names in any text editor. Since
the files are listed after each other, this allows common changes to be
made more quickly. imv ("interactive mv") is trivial but useful when you
are too lazy to type (or even complete) the name of the file to rename. It
allows the filename to be edited in the terminal using the GNU readline
library. This is also useful when renaming files in Midnight Commander,
where the whole filename has to be entered again.

Changes: Manual pages were added. A Debian package was created.

Conversion, Multimedia :: Video, Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: transcode is a text console video-stream processing tool. It
supports elementary video and audio frame transformations. Some example
modules are included to enable import of MPEG program streams (VOB),
Digital Video (DV), or YUV video (YV12) and export modules for writing
DivX, OpenDivX, or uncompressed AVI files. A set of tools is available to
extract and decode the sources into raw video/audio streams for import and
to enable post-processing of AVI files.

Changes: This last pre-release has improved audio/video synchronization for
program streams. Experimental support for automatic 3:2 pull-down
detection, and inverse tele-cine for NTSC format is available. Hopefully,
the deadlock bug with option "-M 2" is fixed. Video frame processing is now
managed by a thread pool. A new import module for the Nuppelvideo file
format is included, changes in the frame region selection logic have been
made, and a bug in the DVD chapter mode was fixed.

[059] - xpad 0.2.1 (Development)

Categories: Desktop Environment, Utilities

About: xpad is a paperless substitute for leaving notes on index cards, or
"post-it" notes all over your desk. It opens small text boxes on the X
display so that notes can be written and then left to be read later.

Changes: Saving is now more fault-tolerant. xpad now saves the contents of
a pad every so often, instead of only at exit time.
