  Monday, October 22nd 2001 16:20

Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Software Development :: Build Tools,
System :: Installation/Setup, System :: Systems Administration

About: Apache Toolbox provides a means to easily compile Apache (IPv4/6)
SSL, PHP(v3/v4), MySQL, Jakarta, a large number of modules (61 3rd party
modules and 36 default Apache modules, static or as DSOs), and GD libraries
with PNG+JPEG+Freetype2+zlib support. It is fully customizable and
menu-driven. Everything is compiled from source, and wget is used to
download any missing modules. It can also check for RPMs that might cause
problems and create an RPM with your selections.

Changes: This release has been updated for mod_ssl. A new feature allows
you to hack the source of apache's httpd to change the reported httpd name,
version number, and support site. Support for color in the menu items has
been added.

  Monday, October 22nd 2001 14:13

Category: Database :: Front-Ends

About: Database Abstraction Layer is a project to produce a general way to
access databases from within PHP. The DAL class takes care of the

When executing insert queries, you always got an error. The query was
executed fine but the fetching of the last insert went wrong. This is
fixed, along with other things.

About: HTTrack is an easy-to-use offline browser utility. It allows you to
download a Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building
recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the
server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site's relative

viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and
resume interrupted downloads.

Changes: Files skipping (bogus anticipating system), a crash when showing
stats (div by zero), and several problems with javascript parsing were
fixed. The mirror interrupt is now faster and cleaner, the request/response
treatment has been improved, and a new source update wrapper has been

[028] - kChat 1.6
  by Marcin Krzyzanowski (http://freshmeat.net/users/krzyzak/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 14:27

Category: Communications :: Chat

About: kChat is a chat system that has a server-side moderated mode. A
client and server are included. It is currently working with its own
protocol, so it is not possible to connect with other clients (such as
IRC). It is written in Java.

Changes: The server has undergone a protocol clean, and logout/kick has
been fixed with thread stop and real closed connections. There are smaller
client threads, a command parse global function, a configuration file, the
ability to log to a file, a reserved nicks list, a kChatPing thread, and
ping pong to detect inactive connections. The moderator password has been
omved to the configuration file. The client has been adapted to changes in
the protocol, has ping pong support, and has a new command parser.

[029] - keychain 1.7
  by Daniel Robbins (http://freshmeat.net/users/gentoo/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 13:35

Categories: Security, Utilities

About: keychain helps you to manage RSA and DSA keys in a convenient and
secure manner. It acts as a frontend to SSH-agent, but allows you to
easily have one long running SSH-agent process per system, rather than
the norm of one SSH-agent per login session. This dramatically reduces the
number of times you need to enter your passphrase - with keychain, you
only need to enter a passphrase once every time your local machine is
rebooted. keychain also makes it easy for remote cron jobs to securely
"hook in" to a long running SSH-agent process, allowing your scripts to
take advantage of RSA and DSA keys.

Changes: Automatically taking advantage of procmail's lockfile command (if
present) to serialize the startup of multiple keychain processes
(preventing the "too many ssh-agents" bug; this fix is very handy if you've
configured your system to open multiple login xterms when you start your X
session), a ssh-agent kill fix, a Solaris output fix, Darwin/MacOS X path
fix, FreeBSD output fix, new short-style options (-k/-h for --stop and
--help respectively), and a new -q/--quiet option for less-verbose output.

About: Kinkatta is an AOL instant messenger for KDE. Kinkatta contains all
common instant messenger features such as logging, aliases, chat rooms,
proxys, auto-away, pounce, last on, idle, per-buddy audio configuration,
and complete chat window configuration.

Changes: You can now turn off the sound when away. Socks has been disabled,
turning over that functionality to KDE. An error where /me was forever
looping, and non-alias import have been fixed. Alias's will now show up in
the titlebar.

[032] - LineControl Server 2.1.5
  by S. Fuchs (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfuchs/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 11:49

Categories: Internet, System :: Networking

About: LineControl allows you to remotely control the Internet connection
of a Linux masquerading server using multiple clients. It takes care with
the number of clients using the connection and decides upon this number
whether the connection should be up or down. The clients show the time the
connection is up and throughput statistics. Different connection types are
supported, such as analog modems, ISDN, or even cable modems and ADSL
devices.

Changes: This release contains several bugfixes which attempt to eliminate
a segmentation fault. The segfault tracking code now works, as it didn't
work in 2.1.4.

Category: System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Linux is a clone of the Unix kernel, written from scratch by Linus
Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the
Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance. It has
all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix kernel,
including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand
loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory management, and
TCP/IP networking.

Changes: SA1100, and the keyboard/pm include have been cleaned up. Assabet,
the ARM simpad architecture, the ICS IDE driver, the SA1100 stork pcmcia
drivers, the ADFS file system, the ARM Cerf platform, the ARM includes, and
the ARM default configurations have all been updated. ISA dma support in
the core is now optional. The SA1100 cache performance problem, the compile
failure on ARM ecoscsi, and isofs packing on the ARM have been fixed. Most
other drivers have been switched to generic BLK*64.

  by David F. Skoll (http://freshmeat.net/users/dskoll/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 13:08

Categories: Communications :: Email :: Filters, Security

About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME e-mail scanner designed to protect
Windows clients from viruses. It can alter or delete various parts of a
MIME message according to a very flexible configuration file. It can also
bounce messages with unacceptable attachments. MIMEDefang works with
Sendmail 8.11's new "Milter" API, which gives it much more flexibility than
procmail-based approaches.

Changes: A completely reworked architecture similar to Apache's pre-forked
server approach which significantly reduces CPU consumption, documentation
of the communication protocol between mimedefang and the filters (you can
plug in your own filter written in the language of your choice if you
choose not to use the built-in Perl filter), and Sendmail 8.12

[043] - Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.2.19-ow4
  by Solar Designer (http://freshmeat.net/users/solardiz/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 14:11

Categories: Security, System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux, System
:: Systems Administration

About: The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security
"hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new features,
some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The "hardening"
features of the patch, while not a complete method of protection, provide
an extra layer of security against the easier ways to exploit certain
classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of those
vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to the
system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not see
what others are doing.

Changes: This release fixes two Linux kernel vulnerabilities. It fixes a
(non-security) symbol export issue introduced with 2.2.19-ow3 and moves the
support for ELF executables which use an a.out format dynamic linker into a
separate configuration option.

About: Operating-Menu is an easy-to-use and easy-to-configure ncurses-based
menu interface for the UNIX environment. It has three interesting features:
1) It is very small and focuses only on one task. 2) It creates an
impressive ncurses interface without using any external packages for TCL;
the whole interface depends on the standard UNIX command "tput". 3) It

About: Pancho is a utility that allows Cisco Router Administrators to make
changes to a single node, or group of nodes, without requiring the admin
to log into the individual router. It also provides configuration
archiving functionality by allowing you to copy the routers'
configurations to a remote server manually or though an automated
process.

Changes: A bug that prevented the correct version number of the utility to

[050] - rcf 5.2.1c2 (development)
  by jsmoriss (http://freshmeat.net/users/jsmoriss/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 12:43

Categories: Internet, Security, System :: Networking :: Firewalls, System
:: Systems Administration

About: rcf (aka rc.firewall) is an ipchains-based firewall with support for
over 50 network service modules (including vtun, DHCP, NFS, SMB, Napster,
proxies, online games, etc.), masquerading, port forwarding, and IP
accounting. All services are self-contained modules which can be
prioritized in the ipchains stack. Protections include spoofing, stuffed
routing/masqerading, DoS, smurf attacks, outgoing port scans, and many
more. rcf also supports unlimited public, private (masqu'ed), DMZ, and MZ
(non-masq'ed) interfaces and their subnets. Access rules are defined per
interface and DMZ/MZ server "clusters". rcf is compatible with Red Hat,
Slackware, Debian, Linux Router Project (LRP), and many other
distributions.

Changes: The module port options were reworked. Support for marking packets
was added. Server, client, and port forwarding modules were added to
support the Apple Filing Protocol. Cluster operation on a number of modules
was fixed. Online-games modules were added to private interfaces, and
modules for MSN Gaming Zone and Starsiege Tribes were added. The FAQ was
updated with new questions about configuration, fail-over configuration
with multiple external interfaces, restarting of only one interface, and
new questions on development and CVS usage. Support was added for building
a Debian package for RCF by typing "make deb".

About: rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another. The target
directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs
are stored in a special directory so you can still recover files lost some
time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an
incremental backup. rdiff-backup can also operate in a bandwidth-
efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup
and ssh to securely back up to a remote location, and only the differences
will be transmitted. It can also handle symlinks, device files,

[060] - SQLite 2.0.7
  by D. Richard Hipp (http://freshmeat.net/users/drh/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 12:48

Category: Database :: Database Engines/Servers

About: SQLite is a C library that implements an SQL database engine. A
large subset of SQL92 is supported. A complete database is stored in a
single disk file. The API is designed for convenience and ease of use.
Applications that link against SQLite can enjoy the power and flexiblity of
an SQL database without the administrative hassles of supporting a separate
database server. Because it omits the client-server interaction overhead
and writes directly to disk, SQLite is also faster than the big database
servers for most operations. In addition to the C library, the SQLite
distribution includes a command-line tool for interacting nwith SQLite
databases and SQLite bindings for Tcl/Tk.

Changes: Several small new features to support the (separately developed
and distributed) ODBC driver.

[067] - WLA DX 8.3
  by Ville Helin (http://freshmeat.net/users/vhelin/)
  Monday, October 22nd 2001 11:18

Categories: Software Development :: Assemblers, Software Development ::
Compilers

About: WLA DX is yet another macro assembler that can program the GB-Z80,
Z80, 6502, 6510, 65816, and SPC-700 CPUs. Included in the package there is
a GB-Z80 disassembler and few converters. WLA DX was initially programmed
to compile ROM images for Gameboy, but nowadays it can also patch existing
ROM images with code, and even compile program files and ROM files for
other CPUs like the NES-6502, C64-6510, and SNES's SPC-700.

Changes: The .INPUT directive was added. It is now possible to set the
bank/slot size to full 65536 bytes. The u switch was removed. The problem
where redefining a value definition to be a string definition would crash
WLA has been fixed. Support for SPC-700 systems was added. The class 4
mnemonic ("ADC #x", "LDA #x", etc) decoder for the 658 family now handles
labels correctly in 8bit operand mode. "SUB (IX+n)" was mistyped as "SUB A,
(IX+n)" in the Z80 processor code. The .SDSCTAG directive for the Z80
family was updated to support version 1.01 of the SDSC ROM Tag
Specification.
