  Monday, October 8th 2001 04:20

Categories: Database, Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Utilities

About: CueAct is a utility that uses the CueCat driver to look up
information about barcodes swiped by a CueCat read, but also perform any
other action of interest associated with the barcodes. CueAct is fully
configurable, and comes with a sample configuration file to track Fedex,
UPS, USPS, and DHL packages, look up books by ISBN numbers, look up UPC
barcodes found on commercial items, and EAN-13 and EAN-13+5 barcodes found
on European commercial items. CueAct also comes with the DCdb utility that
allows it to look up DigitalConvergence's own "cue" barcodes (found in the
US RadioShack catalog, for example).

Changes: A utility called "xautotype" has been added that sends a string of
characters to the X client currently in focus "as if it was typed". Used
with CueAct, it is possible to "autotype" a barcode in an X editor, or in a
field in a Web form, for example, just by swiping the CueCat over the
barcode.

online chat and instant messaging easier. It was originally written as a
replacement for libfaim. It supports AIM (via the TOC protocol) and IRC.
The package also includes a simple instant messaging/chat room client that
has many of the same command names as functions in the library; this allows
developers to examine the behavior of the library closely while writing
their own code.

Changes: Bugfixes, IRC KICK handling, and standardization on HTML for
markup.

  Monday, October 8th 2001 06:02

Categories: Security, System :: Networking :: Firewalls, System ::
Networking :: Monitoring

About: fwmon is a firewall monitor for Linux. It integrates with
ipchains/iptables to give you realtime notification of firewall events. It
has fairly customizable output, allowing you to display a packet summary
with hex and ASCII data dumps to stdout, a logfile, tcpdump-style capture
files, and even syslog. It also boasts some simple security features such
as the ability to chroot itself, and operate in a non-root environment.

Changes: The output has been buffered, so the monitor is now much faster
under a heavy load. SQL output has been added, and the RPM now installs
fwmon as a daemon.

[061] - mp3mover.pl 2.1
  by James Maddison (http://freshmeat.net/users/tuxjay/)
  Monday, October 8th 2001 10:41

Category: Utilities

About: mp3mover.pl is a Perl script which attempts to rename MP3 files so
that they conform to a consistent user-defined naming scheme. It inspects
every MP3 in a directory and attempts to work out which part of the MP3 is
the artist's name, album name, etc. It then renames each MP3 to follow the
user's naming scheme, optionally creating a directory structure and writing
an id3v1 or id3v2 tag to the MP3 based on the information it obtains.
mp3mover.pl was designed to be very flexible and can be highly customized
through the use of a large number of command line options and a per user
configuration file.

Changes: The program no longer eats memory when using the GUI and working
with lots of MP3s. Lots of improvements were made to the heuristics, and
small bug fixes were made.

[079] - Scope 0.7.2
  by Steve Meyfroidt (http://freshmeat.net/users/smeyfroi/)
  Monday, October 8th 2001 06:05

Category: Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Scope is a framework built around an extensible implementation of
the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern. It provides an easy-to-use Java
library that can be used as a basis for component-oriented application
development following the layered architecture detailed in Sun's J2EE and
in Cheesman/Daniels: UML Components. Scope ships with two View
implementations: one for Swing GUIs and one for servlet deployments. It has
been used commercially as a foundation for development of a VoiceXML UI.

Changes: This release continues the refactor and tidy of servlet
implementation. The servlet implementation is considerably changed in this
release, although the public API is relatively untouched. However, the
mechanics of servlet request handling are much more straightforward now,
and should allow alternative implementations to be fitted on top more
easily. However, all handling of session state has been removed, although
the session is now available in the ServletContext during a request.

[080] - Serveez 0.1.1
  by Stefan Jahn (http://freshmeat.net/users/ela/)
  Monday, October 8th 2001 16:39

Category: System :: Networking

About: Serveez is a server framework which provides routines and help for
implementing IP-based servers (TCP, UDP, and ICMP). It is also possible to
use named pipes for all connection-oriented protocols. The package includes
a number of servers that work already: an HTTP server, an IRC server, a
Gnutella spider, and some others. One of the highlights is that you can run
all protocols on the same port. The application itself is single-threaded,
but it uses helper processes for concurrent name resolution and ident
lookups.

Changes: A zlib codec has been implemented. There is a specification for a
transparent codec interface. There is a working named pipe interface under
Windows. The chat server master protocol has been modified to use textSure
v1.3. A virtually unlimited number of socket structures are allowed. This
release includes a faster HTTP file cache, automatic coserver restart on
buffer overrun or death, loadable server modules, and Guile server examples
and documentation. Guile servers can be enabled via --enable-guile-server.

  Monday, October 8th 2001 00:02

Categories: Internet, Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Security, System :: Networking

About: SSL Proxy server listens on a TCP port, accepts SSL connections, and
forwards them to another local or remote TCP port. For example, it is
possible to create an HTTPS server if you have an HTTP server and you run
an SSL Proxy server on port 443 which forwards the connections to port 80.
SSL Proxy's design makes it as secure as possible and still perform well.

Changes: A write buffering bug was fixed. This bug caused some data damage
when large files transferred with HTTPS. Two config options were added for
the two way buffer sizes.

[087] - Thumbpad 0.0
by Bill Kendrick, New Breed Software

Categories: Text Editors, Utilities

About: Thumbpad is a simple note taking program, which displays a very
large keyboard that you can easily type on using only one finger. So, if
you're holding your PDA with one hand, you can use your thumb. The
default keyboard provides the 16 most commonly used keys (in English), and
two other layouts provide the remaining letters, numbers, and some
punctuation. Thumbpad is an FLTK application, originally intended for the
Agenda VR3 PDA. It is based on utilware's "dotNote" for PalmOS.

Changes: This application is as yet untested on an actual PDA.

[088] - Tksql 0.5.24
  by Sandro Dentella (http://freshmeat.net/users/sdtcl/)
  Monday, October 8th 2001 15:09

Categories: Database :: Front-Ends, Software Development :: Build Tools

About: Tksql allows you to edit the tables of PostgreSQL databases. You can
use it from the shell prompt, specifying the name of a table, or an SQL
satement, or just the name of a database. It has filter capabilities which
are very easy to use. Two views are possible (tables and form) and both
views can coexist. Tksql can edit a join of two tables (limited to the
first of such tables). Totals and subtotals can be done quickly, and
displayed inline with the data or in a separate window. It uses the sdsql
package for Tcl/Tk.

Changes: A fix for an annoying bug in the error procedure, a defalut conf
file, and a new display mode of field in the mask view.

About: Twisted is an event-based framework for internet applications. It
includes a Web server, a telnet server, an IRC server, a multiplayer RPG
engine, a generic client/server pair for remote object access, and APIs for
creating new protocols.

Changes: Twisted servers can now run using Jython, albeit in an inefficient
manner. twisted.names, a DNS system, was checked in. It is still being
worked on. SSL, line-based protocols (e.g. HTTP), and netstring based
protocols are now more robust. Servers, especially Web servers, should run
faster under high loads. The authentication in PB was refactored into
simply being an object one can connect to. A new connection API for PB was
implemented. Much more example code for PB was added.
